Check requirements and activation first
Rockstar’s current support listing gives the following baseline for the PC version. These are published requirements, not a promise that every machine will run the game perfectly. Some mobile, integrated and AGP graphics adapters may be incompatible even when other specifications appear sufficient.

The support page also says that installing and playing online require a Rockstar Games account and internet access for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification. Rockstar platform components and other required software may also be installed during setup.
The Steam listing shows 2 GB–16 GB of RAM and 35 GB of free disk space. The wider RAM presentation does not replace Rockstar’s direct minimum specification; treat 2 GB as the publisher’s stated baseline and allow more memory for Windows, drivers and background applications. Steam describes its listing as including the original game and previously released downloadable content, while edition, price and regional availability can change.

Because the requirements are from an older PC release, checking the graphics adapter matters more than comparing a modern CPU name alone. Confirm the card’s actual dedicated VRAM and whether it is integrated, mobile or AGP hardware. A machine can meet the processor and storage figures yet still fall outside Rockstar’s compatibility notes.
Install and complete the first launch
- Install from your authorized PC storefront. Leave at least 35 GB free before starting, and allow room for temporary installation files and updates.
- Install the Rockstar software requested by the installer. The PC version uses Rockstar account services for activation and entitlement checks.
- Sign in or create a Rockstar Games account. Keep internet access available until activation completes; the same connection may be required later for periodic verification and online play.
- Start the game once before tuning graphics. This creates configuration data and confirms that the executable, account and display mode work together.
- Open the Options menu and inspect Controls and Graphics. Make a note of the current resolution, antialiasing, VSync state and the VRAM indicator before changing anything.
If the game cannot activate, solve the account, internet or entitlement problem before changing graphics settings. A lower resolution cannot repair a failed license check.
On the first successful launch, resist the urge to apply several internet “fixes” at once. Establish that the game reaches its menu, loads a save or campaign section and accepts input. Then change one variable, test it, and keep a note of the result. This makes it much easier to reverse a setting that causes a blank display, stutter or control problem.
Choose and configure your controls
Mouse and keyboard
The PC version supports mouse and keyboard. In the game, open Options, then Controls, and select the keyboard or mouse controls to review bindings and sensitivity. Change only the actions you need first, test them in a short section of gameplay, and then adjust the rest. There is no single sensitivity value that is correct for every mouse, display resolution or player.
Check the complete binding list rather than assuming a console layout will feel natural on a keyboard. Test movement, aiming, shooting, cover, bullet time and the pause or menu commands in a safe section. If a new binding conflicts with an existing action, change one of the two commands and retest before continuing. Keeping a written note or screenshot of the original layout makes restoration quick.
XInput controllers
Rockstar documents support for XInput pads, including the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows. Open Options and Controls to configure the gamepad. Mouse-and-keyboard and controller input can be used interchangeably; on-screen prompts change to match the last input method detected. Only the first active XInput controller is used, so disconnect extra XInput devices if the game responds to the wrong pad.
If you prefer analog movement or a couch setup, an optional XInput-compatible PC controller is the straightforward hardware choice. It is not required to play, and compatibility, price and availability vary by retailer. The important distinction is XInput support, not a particular brand or model.

When prompts keep switching
Small mouse movements or a controller button press can become the most recently used input and change the on-screen hints. This is normal. Stop touching the other device while testing a control scheme, and disconnect unused controllers when you want a consistent keyboard or gamepad layout.
Fix unusually slow mouse sensitivity
Rockstar lists a targeted workaround for a mouse that feels too slow: turn off both MSAA and FXAA in the in-game options, then turn on VSync. The support instruction is a possible fix, not a guarantee for every hardware and driver combination:
Rockstar Games Customer Support: “A possible fix is to turn OFF MSAA and FXAA in the ingame options. Then turn on Vsync.”

Apply those changes, restart the demanding scene where the problem appears, and compare movement. If the response improves, decide whether the reduction in antialiasing quality is acceptable. If it does not, restore the previous values and adjust the mouse sensitivity and bindings in Options > Controls instead. VSync can also add mouse lag on some systems, so judge both aiming response and image tearing rather than assuming that one setting is always best. The workaround is documented on Rockstar’s mouse-sensitivity support page, last updated May 31, 2023.
Test the workaround in a repeatable place, such as a combat section that previously felt sluggish. Move the mouse slowly and quickly, aim at a fixed object, and then pan the camera. A setting that removes one symptom but creates obvious tearing or delayed aiming is not automatically an improvement. Keep the combination that feels consistent for your own display and input device.
Understand which graphics settings cost the most
NVIDIA’s game-specific guide identifies resolution, texture quality, shadow quality and MSAA as major users of graphics memory. The guide’s comparisons were made on a historical test system—GeForce GTX 680 2 GB, Intel Core i7 940, 3 GB RAM, Windows 7 64-bit and NVIDIA 301.42 WHQL drivers—so use the directions below to make decisions, not as promises of a particular frame rate on a modern PC.

