The most direct way to play KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue on Nintendo Switch 2 is its dedicated digital Switch 2 edition, listed for release on October 8, 2026. If you already own the original Switch Cloud Version, Nintendo lists it as compatible with Switch 2, but it requires an internet connection and Square Enix has scheduled the cloud service to end on June 9, 2027, at 14:59 UTC.
Choose how you want to play
| Option | What you get | Internet and availability |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated Switch 2 digital edition | Standalone digital release of HD 2.8; Nintendo lists an estimated download size of 26.9 GB. | Listed for release October 8, 2026. Nintendo’s product listing does not state that an internet connection is required to play this edition; downloading it requires access to the Nintendo eShop. |
| Original Switch Cloud Version | The Switch version streamed from the cloud. | Compatible with Switch 2, but requires internet. Sales ended June 9, 2026, and service is scheduled to end June 9, 2027, at 14:59 UTC. |
| Physical KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] for Switch 2 | A bundle containing HD 2.8, HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, and KINGDOM HEARTS III + Re Mind. | Square Enix lists physical and digital formats. The collection is not the standalone 2.8 edition and does not qualify for the stated Cloud Version owner discount. |
For a new purchase focused on 2.8, look for the dedicated Switch 2 digital edition. If you want a physical purchase or the broader series bundle, consider the collection and confirm the specific retailer’s edition details: Square Enix’s listing does not establish whether the physical release is a game-key card or how much game data is stored on the card. Nintendo’s Switch 2 product listing and Square Enix’s collection page describe the available formats and contents.

Play the dedicated Switch 2 edition

Can you play the original Cloud Version on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo lists the original Switch Cloud Version as compatible with Switch 2 and says its behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch. Compatibility does not make it a local or permanent alternative: Nintendo explicitly warns that the game requires an internet connection to play and recommends trying the free demo before purchase. Nintendo’s Cloud Version listing includes those notices.
Square Enix ended Cloud Version sales on June 9, 2026. Existing owners can continue playing only while the service remains available; Square Enix says the titles are scheduled to remain playable until June 9, 2027, at 14:59 UTC. That makes the Cloud Version a limited-time option, not a durable substitute for the dedicated Switch 2 release. See the Square Enix Support Centre service notice.

Transfer Cloud Version save data and check discount eligibility
Square Enix Support says Cloud Version save data can transfer to the Switch 2 digital version. Eligible owners of the corresponding Cloud Version can also receive a 50% discount on that digital edition. The official notice and product listings do not provide a price, redemption deadline, or retailer process, so check the applicable Nintendo and Square Enix listings for the terms that apply to your account.
The owner discount applies to the corresponding digital Switch 2 title, not the physical KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III]. The collection includes HD 2.8, but Square Enix’s notice says it does not qualify for the Cloud Version owner discount. Square Enix’s service notice explains the save-transfer and discount details.

The package brings together three experiences that lead into KINGDOM HEARTS III:
- KINGDOM HEARTS Dream Drop Distance HD: a full-HD remaster featuring Sora and Riku taking the Mark of Mastery exam.
- KINGDOM HEARTS χ Back Cover: an HD movie about the Foretellers and the series’ origins.
- KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A fragmentary passage –: an episode that links to KINGDOM HEARTS III.
Nintendo’s listings describe the individual experiences on both editions: Switch 2 digital edition and Cloud Version.
