In Nintendo Switch Sports Basketball, the Joy-Con is your main input: swing it vertically to dribble or move, press X to pass, and hold ZR while raising the controller and flicking forward to shoot. Raise and point it upward to block, or swipe across your body to attempt a steal. Basketball arrived in version 1.5.0 on July 9, 2024, and works in Play Globally, Play Locally, and Play with Friends.
Basketball controls at a glance
The table below combines the action mapping reported by the Game8 guide with the basic dribble, pass, and shoot gestures also described by Nintendo Life’s July 10, 2024 review. The guide contains a few inconsistent button renderings, so treat the primary labels as the practical starting point rather than as an official Nintendo control chart.

| Action | Joy-Con input | Useful beginner cue |
|---|---|---|
| Dribble or move | Swing the Joy-Con vertically | Use comfortable, controlled swings; Game8 says larger, slower swings can move you at the same speed as smaller, faster ones. |
| Shoot | Hold ZR, raise the Joy-Con beside your head, then flick forward | Keep the controller steady and try to release the forward flick near the top of the jump. |
| Pass | Press X | Pass to a teammate who is open rather than directly screened by a defender. |
| Call for a pass | Press A | Use the signal while a teammate has possession and you are available. |
| Block | Raise and point the Joy-Con upward | Start early enough for the blocking jump to register before the shot is released. |
| Steal | Swipe the Joy-Con across your body | Attempt it selectively; a failed swipe can leave the opponent room to dash past. |
| Fake out | Move the Joy-Con slowly up and down while preparing to shoot | The motion is sensitive. Moving too quickly can be interpreted as a shot. |
| Three-Point mode: grab or hold the ball | Hold ZR or ZL while pointing the controller down | This input is specifically reported by Game8 for the three-point modes. |
Game8 renders one shooting reference as “ZR or ZY” and gives directional-button alternatives for some actions. Because those variants are not presented in Nintendo’s official compatibility FAQ, use the clearly identified X, A, and ZR inputs first and check the in-game prompt if your layout displays a different symbol.

Install the basketball update
Nintendo released Basketball with version 1.5.0 on July 9, 2024. Install the update before selecting the sport. Nintendo’s update information says the update is required for the game’s Internet features, so an unupdated copy can prevent online play even if the base game launches normally.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a compatible controller and mode
Nintendo says controller support varies by sport. Basketball uses supported Joy-Con configurations, while Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with the game. The game also does not support Handheld Mode; Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best play experience. If the game does not respond to your movements, check that a Joy-Con is paired and being used rather than a Pro Controller or the console in handheld form.
Choose how you want to play
Nintendo lists Basketball in Play Globally, Play Locally, and Play with Friends. Play Globally and other Internet features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership, in addition to the current game update. Local play is the appropriate choice when everyone is sharing the same console and room; the exact Joy-Con arrangement depends on the sport and the number of participants shown by the game.
Make the play area safe
Before a match, clear furniture, pets, drinks, and other people from the space around you. Nintendo’s game guidance says to stay aware of your surroundings, leave adequate room, and wear the Joy-Con wrist strap. Hold the controller securely without making exaggerated swings; the guide’s observation that slower, larger movements can be just as effective is also useful for staying controlled.

How to make each gesture register consistently
Dribbling and movement
Think of the vertical swing as a movement rhythm rather than a test of speed. Keep your elbow and shoulder relaxed, and use a repeatable range of motion. Very rapid swings are not automatically better. If your avatar barely moves, make the direction more clearly vertical and allow each swing to finish before starting the next. If movement feels erratic, reduce the size and speed until the game reads a consistent cadence.
Shooting
Shooting has three coordinated parts: the button hold, the upward preparation, and the forward wrist or arm flick. Begin the hold before raising the controller, keep the Joy-Con stable beside your head, and time the release toward the peak of the jump. A rushed flick can turn a setup motion into a weak or mistimed attempt. Practice the sequence without trying to change direction at the same time; once the motion is repeatable, add movement before the shot.
Passing and requesting the ball
Passing is most valuable when a defender is not occupying the lane between you and your teammate. Watch for a teammate who has separated from the defender, then use the pass input from the table. If you are open while a teammate controls the ball, use the pass signal so the carrier has a clear target. Signaling is not a guarantee that the ball will come to you, so keep moving into visible space instead of standing behind a defender.