Read the VRAM indicator as a capacity warning, not a promise of a particular frame rate. A setting can fit under the displayed limit and still expose a GPU or CPU bottleneck, while a full meter often predicts texture streaming trouble. Compare both smooth camera movement and texture loading after each adjustment.

Optimize performance one change at a time
- Pick a repeatable demanding scene. Use the same combat, particle-heavy or water-side section after every change. A quiet hallway can hide a setting that fails during a firefight.
- Record the starting state. Note resolution, texture, shadow, MSAA, FXAA, water and VSync values, along with whether the VRAM meter is close to its limit.
- Check resolution and VRAM first. If the meter is near full or the game stutters while new areas load, reduce resolution or texture quality in measured steps. Do not change several settings before testing, or you will not know which change helped.
- Reduce shadow quality next. This often frees GPU time without making character and environment textures look soft.
- Choose an antialiasing compromise. Try FXAA for low cost, or disable MSAA when memory and frame rate are tight. Inspect thin geometry and the overall sharpness after each change.
- Test water quality where it matters. If performance drops mainly near water, lower that option and retest the same location rather than assuming every scene is affected equally.
- Decide on VSync separately. Turn it on to address tearing, then check aiming and camera response. Turn it off if the added latency outweighs the visual benefit, except when evaluating the Rockstar sensitivity workaround.
- Keep the best stable combination. Once demanding scenes remain responsive, stop changing settings. Higher textures are worthwhile only while the VRAM counter and streaming remain stable.
These changes are directional: the balance depends on your GPU, processor, driver, display resolution and the other options enabled at the same time. The objective is a stable, responsive profile rather than a setting copied from NVIDIA’s older test machine.

Compare settings by four questions: does the image look better, how much GPU time does it consume, how much VRAM does it use, and does it change tearing or responsiveness? This prevents a common mistake—lowering a visually important option with little performance benefit while leaving a high-cost option enabled. Make the smallest change that solves the observed problem.
Use launch options only for a specific problem
NVIDIA documents several launch commands for display or compatibility cases:
-dx9selects the DirectX 9 renderer.-dx11selects the DirectX 11 renderer.-widthsets a requested horizontal display resolution.-heightsets a requested vertical display resolution.
Enter a command in the launch-options field provided by your PC launcher, then start the game and verify the result. Use one change at a time: a renderer switch can affect compatibility, while width and height are useful when the normal display selection cannot show a desired mode. Remove a command that does not solve the problem instead of accumulating permanent overrides.

Use a renderer command only when you are diagnosing a compatibility or display issue. Do not assume that DirectX 9 or DirectX 11 is universally faster; the useful choice depends on the system and the problem being tested. Likewise, width and height are display overrides, not automatic performance optimizers.
Do not use -availablevidmem as a routine performance boost or claim more video memory than the graphics card physically has. NVIDIA warns that an inflated allowance can produce stuttering, slowdowns, missing textures and crashes. The in-game VRAM counter is a safer guide to what the hardware can actually hold.
Troubleshoot common PC problems
The game will not start or activation fails
- Confirm that the operating system is 64-bit Windows 10 and that at least 35 GB is free.
- Make sure the Rockstar account is signed in and that the PC is online for activation or entitlement verification.
- Allow the required Rockstar software and other installer components to finish before launching again.
- Check the graphics adapter against Rockstar’s compatibility notes; mobile, integrated and AGP hardware may be unsupported.
If activation worked previously but a later launch requests verification, provide internet access and sign in again rather than repeatedly reinstalling graphics drivers. Installation and entitlement checks are separate from frame-rate tuning.
Frame rate falls or the game stutters
- Watch the VRAM meter while reproducing the slowdown.
- Lower resolution or texture quality if memory is saturated.
- Lower shadow quality, then test MSAA and FXAA independently.
- For drops concentrated near water, test a lower water-quality value in that area.
- Do not expect audio-slider changes to help, and do not force a false VRAM allowance.
Textures disappear or the game crashes after a graphics change
Restore the last stable settings, especially any custom memory allowance, then restart. Re-enable options one by one while watching the VRAM meter. Missing textures and crashes after an aggressive -availablevidmem value are a warning that the allowance exceeds what the card can reliably provide.
The controller is not detected or the wrong controller responds
Use an XInput-compatible pad and disconnect other active XInput devices; the game uses only the first active XInput controller. Reopen Options > Controls after reconnecting it. A DirectInput device may work with -joysticktype, but that option is an unsupported convenience feature rather than a guarantee for every third-party pad.

The image tears or aiming feels delayed
VSync is the relevant trade-off: it can reduce tearing but may introduce mouse lag or affect performance. Compare VSync on and off in the same scene. If the complaint is specifically very low mouse sensitivity, test Rockstar’s combination of VSync on with MSAA and FXAA off, then keep the state that gives the better balance for your hardware.
