The short version: Minecraft Bedrock on PC is the Windows edition officially labeled Minecraft for Windows. Install the official Minecraft Launcher, sign in with your Microsoft account, select Minecraft for Windows rather than Java Edition, and choose Play.

What you need to play Bedrock on a PC

To play Minecraft Bedrock on a Windows PC, install the official Minecraft Launcher, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or has eligible PC Game Pass access, select Minecraft for Windows, and choose Play. “Minecraft for Windows” is the current name commonly used for the PC version of Bedrock.

Do not select Minecraft: Java Edition if you want Bedrock multiplayer or Bedrock worlds. Java and Bedrock are separate editions: their saves are not interchangeable, and players using Java cannot directly join a Bedrock world, Realm, or server.

1. Check the PC and account requirements

The PC version of Bedrock is designed for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The official Minecraft Launcher currently requires Windows 10 or later to continue receiving launcher updates. Older versions of Windows may eventually lose access to updates or some multiplayer functionality. Check the current requirements in the official Minecraft download documentation before installing.

  • MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
  • PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
  • SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
  • VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

You will also need:

  • A Microsoft account. This is the account used for the purchase, Game Pass access, friends list, permissions, and Marketplace content.
  • An internet connection to download the launcher and game, sign in, receive updates, and use online multiplayer.
  • A PC that meets the current Windows, graphics, memory, and storage requirements listed by Microsoft or Xbox.
  • Appropriate Microsoft account privacy and online-safety permissions if the player is a child or uses a managed family account.

A single-player world is the simplest way to begin. Multiplayer adds account permissions, compatible game versions, network requirements, and—when applicable—Realm or server details.

2. Buy or access Minecraft for Windows

Buy the PC bundle

The standard PC purchase is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. It includes both Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock) and Minecraft: Java Edition through the Minecraft Launcher. This is normally the best choice if you want permanent access to both PC editions rather than access tied to a subscription. Confirm the platform, edition, seller, and delivery format before purchasing from any retailer; listings and prices vary by country and can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are comparing listings, the useful product name is Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition for PC. A legitimate PC purchase should not be confused with a console copy, a mobile version, a used account, or an unofficial account credential.

Use PC Game Pass

Xbox states that PC players can access the Java and Bedrock package through an eligible Game Pass subscription. This is access through the subscription catalog, not permanent ownership: if the subscription ends or the catalog terms change, access may end. Sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the subscription.

Try the demo, where available

If you do not own the game, the launcher may offer a PC demo after you sign in. Minecraft support describes the trial as approximately 90 minutes of play in single-player Survival mode. Commands, multiplayer, and Realms are not available in that trial, and availability can vary by region or platform.

3. Install the official Minecraft Launcher

  1. Download the launcher from Minecraft.net or install it through the Microsoft Store.
  2. Open the installer and complete the installation.
  3. Start Minecraft Launcher and choose the Microsoft sign-in option.
  4. Sign in with the account that owns Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC or has the relevant PC Game Pass access.
  5. Wait for the launcher to detect the available game editions.
  6. Select Minecraft for Windows. Depending on the launcher or support page, this may also be described as the Bedrock edition.
  7. Choose Install if the game is not installed yet.
  8. When installation finishes, select Play.

The launcher may show both games side by side. The reliable choice is the Windows/Bedrock entry, not the Java entry. If the game appears locked or the launcher says that you do not own it, verify that you signed in with the purchasing or Game Pass account rather than creating or using a second Microsoft account.

4. Start your first Bedrock world

After Minecraft for Windows opens, select Play, then choose Create New or Create New World. Review the settings before creating the world.

  • Survival: gather resources, craft tools, manage health and hunger, explore, and defend yourself from hostile mobs.
  • Creative: use unlimited resources and fly. It is useful for building, experimenting, or learning the controls without the pressure of Survival.
  • Difficulty: choose a challenge level appropriate for the player. You can adjust many world settings, but some choices can affect achievements or the way the world behaves.
  • Multiplayer: enable the world’s multiplayer option if friends should be able to join. Account permissions can still prevent multiplayer even when the world setting is enabled.

Bedrock worlds are stored in the Bedrock ecosystem. Do not assume that a Java world can simply be opened in Minecraft for Windows; the editions use different save formats and multiplayer systems.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

5. Learn the PC controls

Keyboard and mouse are sufficient for normal Bedrock play. Minecraft’s official controls guide identifies these common defaults:

Action Typical default
Move W, A, S, D
Look around Move the mouse
Jump Spacebar
Break or attack Left mouse button
Use or place Right mouse button
Inventory E
Sneak Left Shift
Sprint Commonly Left Control

Creative mode normally begins flight when you double-tap the Spacebar. Key assignments can differ by configuration, keyboard layout, or accessibility setting. Open the in-game Settings or Options menu and inspect Controls if an action does not work. You can remap controls and restore the defaults from that menu.

6. Use a controller instead

A controller is optional; Bedrock on PC works with keyboard and mouse. It can be more comfortable for players who prefer console-style controls, couch play, or an alternative input method.

Minecraft’s controls documentation confirms controller support on computers. For an Xbox Wireless Controller, Microsoft’s pairing process is:

  1. Turn on the controller.
  2. Hold the controller’s Pair button until pairing mode starts.
  3. In Windows, open Bluetooth settings and choose Add device.
  4. Select Bluetooth.
  5. Choose Xbox Wireless Controller when it appears.

