Keep enough Inspiration for useful plays as it regenerates. Because published guides disagree about style matchups and timers, trust the active encounter’s interface rather than a universal chart.
Choose the right Gift of Gab mode
Gift of Gab can offer two different activities. Rhetoric Duel is the card-based contest described in this guide. Free Persuasion is a direct conversational argument with an AI chatbot; guides report that it may appear intermittently, so it is not necessarily available every time.

How to play a Rhetoric Duel
1. Select the recommended debate style
Before the duel, the game presents a style choice. The four styles reported in guides are Bluster, Provocation, Rebuttal, and Filibuster. Published guides disagree on the full counter-style cycle, so do not rely on a fixed matchup chart: choose the style the game marks as recommended for that encounter.

2. Spend Inspiration on cards
Inspiration is the resource used to play cards, and guides report that it regenerates during the duel. Card costs and effects vary. Read the effect shown in the interface and choose plays that help reduce the opponent’s Mental Focus; you do not need to match every line of dialogue literally.
Balance more expensive attacks with lower-cost actions. Spending all your Inspiration on one costly play can leave you without a useful action while the resource recovers.

3. Respond to counter prompts
Guides describe counter prompts, sometimes called “Trash Talk,” that let you take an action during a debate. Use them when they appear and follow the control displayed for your platform. PC Gamer describes Q/E prompts on its reported controls, but those keys should not be assumed for other platforms.
4. Watch the Mental Focus bar and any timer
The objective is to reduce the opponent’s Mental Focus to zero while keeping your own from being depleted. Check the visible bars throughout the duel. Published accounts conflict on whether a timer applies: follow the timer, if any, shown in your current encounter rather than assuming every debate is timed or untimed.

Why is Gift of Gab difficult?
If the duel feels unusually demanding, check whether you have progressed the Scholar profession and whether an upgrade is available. PC Gamer and Game8 report that Scholar progression can strengthen Gift of Gab play. Their route descriptions refer to level 13 and a Gift of Gab quest, with names reported as “Silver Tongue” or “Spring,” followed by “Legacy: Scholar’s Path.” Because quest and NPC naming details vary between guides, use the active journal and quest interface to identify the current requirement rather than relying on an NPC name from a walkthrough.

- Style matchups: Use the game’s recommended-style indicator; published guides give conflicting counter cycles.
- Timing: Use the timer displayed in your encounter, if one appears; published guides disagree about timer behavior.
- Controls: Follow the on-screen prompt for your platform. Q/E is reported for PC, not established as a universal control scheme.
- Quest names: Follow your journal’s current wording; guides report differing names for the Gift of Gab progression quest.
For further published walkthroughs, see PC Gamer’s Gift of the Gab guide, the Steam Community guide, and Game8’s Scholar guide. The guides are not fully consistent, so the encounter UI is the most reliable immediate reference.
