Neither method is mandatory. The game accepts mouse and keyboard on its own, while a controller is an optional input device. Choose based on the way you prefer to aim, move and hold the game rather than assuming one method is universally faster.

A controller is therefore a preference purchase, not a requirement. If you already have a documented XInput pad, connect it and play; if not, there is no setup cost beyond the game because the keyboard and mouse method is built in. No particular current controller model or price is required by Rockstar’s guidance.
How to play with mouse and keyboard
Start without a controller
- Connect your keyboard and mouse to Windows and confirm that both work outside the game.
- Launch Max Payne 3 from your installed PC copy.

- Keep the mouse on a surface where you can make a full, controlled movement without hitting the edge of the desk.
- Use the game’s control settings to identify whether a binding has been changed before troubleshooting an apparent missing command.
- If a controller is connected but you want keyboard prompts, press a keyboard or mouse input and watch the help display change.
Do not assume that a key shown in a third-party guide matches your layout. Profiles, remapped keys and regional keyboard differences can all make a copied mapping misleading.

If the game opens with controller symbols after you intended to use the keyboard, simply press a key or move the mouse and check the help overlay again. The display reflects recent input, so you do not need to unplug a controller just to restore keyboard prompts. Conversely, touching the gamepad will bring the controller prompts back.
How to play with an XInput controller
Connect a supported controller
- Connect an XInput-compatible controller to the PC. Rockstar’s documented example is the Xbox 360 pad for Windows.
- You may connect it before launching the game or while the game is running.
- Start Max Payne 3 and press a controller button to make it the active input method.
- Use the game’s help prompts and control settings to confirm that controller actions are being displayed.
Rockstar states that only the first active XInput controller, identified as controller ID 1, is used. If several XInput devices are connected, the game may ignore the one you intended to use because another device has taken that first position.

- Leave the intended controller connected as the only active XInput device.

The optional controller category is useful only if your existing hardware is unsuitable. You do not need to buy a gamepad to play Max Payne 3 on PC because mouse and keyboard are supported.
When diagnosing a controller, change one variable at a time. First make the intended pad the only XInput device, then launch or relaunch the game and test its prompts. Adding remappers, virtual devices or multiple adapters at the same time can make the ID 1 rule harder to verify. The argument is a possible workaround for an unsupported controller that the game can detect. Rockstar explicitly presents it as a convenience feature, so it may not correct every button, axis, vibration or menu-navigation problem. If the result is unusable, remove the argument and return to mouse and keyboard or a documented XInput device.
Do not describe the command-line option as a universal converter from DirectInput to XInput. Its purpose is to select one of the layouts the game knows about. A detected pad can still have incorrect button order, missing axes or incomplete menu behavior, and Rockstar does not guarantee that an unsupported model will become fully functional.

Switching between controller and mouse during play
Max Payne 3 does not require you to choose one input method permanently. Rockstar says the methods can be used interchangeably, including moving with a controller and then switching to mouse and keyboard while on foot.

If prompts appear to be “wrong,” first check which device supplied the last input. The display follows recent activity; it is not necessarily evidence that the game has lost the other device.
This behavior also explains why a mixed setup can appear inconsistent from one moment to the next. Pressing a controller button can change the displayed hints even if the mouse remains connected and available. Pressing a key or moving the mouse changes them back. The prompt change is an input-state indicator, not a requirement to restart the level or select a permanent mode.

- After changing a binding, verify it in a low-risk area before relying on it during a difficult sequence.
- When a prompt changes from keyboard symbols to controller buttons, remember that the game is reporting the last-used input method.
Because layouts can be changed, a universal key chart is less reliable than checking your own settings. This is especially important when following advice written for a different edition, profile or keyboard layout.
If an action appears unbound, first check whether the control profile was altered rather than assuming the game lacks that command. Compare the current settings with the PC Manual, make the smallest needed change, and test it before continuing. This avoids confusing a remapped control with a compatibility failure.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game ignores my controller
- Confirm that the device is an XInput controller or appears in Rockstar’s documented DirectInput information.

Only some buttons work

The game will not activate or play online
Check the Rockstar Games account login and internet connection. Rockstar requires internet access for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification. This is separate from whether the control device is recognized.
The installation fails before controls appear
Compare the PC with Rockstar’s published baseline: Windows 10 64-bit, 2 GB memory and 35 GB of HDD space, plus the listed processor, graphics, sound and account requirements. Leave additional capacity for updates or downloadable content because Rockstar says requirements can change.
My controller works in Windows but not in the game
Windows recognition alone does not establish that Max Payne 3 supports the device.
