The arcade controls are simple; survival depends on moving constantly, learning which formations reward a full clear, and deciding when a bomb is worth more as a lifesaving attack than as a stage-clear bonus.
Controls and the basic objective
The 1987 arcade game uses an eight-way joystick, a Shot button, and a Bomb button, according to TATSUJIN’s official Flying Shark page. Move in any of eight directions, use Shot for your regular attack, and use Bomb when you need a stronger attack or emergency relief. The game has five stages; reach the end of each to advance.
Enemy bullets and contact with airborne enemies cost a life. Contact with land- or sea-based enemies does not. Losing a life resets your power-ups, and you restart with three bombs, so a death can leave you less capable even when you return to play.
NES version: controls and starting resources
The NES home version was released as Sky Shark. Its manual says each player starts with four aircraft and three bombs per aircraft, and that reaching the next airfield completes a stage. The manual also identifies Start as the pause control. Treat these as NES-version details; the available arcade documentation does not establish identical starting lives or pause controls for every release. See the Sky Shark NES manual.

Power-ups and formation rewards
Several rewards depend on destroying particular enemy groups or targets. Try to finish a formation rather than picking off only part of it, but do not fly into danger just to collect a reward.
| Target or formation | Reward | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Full red formation | S item: one shot-power level, up to six levels | Collect the item after revealing it. |
| Certain ground-based enemies | B item: one additional bomb | Not every ground target is documented as dropping one. |
| Full white formation | Possible 1UP | The extra aircraft appears only when certain conditions are met. |
| Complete yellow formation | 1,000 points | The score reward is for the complete formation. |
These rewards and conditions are listed on TATSUJIN’s official game page. Because shot power resets when you lose a life, protecting a developed weapon level can matter as much as chasing another upgrade.

How scoring and bombs work
At stage clear, each bomb remaining in your inventory is worth 3,000 points; after the bonus, your inventory resets to three bombs. That creates a choice: save bombs for the clear bonus, or spend one to survive a dangerous attack or remove a troublesome group. A bomb that prevents a lost life may also help preserve your shot power.
The Sky Shark NES manual separately says an extra aircraft is awarded every 50,000 points. Keep that threshold tied to the NES manual; the arcade page cited here does not establish that the same rule applies to every version.

Practical tactics for surviving longer
Keep moving and leave yourself room
The NES manual advises players to keep moving and avoid getting cornered. Avoiding a fixed position makes it harder for incoming fire to trap you, while leaving open space gives you somewhere to dodge when enemies attack.
Use the side-to-side scroll
The arcade playfield scrolls slowly left and right along with the plane as well as vertically. TATSUJIN describes the playable space as 4/3 the visible area: moving laterally can push enemies off-screen and prevent their attacks. Use side movement deliberately to manage enemy placement rather than treating the visible screen as the entire field.
Rank #4
- The excitement of an arcade right at home.
- Giant 3 foot long track.
- 2 ways to play: roll the ball by hand or fire the balls with the launcher.
- Each player gets 60 seconds… high score wins.
Spend bombs to manage danger, not just for points
The NES manual notes that a bomb can sometimes eliminate waves of bullets and advises saving bombs for ground targets or heavy enemy attacks when the situation allows. The stage-clear bonus makes conservation useful, but it is not a reason to hold a bomb through a threat that is likely to cost a life.
Prioritize safely completing formations
Red, white, and yellow formations have different potential rewards. When a formation appears, assess whether you can finish it without crossing a dangerous firing lane. The white formation’s 1UP is conditional, so do not assume every complete white group will produce an extra aircraft.

Which version should you play?
The arcade game and NES Sky Shark are distinct versions, and their documented rules are not interchangeable. For a modern Switch option, Nintendo lists Toaplan Arcade Garage: Flying Fire Shark, a collection containing both Flying Shark and its sequel Fire Shark. Nintendo lists Arcade Mode and Super Easy Mode for both games, alongside M2 gadgets, Arcade Challenge sections, and rewind. The listed release date is August 29, 2026. Consult Nintendo’s Switch listing for the collection’s current platform details.
For learning the arcade game, Super Easy Mode and the listed aids can make threats and upcoming items easier to follow; Arcade Mode is the option described as recreating the original’s demanding play. These are features Nintendo lists for the collection, not a guarantee that other ports offer the same modes or tools.
