Available options vary by controller and platform. For keyboard-key mapping, Microsoft specifically documents the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller—not every standard controller.
Remap buttons with Xbox Accessories
- Connect your controller to the Xbox console or Windows PC where you want to configure it.
- Open the Xbox Accessories app and select the connected controller.
- Open the configuration or mapping controls shown for that controller model. Change the button assignments using the labels and options displayed in the app.
- Save the configuration or select the profile as prompted by the app.
Menu names and available controls can differ by controller, platform, and firmware, so follow the current interface rather than assuming every model has the same options. Microsoft announced remapping through Xbox Accessories for standard Xbox One controllers in 2015; that announcement is not a complete compatibility list for newer or third-party controllers. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement gives swapping LB and X as an example: mapping LB to X automatically maps X to LB.
Controller remapping versus changing a game’s controls
Controller-level remapping changes what the controller’s buttons do through its app configuration, rather than requiring you to change controls separately inside each game. Game-specific settings remain useful when you want a layout only for one title, while an app configuration is the route Microsoft described for remapping at the controller level. The available behavior depends on the connected controller and the game.
Map controller buttons to keyboard keys
Keyboard-key mapping is a separate feature from ordinary controller-button reassignment. Microsoft documented it for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. Do not assume a standard Xbox Wireless Controller offers this option; check the controls the Xbox Accessories app presents for your exact model. Microsoft’s 2023 keyboard-mapping announcement describes the feature. On an Xbox console, the game must accept keyboard input for mapped keys to work in that game.

Choose a setup for accessibility or external inputs
The Xbox Adaptive Controller is an optional accessibility device, not a requirement for remapping a standard controller. Microsoft describes its use with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows PC, with remapping and profiles through Xbox Accessories. Its specification also describes use with external input devices. Before choosing a switch or other add-on, check that its connection and compatibility match your intended setup. See Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller information and the Xbox Adaptive Controller guidance.
Adaptive Controller firmware and button mapping
The firmware detail below applies to the Adaptive Controller, not Xbox controllers generally. Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive Controller Input Device Specification v1.6 says firmware earlier than 5.21 maps only the first eight buttons according to its matrix; firmware 5.21 or later supports mapping up to 12 buttons. If an Adaptive Controller configuration does not expose the buttons you expect, check its firmware and the specification’s mapping details.

Which controller should you use?
| Need | Relevant option | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Reassign controller buttons | Xbox Accessories with a compatible controller | Options vary by model and platform; Microsoft’s standard-controller announcement specifically covered Xbox One controllers. |
| Send keyboard keys from a controller | Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 or Xbox Adaptive Controller | Microsoft documents keyboard mapping for these models; on console, the game must support keyboard input. |
| Use external adaptive inputs and profiles | Xbox Adaptive Controller | Confirm the specific input device’s connection and compatibility before choosing accessories. |
If you already own a controller, first connect it and check what Xbox Accessories offers for that exact model. Consider a different controller only if the features or external-input connections you need are unavailable on your current one.
