There is no normal native-PC installation path identified for the game. You will need PCSX2, a BIOS dump made from your own PS2, a dump of your own game disc, and a controller.
PCSX2 lists the NTSC-U and PAL versions of Shaolin Monks as Playable, although performance still depends on your hardware, emulator version, renderer, and settings. Check the PCSX2 compatibility page for release-specific information.

For most Windows users, the PS2 version is the simpler route because PCSX2 has mature documentation, automatic controller mapping, save states, internal-resolution scaling, and per-game settings.
Install PCSX2 on Windows
- Open the official PCSX2 setup page.
- Download the current Windows x64 Stable build. Stable updates less frequently and are the best starting point for beginners. Nightly builds may contain newer fixes but can also introduce regressions.
- Choose the installer or portable archive. The installer is simpler; the portable version keeps the emulator in one folder.
- Launch
pcsx2-qt. - Complete the first-run wizard and select your BIOS folder when prompted.
PCSX2 requires the x64 Microsoft Visual C++ runtime on Windows. If the program fails to start with an error mentioning MSVCP140.dll or a similar file, install the latest official x64 Visual C++ Redistributable, restart Windows if requested, and try again. Do not copy random DLL files into the emulator folder.
Dump and add your PS2 BIOS
PCSX2 cannot run without a BIOS, and the supported route is to dump that BIOS from your own PS2. PCSX2’s official BIOS guide uses a homebrew-enabled console and the biosdrain utility.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The exact preparation varies by PS2 model and condition. Depending on your console, a method such as FreeMcBoot, Fortuna, or FreeDVDBoot may be suitable. In broad terms, the process is:
- Prepare a compatible PS2 homebrew method.
- Place the official
biosdrainutility on the required USB or disc media. - Launch it through the PS2’s homebrew environment.
- Dump the BIOS to a FAT32 USB drive or through a supported network method.
- Copy the resulting files to your PC.
- Point PCSX2’s setup wizard or BIOS settings to that folder.
A valid dump can contain files such as .rom0, .rom1, and .nvm. If PCSX2 reports “No BIOS found,” confirm that you selected the folder containing the dump rather than an unrelated parent folder. Do not download a BIOS from a random website.
Dump Shaolin Monks from your disc
PCSX2 can start a physical disc directly, but creating an ISO is usually better. It avoids dependence on an aging optical drive, makes repeat launches faster, and lets you verify the image if the game freezes while loading.
PCSX2’s disc-dumping guide recommends tools including Media Preservation Frontend (MPF), which can use Redumper, with ImgBurn offered as another Windows option. PS2 discs are not encrypted, but an incomplete or inaccurate dump can cause black screens, crashes, or loading freezes.
- Insert your original Shaolin Monks disc into a compatible CD/DVD drive.
- Open MPF and click Scan for Discs.
- Confirm that the disc is identified as a Sony PlayStation 2 disc.
- Select the optical drive and choose an output folder.
- Start the dump and wait for it to finish completely.
- Keep the ISO in a clearly named game folder.
Use the disc you own and keep the resulting image associated with that copy. If verification fails or the game later refuses to load, redump the disc rather than immediately changing advanced emulator settings.
Add the game and launch it
To launch the ISO directly:
- Open PCSX2.
- Select System > Start File.
- Browse to your legally created ISO and select it.
To add it to the game list, open Settings > Game List, add the folder containing the ISO, and enable recursive scanning if your games are organized in subfolders. Refresh the list or reopen PCSX2.
Fast Boot normally skips the PS2 BIOS animation. If you need to inspect the BIOS screen while troubleshooting, open Settings > BIOS > Fast Boot and disable it temporarily.
Configure your controller
Connect the controller before configuring PCSX2. The simplest setup is an Xbox-style XInput controller:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Settings > Controllers.
- Select SDL as the input source. PCSX2 recommends SDL because it is cross-platform and supports automatic mapping.
- Choose Automatic Mapping.
- Test every face button, shoulder button, trigger, analog stick, and the D-pad.
- Save a profile if you customize the layout.
If SDL does not detect the device correctly, try XInput. DirectInput is a fallback for older or unusual controllers. Clear incorrect mappings and configure the buttons manually if necessary. Steam’s controller configuration can also send duplicate or unexpected input, so disable conflicting Steam controller settings when testing.
The game may show PlayStation-style button names even when you use an Xbox controller: PlayStation Cross corresponds to Xbox A, Circle to B, Square to X, and Triangle to Y. The exact on-screen prompts depend on the game release and configuration.
Use safe graphics settings first
Begin with the default renderer selected by PCSX2 and native internal resolution. Leave speedhacks and advanced game fixes at their defaults. First confirm that the unmodified game boots, controls correctly, saves, and reaches gameplay.
Once it is stable, increase internal resolution gradually—2× is a sensible first step. Higher scaling makes the game clearer but increases GPU load and can expose renderer-specific glitches. PCSX2 supports per-game properties, so enhancements can be limited to Shaolin Monks instead of affecting every PS2 game.
Recommended Free Tools
Widescreen, 60 FPS, and community patches
Enhancements are optional and should be added one at a time. Built-in widescreen features or verified game-specific patches can improve presentation, but they may stretch the HUD, alter camera framing, or remove effects. Disable them first whenever troubleshooting.
Do not assume a 60 FPS patch is universally safe. It can affect timing or behave differently between regional releases. Identify your game region and serial before applying one. The PCSX2 Wiki lists these identifiers:
- NTSC-U:
SLUS-21087 - PAL:
SLES-53524andSLES-53525
Community texture packs and fan patches may require a particular ISO revision, PCSX2 build, or texture directory. Apply patches to a legally dumped copy rather than downloading a modified ISO, and keep a clean backup of your original configuration.

