A preconstructed Commander deck is ready to play: choose its designated commander, place that card in the command zone, shuffle the other 99 cards, draw seven, and start at 40 life. Commander is usually a free-for-all multiplayer game, so you also need to understand commander recasting, commander-damage losses, and the table’s expectations before the first turn.

What you are playing

Commander is a multiplayer Magic: The Gathering format built around a legendary creature or other card designated as your commander. A normal preconstructed product supplies a complete 100-card deck: one commander and 99 other cards. The deck is generally “singleton,” meaning it cannot contain duplicate card names apart from basic lands, and every card must fit the commander’s color identity. The official Commander format overview is the current reference for format rules; an older beginner explanation is available in Wizards’ Introduction to Commander.

Unlike a one-on-one duel, Commander normally uses a free-for-all table. The official rules describe four players, while the format is commonly played with roughly three to five people. You take turns clockwise, and when combat begins you may attack any opponent rather than being restricted to the player on your left or right.

The three rules that make Commander different

  • Command zone: Your commander begins the game face up in a separate command zone instead of being shuffled into your library. You may cast it from there.
  • Commander tax: Each time you cast that commander from the command zone after the first, its cost increases by two generic mana for every earlier command-zone cast during the game.
  • Commander damage: A player who has received at least 21 combat damage from one specific commander over the course of the game loses. Damage from different commanders is tracked separately.

Those rules are the essentials to keep visible while learning. Everything else—mana, spells, combat timing, triggered abilities, and the normal turn structure—uses the ordinary Magic rules.

Choose and identify your preconstructed deck

Start with the deck’s printed list or product label. Find the designated commander and set that card aside; it is not one of the 99 cards you shuffle. Check its color identity before adding or removing cards. A card’s color identity includes the mana symbols and color indicators in its rules and characteristic-defining text, so a card that looks colorless can still be restricted by a colored symbol in its text.

Foundations Commander decks released in 2026

Wizards announced five ready-to-play 100-card Commander decks in its September 18, 2026 Foundations Commander Decklists announcement. The announced release date was October 2, 2026. The products were presented as introductions to the format, with straightforward mono-color strategies and themes involving artifacts, large creatures, or Dragons. The announcement names these decks:

Deck Published theme or signal How to choose
Calling All Angels The name signals an Angels theme. Choose it if the creature type and theme appeal to you; the announcement does not provide a tested power ranking.
Keen Engineering The announcement’s examples include artifact-focused play. Pick it if building around artifacts sounds more interesting than a creature-heavy plan.
Wretched Ranks The name signals a ranks or army-style theme. Use the published deck list to see its commander and exact color identity before deciding.
Reign of Dragons The announcement specifically mentions Dragons as an example strategy. Choose it if you want a deck whose visible identity is large, flying Dragon creatures.
Tramplesaurus Rex The announcement mentions big-creature strategies. Consider it if attacking with large creatures and trample is the play pattern you want to learn.

The announcement does not establish that any of these decks is stronger, easier, or more difficult than the others, and it does not publish comparative performance data. Product inventory and prices change by retailer, so check the live listing when buying. The goal of a first deck is a theme you will enjoy piloting, not a supposed ranking.

Prepare the table before shuffling

Use this procedure for a normal multiplayer game with a ready-to-play deck.

  1. Agree on the game. Confirm who is playing, whether the table is a free-for-all, and how competitive or fast everyone wants the game to feel. Preconstructed decks are not all at the same power level.
  2. Set commanders aside. Put each designated commander face up in its owner’s command zone. Everyone should be able to see which commander belongs to which player.
  3. Shuffle the libraries. Shuffle the remaining 99 cards in each deck. Those cards form the player’s library.
  4. Set starting life. Each player begins at 40 life, not the 20 life used in ordinary two-player Constructed play.
  5. Draw seven cards. Each player draws an opening hand of seven from their shuffled library.
  6. Choose the first player and seats. Decide who takes the first turn and arrange the table so turns proceed clockwise. The normal multiplayer game is free-for-all: on your turn, opponents are legal attack targets unless a card says otherwise.

Keep a visible life total and a separate way to mark combat damage from each commander. A single pooled “commander damage” number is incorrect when several commanders have hit you.

Understand a turn without memorizing every card

Commander does not replace the normal Magic turn. Explain the turn in this order:

  1. Untap step: Untap permanents as instructed by the rules and card effects.
  2. Upkeep step: Resolve abilities that trigger at the beginning of upkeep and make any choices they require.
  3. Draw step: Draw for the turn unless an effect changes that instruction.
  4. First main phase: Cast creatures, sorceries, artifacts, enchantments, planeswalkers, and other spells allowed at that time. You may also play a land during a main phase when the rules permit it.
  5. Combat phase: Declare attackers, choose legal opponents or planeswalkers as targets where applicable, declare blockers, and resolve combat damage and related triggers.
  6. Second main phase: Cast additional spells and play a land if you have not used your land play for the turn.
  7. End step and cleanup: Resolve end-step triggers, then perform the normal cleanup actions.

That sequence is a teaching framework, not a special Commander shortcut. Read a card when it creates an exception. If a commander says “whenever,” “at the beginning of,” or “you may,” its text controls what happens in addition to the ordinary turn.

