You can translate Japanese Android games with Google Translate when text is selectable, Google Lens when text is baked into a screenshot, or an OCR screen-translation overlay for repeated in-game text. First check that the specific game is available to your Google Play account: translation tools do not change storefront eligibility.
1. Check whether the game is available to install
Search for the exact title in Google Play while signed in to the account you plan to use. Google treats Play country as an account and store setting, and game availability can vary by country. Check the current listing and the country associated with your account in Google Play’s country and profile guidance.

Availability depends on the specific game and account; there is no universal translation setting that makes a missing listing appear. A VPN, changing Play country, or installing an APK does not automatically resolve account, payment, compatibility, or access issues.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Translate text the game lets you copy
For dialogue or menus that Android exposes as selectable text, try Google Translate’s Tap to Translate feature. Google’s instructions are in Translate text in other apps.
#1 Best Overall
- Open Google Translate and enable Tap to Translate in its settings.
- Return to the game, select the Japanese text, and copy it.
- Tap the Translate bubble to view the translation.
Google’s support page states: “Tap to Translate works with text, not with images.” Many games render dialogue as part of the screen rather than as selectable Android text, so this method will not work on every game or screen.
3. Translate a screenshot with Google Lens
When Japanese text is part of the game’s artwork or interface, capture a screenshot and open it in Google Lens. Lens can recognize text in an image, let you select a word, line, or region, and translate the selection. Follow Google Lens’s instructions for translating text in images.
- Pause the game if possible and take a screenshot.
- Open the screenshot in Google Photos or Lens.
- Select the text or area you need, then choose Translate; set Japanese as the source and English as the target if Lens does not detect them automatically.
A clear, legible screenshot gives text recognition a better chance. This approach is useful for a menu or a single line of dialogue, but you need to leave or pause the game to inspect it.
4. Use an OCR overlay for repeated translation
Screen-translation apps can read text on the display with optical character recognition (OCR) and show translations over the game. Their available modes and data handling differ, so check the current app listing and permission prompts before granting access.

Screen Translate
The Screen Translate Google Play listing describes full-screen, selected-region, automatic, and subtitle modes, as well as Japanese OCR. It says the app uses Android Accessibility Service to read on-screen text for translation and that text is sent to the selected engine, or stays on-device when on-device OCR is used. These are disclosures from the developer’s listing, not an independent audit of data handling. The listing shows an update date of 4 October 2026.
Gaminik
The Gaminik Google Play listing includes Japanese among its supported source languages. It says its default Universal Translation Mode does not use Accessibility Service, while Chat Translation Mode does. Review the mode you plan to use and the permissions it requests rather than assuming all screen translators work alike.

PlayTranslate
The PlayTranslate project page describes live translation with overlay or notification output. It also notes that custom fonts or graphics may prevent support in some games and that internet access can affect translation quality. Because the page has mixed setup directions, follow the current release documentation and review permissions before installing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →5. Choose a method for the text you need
| Method | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Google Translate Tap to Translate | Text the game exposes for selection and copying | It handles copied text, not text embedded in an image. |
| Google Lens | A specific line, menu, or other text in a screenshot | Text must be visible in the image; you select it and inspect the translation separately. |
| OCR overlay app | Repeated dialogue or menus where an overlay is practical | Confirm Japanese support, available modes, permissions, and whether processing is on-device or uses a selected engine. |
No source here establishes that one of these options is more accurate than the others. Stylized fonts, visual effects, animation, dense menus, or fast-changing text can make OCR harder, and machine translation is an aid to understanding—not a guarantee of polished localization. Test the method on the game and device you intend to use.
