Yes—Minecraft multiplayer can work without internet if separate devices are connected to the same local network and use compatible editions and versions. For a same-console option, Bedrock Edition also supports local split-screen. LAN still requires a connection between devices; it does not mean playing together with no network at all.

Choose the right offline multiplayer option

Method Devices and connection Best fit
Bedrock LAN Separate compatible devices on the same local network Players using Bedrock Edition who want to join one host’s world
Java Open to LAN Separate computers on the same local network Players using Java Edition who want to join a host’s world
Bedrock split-screen One supported console and screen; local play Players sharing a console rather than joining from separate devices

A local network can connect nearby devices even when the network has no internet access. If devices are not connected to the same local network, LAN play will not connect them. Minecraft Realms are not an offline alternative: they are cloud-hosted and described by Minecraft as always online (Minecraft Realms).

How to host a Bedrock LAN world

  1. Connect each player’s compatible device to the same local network.
  2. On the host device, open Minecraft, select Play, then select the pencil/edit control beside the world you want to host.
  3. Open the Multiplayer tab. Turn on Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
  4. Start the world.
  5. On each joining device, open Play > Worlds and select the world marked LAN.

Minecraft’s Bedrock LAN help page says players need the most recent game version, devices that support LAN play, and the same network connection (Minecraft Help: Play Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on a Local Area Network (LAN)).

How to host a Java LAN world

  1. On the host computer, load or create the Java Edition world.
  2. Open the in-game menu and select Open to LAN.
  3. Choose any available world options you want, then select Start LAN World.
  4. Other players on the same local network can join the world from Minecraft’s multiplayer menu.

Opening a world to LAN makes it available on the local network; it does not make the world available over the internet. The host and players need compatible game versions. Minecraft’s Java multiplayer guide notes that snapshots or preview content may need to be changed back to the latest full release for most servers (Minecraft: How to Play on a Minecraft Server).

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Check editions, versions, and platform requirements

  • Match editions: Bedrock players join Bedrock games, and Java players join Java games. Java cross-play is among Windows, Mac, and Linux; Bedrock cross-play is within its supported Bedrock platforms. The two editions do not join one another’s hosted games (Minecraft: Java or Bedrock Edition).
  • Use compatible versions: Update Minecraft and make sure players can join the host’s version. A version mismatch can prevent joining. Java snapshots or preview versions may also limit compatibility with other worlds or servers.
  • Use a shared local network for separate devices: Minecraft’s instructions require the same network connection for Bedrock LAN. They do not specify that you must use a particular router or an Ethernet cable.
  • Expect possible account or console prompts: Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements say console and mobile players need a Microsoft Account for multiplayer, and that console online multiplayer requires the relevant platform subscription: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online (Minecraft multiplayer requirements). Those requirements do not settle whether every console’s LAN mode avoids every subscription or sign-in prompt in every configuration. Follow the prompts on your console; an online friend session and a local LAN session are not the same setup.

Can you play without any network connection?

Not with separate devices using LAN: they need a local network connection to find and join one another. Minecraft’s documented local alternative for playing together without connecting separate devices is Bedrock split-screen on a supported console (Minecraft edition comparison). The comparison does not specify every console’s exact setup, controller count, or current model requirements.

Quick troubleshooting

  • The LAN world does not appear: Confirm both devices are on the same local network, the host world is running, and the Bedrock host has enabled both multiplayer options. Then check that the games are updated and compatible.
  • The joining player cannot enter the world: Check that both players are on the same edition—Bedrock or Java—and a compatible version.
  • A console asks for an account or subscription: Read the prompt and check your console’s multiplayer requirements. Minecraft’s published requirements do not establish a universal subscription-free rule for every LAN configuration.
  • You have no connection between devices: LAN is not available without a shared local network. Use supported Bedrock split-screen if you have a compatible console setup.