Blocking
Blocking is an anticipation action. Watch the opponent’s body and begin the upward motion before the shot is fully released, because the jump takes time to register. Raising the Joy-Con after the ball is already in flight is often too late. Do not jump at every fake: wait for a convincing shooting motion when possible, or you may give the attacker an easy lane.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStealing
A cross-body swipe is a higher-risk defensive option. Use it when the opponent is exposed or has committed to a predictable approach, not as a constant response to every possession. Game8 warns that a missed attempt can let the opponent dash past you. If your swipe repeatedly fails, stay between the ball carrier and the basket and save the gesture for a clearer opening.
Fakes
Slow up-and-down controller movement can make a defender react while you prepare a shot. The timing is sensitive: accelerate the motion and the game may read it as the beginning of an actual shot. Keep the fake deliberately measured, then stop before committing to the genuine shooting sequence.

Three-Point practice
Game8 recommends the three-point modes as a way to work on long-range shots. The down-pointing hold used to grab or hold the ball is specific to those modes. Use them to repeat the same release timing without the extra decisions of a full team possession. This is third-party guidance rather than an official Nintendo training recommendation.
A simple beginner practice routine
- Set up in TV Mode. Pair a Joy-Con, attach the wrist strap, and stand where you can swing without contacting furniture or another player.
- Repeat movement first. Use controlled vertical swings until your avatar moves predictably. Do not increase speed just to make the motion look bigger.
- Add a passing decision. Move into open space, signal when you want the ball, and pass only when the teammate is not screened.
- Separate the shot into stages. Hold the shooting button, raise the controller beside your head, keep it steady, and practice the forward flick near the top of the jump.
- Introduce defense last. Watch several possessions before attempting a block or steal. Try the block when you can anticipate the shot and reserve the steal for a clear opening.
This sequence keeps the most timing-sensitive gesture separate from movement and defense. Once each part is reliable, combine them in the order a normal possession demands: move, find a teammate or space, then pass or shoot.

- Move into sight lines. A pass is easier to make when you are not directly behind a defender. Short, controlled movement is usually more useful than frantic swinging.
- Signal early. Calling for a pass gives the ball carrier information, but continue adjusting your position so the route remains open.
- Do not force a shot. If a defender is already in front of you, look for an open teammate instead of starting a rushed shooting motion.
- Protect against the counterattack. A speculative steal can fail and allow a dash past you. Maintaining a central defensive position is safer when the swipe timing is uncertain.
- Read the jump. On defense, begin a block before the opponent’s shot reaches its release point; waiting for the ball to appear above the shooter is usually too late.
Modes, connectivity, and controller troubleshooting
The basketball option is missing
Confirm that the game has downloaded version 1.5.0 or later. Basketball was added by that update, so an older installation will not contain the sport. If the console is offline, update it through the system’s normal software-update process before trying an Internet mode.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Online play will not start
Check both prerequisites Nintendo identifies: the game must be updated, and Internet features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. If either condition is missing, Play Globally and other online functions may be unavailable even though local play opens.
The controller is not responding
Use a paired Joy-Con configuration supported for the sport. A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is not compatible, and Handheld Mode is unsupported. Switch to TV Mode, reconnect the Joy-Con from the console’s controller menu, and retry the movement after confirming that the correct player is assigned the controller.
Movements register as the wrong action
Reduce the size and speed of your swings, especially when attempting a fake. Game8 notes that a quick up-and-down motion can be read as a shot. For shooting, keep the controller steady during the raise and make one clear forward flick rather than several small corrections.

What is officially established and what comes from guides
Nintendo’s published information establishes the July 9, 2024 version 1.5.0 release, the three listed play modes, the Internet-update requirement, Nintendo Switch Online for online features, supported Joy-Con arrangements, Pro Controller incompatibility, and the lack of Handheld Mode support. It does not provide a detailed basketball control table in the compatibility FAQ.
The individual action mappings and tactical advice in this guide come from Game8. Nintendo Life’s July 10, 2024 review independently echoes the basic dribble, pass, and hold-and-flick shooting gestures. Treat the block, steal, fake, three-point input, and timing recommendations as guide-based practical advice rather than as a complete official Nintendo specification.
