The simplest supported way to play the first Gears of War on PC is Gears of War: Reloaded, the remaster available for Xbox PC and Steam. The original game’s Xbox listing is for console and cloud platforms, not PC. An older Windows PC edition, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, is also listed separately, but its published requirements are historical and do not guarantee it will install or run on a modern PC.
Which Gears of War 1 edition should you play on PC?
For a straightforward current PC route, choose Gears of War: Reloaded. Xbox describes it as a remaster of the original Gears of War and lists Xbox PC and Steam as launch platforms. See the Reloaded product listing for the edition and platform details.
Look for the exact name Gears of War: Reloaded and confirm the store page identifies PC as a platform before buying. The separate Gears of War listing covers the original console release and names Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming—not a native PC build.
How to get Gears of War: Reloaded on PC
- Choose a supported PC storefront. Xbox announced availability through Xbox PC and Steam. Check the live product page in your region for current availability and purchase options.
- Check subscription access if you use Game Pass. Xbox’s July 2026 announcement lists Reloaded for PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate and says it joined Game Pass Premium. Catalog availability and terms can vary by region and change, so verify the current listing before subscribing. See Xbox’s July 2026 Game Pass announcement.
- Install from the storefront you selected. Follow that store’s current install flow and check its game page for any edition-specific PC requirements. The Xbox PC app itself requires Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher, according to Xbox’s PC app page; that general app requirement does not guarantee that a particular Gears edition will run.
What Reloaded supports on PC
Xbox lists ultrawide display support, benchmark mode, variable refresh rate, mouse and keyboard input, controller remapping, AMD FSR 3.1, and NVIDIA DLSS 3.5 Super Resolution for the PC edition. These are listed capabilities, not independent performance results. Consult the official product page for the current feature details.

Can you play the original 2007 PC release?
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is a separate older Windows PC option listed by Xbox. Its product page identifies a Windows 10 edition and publishes the following minimum requirements:
Rank #2
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
- 64-bit Windows 10 version 1511
- Intel Core i5 at 2.7 GHz or AMD FX six-core CPU
- 8 GB RAM
- GeForce GTX 650 Ti or Radeon R7 260X graphics
- DirectX 12 and a DirectX 12-capable graphics card
- 60 GB available storage
These are the store listing’s historical requirements for Ultimate Edition, not requirements for Reloaded and not proof that the older edition will install or launch on a current Windows PC. The available official information does not establish compatibility for a particular copy of the 2007 Games for Windows disc release or provide verified repair steps. Check the live listing before relying on this edition; do not treat unofficial installers or modified executables as a supported route. The requirements appear on the Ultimate Edition listing.

No. Xbox’s July 2026 announcement for its early-release PC backward-compatibility program named four original Xbox launch games, and Gears of War was not among them. That program announcement does not establish another PC route for this game; see Xbox’s announcement.