An Xbox Wireless Controller for PC is therefore an optional comfort upgrade, not a Minecraft requirement. Bluetooth support depends on the Windows device and compatible hardware; a wired connection or the appropriate wireless adapter may be preferable if Bluetooth pairing is unavailable.

7. Play Bedrock with friends

Bedrock is the right edition for cross-platform play with other Bedrock players on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and supported mobile devices. Everyone in the session must use Bedrock. A Java player cannot directly join a Bedrock server, Realm, or locally hosted Bedrock game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For friends on different platforms, add one another using Microsoft account gamertags. Minecraft’s support guidance says cross-platform friends need to be added to their Microsoft account friend lists before joining each other.

Join a friend’s world

  1. Make sure both players are signed in to Microsoft accounts.
  2. Add each other by Microsoft gamertag.
  3. Confirm both players are running compatible, preferably current, versions of Bedrock.
  4. Have the host open the world with multiplayer enabled.
  5. Open Play and select the friend’s available world from the Friends or joinable-world area.

If the world does not appear, check the host’s multiplayer setting, the friends list, account permissions, and whether both players are actually using Minecraft for Windows rather than Java.

Join a Realm

Realms Plus is Minecraft’s subscription-based private-world service for Bedrock. It is designed for persistent multiplayer and includes access to Marketplace content under the applicable subscription terms. The catalog, player limits, pricing, and availability can change, so confirm the current offer in the game or official Minecraft/Xbox listing before subscribing.

Realms Plus is optional. You do not need it to play single-player, join an ordinary friend-hosted world, or use every form of Bedrock multiplayer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Join a server

To use a featured or listed Bedrock server:

  1. Launch Minecraft for Windows.
  2. Choose Play.
  3. Open the Servers tab.
  4. Select a server and choose Play.

To add a server manually, choose the option to add a server and enter its name, address, and port when required. Minecraft support lists 19132 as the default Bedrock server port, but a particular server may use a different port. Only use server details from a source you trust.

8. Update Bedrock

Updates are normally delivered through the launcher when the PC is online. If an update is not offered automatically, open the launcher, select Minecraft: Bedrock Edition or Minecraft for Windows, open the Installation tab, and choose Check for Updates.

Keep every player on a compatible version. A version mismatch is one of the most common reasons friends cannot join each other. Bedrock’s features and labels change over time, so do not rely on an old tutorial’s screenshots or version number without checking the current release.

9. Fix the most common problems

The launcher opens Java instead of Bedrock

Return to the launcher and select Minecraft for Windows. Java and Bedrock are separate editions with separate worlds. Installing Java does not convert a Java save into a Bedrock save or make Java multiplayer compatible with Bedrock.

The game says you do not own it

Sign out of the launcher and sign back in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase. If you use PC Game Pass, use the account holding the active subscription. Also check whether the purchase was for PC rather than a console or mobile platform.

Multiplayer is unavailable

Check Microsoft account privacy and online-safety settings. These permissions affect Bedrock multiplayer on Windows even when the player is not using an Xbox console. Child accounts may require a parent or family organizer to permit online multiplayer, friend requests, and communication.

Friends cannot join

  • Confirm that every player is using Bedrock/Minecraft for Windows rather than Java.
  • Update everyone to compatible current versions.
  • Make sure the host’s world allows multiplayer.
  • Confirm that cross-platform friends were added through Microsoft gamertags.
  • Check the host’s internet connection and account permissions.
  • If joining a Realm, verify that the correct Microsoft account received the invitation.

The launcher will not install or update

Use the current launcher download from Minecraft.net or the Microsoft Store. Confirm that Windows 10 or later is installed, restart Windows and the launcher, then try the update again. If the Microsoft Store version and the Minecraft.net version behave differently, use the official support route for the version you installed rather than downloading an unofficial launcher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game is slow or crashes

First install updates from official Windows, graphics-card, and PC-manufacturer support channels. Close unnecessary applications, lower demanding graphics settings, and confirm that the PC meets the current requirements. If a controller or other peripheral is involved, test it separately and update its driver through the manufacturer or Windows.

For a confirmed missing, outdated, or incompatible hardware driver, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional tool to consider only after checking Windows and the hardware manufacturer.

Third-party repair utilities are not required to install or play Minecraft. A tool such as Outbyte PC Repair or Driver Updater should only be considered for broader Windows instability or driver-management problems after official troubleshooting sources have been tried. It is not a Minecraft requirement and should not replace Windows Update, the graphics-card manufacturer, or the PC maker’s support.

10. Optional extras: Marketplace, guides, and accessories

The Bedrock Marketplace distributes creator-made worlds, add-ons, skins, and texture packs. Purchases are associated with the relevant Microsoft account. Marketplace content is not the same thing as Java mods: the two editions have different content ecosystems and compatibility rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

New players may also find a Minecraft beginner guide or Minecraft controls guide useful for learning crafting, early Survival priorities, and keyboard shortcuts. It is supplemental, not necessary to launch or play the game.

Quick setup checklist

  • Use Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • Have a Microsoft account ready.
  • Own the PC bundle or have eligible PC Game Pass access.
  • Install the official Minecraft Launcher.
  • Select Minecraft for Windows, not Java Edition.
  • Create a Survival or Creative world.
  • Use keyboard and mouse, or pair a compatible controller.
  • For multiplayer, match the edition and game version and check account permissions.

For most players, the complete process takes only three decisions: obtain the PC edition, install the official launcher, and choose Minecraft for Windows. Everything else—controllers, Realms, Marketplace content, and servers—is optional.