Read the commander first

Before the first draw, read the commander’s name, mana cost, type line, power and toughness, and every line of rules text. Identify what the card rewards: attacking, casting spells, making tokens, sacrificing permanents, dealing damage, or another action. Then scan the deck for cards that use the same words or interact with the same permanent types. This gives you a practical plan without requiring you to memorize all 100 cards.

When a card is unclear, read its full text aloud and ask the table to pause while you resolve it. The commander’s visible location and the card’s exact wording matter more than a guess based on its artwork or name.

Cast and recast your commander correctly

Your commander may be cast from the command zone whenever you could normally cast that spell. Pay its printed mana cost the first time. If it returns to the command zone and you cast it from there again, add two generic mana to the cost for each earlier time you cast it from the command zone during that game.

For example, a commander with a printed cost of 3G costs 3G the first time, 5G the second time, and 7G the third time when all casts were from the command zone. The additional cost is generic mana: any mana can pay those extra two-mana increments, while the original colored symbols still require the appropriate colors.

Track the number of command-zone casts separately from times the commander was cast from another zone. The increase applies to command-zone casts during the current game; it is not a permanent change to the card.

Track commander damage as a separate loss condition

Combat damage from a commander is recorded by source and by recipient. If Commander A deals you 8 damage, then 7, then 6 later, you have taken 21 from Commander A and lose immediately under the commander-damage rule. Damage from Commander B does not combine with those points, so 12 from A plus 9 from B is not 21 commander damage from either source.

Use a counter, phone note, or paper log with one line per opposing commander. Record only combat damage dealt by that commander; noncombat damage from an ability does not count toward the 21-point commander-damage threshold. Reset the record when a new game begins.

Play the deck’s plan instead of every card at once

Start with the commander’s repeated action

Ask, “What does this commander want me to do every turn?” If it rewards attacking, look for creatures that can attack safely and effects that increase combat pressure. If it rewards artifacts, identify which artifacts advance the board and which merely provide mana or utility. If it rewards large creatures, plan your early turns around producing enough mana to cast them. These are decision aids, not guarantees about a deck’s exact contents.

Prioritize functional roles

  • Mana: Lands and mana-producing cards let you cast the rest of the deck.
  • Threats: Creatures or other permanents that can eventually reduce opponents’ life totals.
  • Interaction: Spells and abilities that answer an opposing permanent or disrupt a dangerous play.
  • Card flow: Effects that help you see additional cards or replace cards in hand.
  • Payoffs: Cards that become better when you perform the deck’s main action.

You do not need to classify every card before playing. Learn one or two cards at a time, and keep the printed deck list nearby so you can identify a card’s role when it appears.

Use the first game as a rules tutorial

Tell the table that you are learning with a preconstructed deck. When you cast a spell, announce its target and explain what you expect it to do. When another player’s card creates a confusing interaction, ask them to explain the sequence before anyone moves to the next step. This keeps the game moving while making the deck’s plan visible to everyone.

Set expectations with the table

A short conversation prevents the most common first-game mismatch. Ask how fast people expect the game to be, whether anyone is using a highly tuned deck, and whether the group wants a relaxed introductory game or a more competitive one. Because preconstructed products vary, “precon” alone does not identify a single power level.

Some groups use Commander Brackets as a shared vocabulary. Wizards’ October 21, 2025 Commander Brackets Beta Update describes the system as optional beta guidance. The update also says Bracket 2, or Core, is no longer defined by an assumption that every average preconstructed deck belongs there; the products differ enough that the label should not be assigned automatically. If your group uses brackets, describe the actual deck and its intended experience rather than asserting a bracket from the packaging alone.

Common first-game problems and fixes

“I shuffled my commander into the deck.”

Set it aside before shuffling. The designated commander starts face up in the command zone, while the other 99 cards become the library.

“I paid the same cost for my commander every time.”

Count previous casts from the command zone and add two generic mana for each one. Keep a small tally near your commander.

“We counted all commander damage together.”

Separate the totals by commander. Only 21 or more combat damage from the same commander causes the special loss.

“Everyone attacked the player on their left.”

That is a house choice, not the normal multiplayer rule. In a free-for-all, an attacking player may choose any opponent as a legal attack target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The table feels unfairly fast.”

Pause and compare expectations. A preconstructed deck is ready to play, but preconstructed decks are not identical in speed or strength. Finish the game if everyone agrees, or start a new game after choosing decks and a pace that match.

A compact first-game checklist

  • Locate the designated commander and verify its color identity.
  • Place the commander face up in the command zone.
  • Shuffle exactly the other 99 cards.
  • Agree on players, seating, turn order, and desired pace.
  • Set every player to 40 life and draw seven cards.
  • Keep the commander’s recast count visible.
  • Record combat damage separately for each opposing commander.
  • Use the normal turn order: untap, upkeep, draw, main phase, combat, second main phase, and end step.
  • Ask the table when a card or interaction is unclear.

What success looks like with a preconstructed deck

You are ready to play when you can identify your commander, explain its main ability, produce mana, follow the ordinary turn sequence, and track the two Commander-specific rules. You do not need to know the outcome in advance or prove that your deck is optimal. A good first game gives you enough information to recognize which cards support the commander’s plan, which turns felt awkward, and what questions to ask before the next game.

For current rules wording, use Wizards’ Commander format page. For Foundations product names and the announced October 2, 2026 release, consult the official decklist announcement. Those references let you confirm changes without relying on an old summary of the format.
