Short answer: On PC, you can launch GTA 5 Story Mode offline with Rockstar Games Launcher’s -scofflineonly launch argument—but Rockstar’s supported setup requires an online launch and current game and Launcher files. It does not provide a supported way to skip an update the Launcher requires. Offline play is also subject to periodic online entitlement verification.
Can you play GTA 5 offline without updating?
It depends on what you mean by “without updating.” If GTA 5 and its Launcher are already set up and the game is not demanding an update, Rockstar documents an offline launch option for PC Story Mode. If a required update is blocking launch, Rockstar’s guidance does not describe a supported bypass: it instructs players to update the Launcher and game, then launch the game online before using Offline Mode.

Rockstar says Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection, but PC players may still need to connect periodically to verify entitlement. The support article does not give a fixed interval for that check. Rockstar’s entitlement guidance says you can play offline again after connecting and verifying.
Set up Rockstar Launcher for offline Story Mode on PC
Rockstar’s offline-launch instructions, updated February 28, 2025, apply to Story Mode. Complete the initial online setup first; the steps are not a way to bypass a pending required update.

- Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher while online.
- Open Settings.
- Select Grand Theft Auto V in the left sidebar.
- Under Launch Arguments, enter
-scofflineonly. - Open Games, select Play, and start Story Mode. You can also start the game from your preferred launcher.
To use GTA Online, sync Rockstar Cloud progress or saves, or ensure files are up to date, close the game, remove -scofflineonly, then relaunch online. See Rockstar’s full PC offline-mode instructions.
If the Launcher says GTA 5 needs an update
Rockstar’s troubleshooting guidance for players unable to set GTA 5 to Offline Mode after installing or updating the Launcher says to update the Launcher, sign in, update GTA 5, and launch the game through the Launcher while online. In other words, the official procedure relies on completing the required setup; it does not offer a supported method to suppress a required update. What offline mode does—and does not—cover
- Story Mode: The documented PC launch argument is specifically for offline Story Mode.
- GTA Online: Offline mode is not a way to play GTA Online; remove the argument and relaunch online to access it.
- Updates and cloud features: Offline play does not sync Rockstar Cloud progress or saves, and Steam says games do not update while Steam is offline.
- Future access: A PC entitlement check may require another internet connection later. Rockstar does not state a fixed schedule.
