Step-by-step: play the Olympic Doodle game
- Open Google’s public Doodles archive.
- Search the archive for Champion Island.
- Open the Champion Island Games entry.
- Select Play, Replay, or the equivalent launch control available in the archived page.
- Follow the opening instructions and choose a team when prompted.
- Move Lucky around the island, talk to characters, and look for event entrances and other points of interest.

What is Google Champion Island?
Champion Island is an interactive Google Doodle released in July 2021 to promote the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Olympics were postponed and held in 2021, so “Tokyo 2020” refers to the official name of the Games rather than the year in which the competitions took place.
Google described Champion Island as its largest-ever interactive Doodle at launch. It was created in collaboration with Japanese animation studio STUDIO 4°C and combines retro 16-bit-style presentation, Olympic sports, exploration, characters, and Japanese-inspired setting and folklore themes.
The main goal is to compete against reigning champions in sporting events, but winning events is only part of the experience. The island contains optional tasks, conversations, surprises, and story developments. Google’s later description confirms the overall scope: six sport mini-games, 24 side quests, multiple endings, and more than three hours of gameplay.

Controls: keyboard and touch devices
Google’s official launch material describes the game and its events but does not provide a complete, universal control chart for every current browser build. The safest approach is to use the controls shown by the game itself.
On a desktop or laptop
- Use the directional keys to move Lucky around the island.
- Use the interaction or action control—commonly the spacebar or an on-screen prompt—to speak with characters, advance conversations, enter locations, and begin activities.
- Expect individual sports to add timing-based actions or use different inputs.
Do not assume that one key performs the same function in every event. If Lucky moves correctly but an activity will not start, look for the on-screen interaction prompt and complete the mini-game tutorial rather than relying on a fixed key map.
On a phone or tablet
Some web versions provide touch-oriented movement and interaction through swipes, taps, or on-screen controls. The exact interface depends on the device, browser, and archived game build. Follow the touch instructions displayed in the game. If the play area or controls feel cramped, try landscape orientation or a larger screen, but mobile behavior should not be treated as identical on every device.

How progression works
Champion Island alternates between sport competitions and free exploration. The opening challenge teaches the basic movement and interaction pattern. After that, visible arenas and conversations point you toward more events, while characters and environmental details lead to optional tasks.

A good first playthrough is:
- Learn the basics. Complete the opening activity and pay attention to the tutorial prompts.
- Choose a direction. Explore nearby paths instead of trying to locate every sport immediately.
- Talk to people. Characters often provide the context for activities and side quests.
- Complete competitions. Enter the sports events you find and learn each event’s individual controls.
- Return to earlier areas. New conversations or tasks may become available after major competitions or story events.
The game expects you to move between competition and exploration. Side quests are not just padding around the sports: they are part of the island’s story and help explain its characters and different outcomes.

If you want to see as much of Champion Island as possible, avoid rushing directly from one arena to the next.

If a guide gives rigid instructions that do not match your version, prioritize the current game’s dialogue and prompts.
How long does Champion Island take?
A short session can cover the introduction and one or more competitions. Google says the complete experience contains more than three hours of gameplay when its side quests and multiple endings are included. That is not a guaranteed completion time or an average for every player: someone focusing only on the main events will finish sooner, while an exploratory or repeat playthrough can take longer.