| Symptom | First response |
|---|---|
| PCSX2 will not open | Install the official x64 Visual C++ runtime, restart Windows, remove manually copied DLLs, and try the portable build. |
| No BIOS found | Point PCSX2 to a valid BIOS dump made from your own PS2. |
| Black screen or loading failure | Verify the ISO and redump the physical disc if verification fails. |
| Slow gameplay | Plug in the laptop, use a high-performance power mode, restore defaults, and lower internal resolution. |
| Crackling or distorted audio | Check whether emulation is running below full speed and restore default settings. |
| Controller is missing | Use SDL automatic mapping, then try XInput and manual mapping. |
| Widescreen glitches | Disable widescreen hacks and test native resolution with default settings. |
| Saves fail | Confirm that a virtual memory card is attached and use the game’s in-game save menu. |
PCSX2 will not launch
Missing or incompatible Visual C++ runtime files are a common cause. Install the official x64 redistributable, restart Windows, and remove any DLLs manually copied into the PCSX2 directory. Windows shell customizations can also interfere; temporarily disable them if the problem persists.

Black screen or the game fails to load
A corrupt or incomplete ISO is the first thing to check. Right-click the game in the PCSX2 game list, open its properties, and use the available disc-track verification option. If verification fails, create a fresh dump from the physical disc. Test the current Stable build before applying game fixes.
Slow gameplay or unstable frame rate
- Plug in the laptop.
- Select Windows High Performance or an equivalent power mode.
- Close demanding background programs.
- Restore PCSX2’s default settings.
- Lower internal resolution.
- Try another supported renderer.
- Test Stable or Nightly if the other build has a specific compatibility problem.
Aggressive speedhacks should not be the first response; they can create audio, timing, or gameplay problems.
Audio crackling
Garbled sound often accompanies emulation running below full speed. Restore default settings, lower the graphics resolution, and check performance before looking for patches.
Saves do not work
In-game memory-card saves are the most authentic option. Confirm that a virtual memory card is attached to the controller slot and save through the game’s own menu. Save states are convenient but more dependent on the emulator version and settings. Back up your memory-card files before changing versions or experimenting with patches; their location varies by installation mode and PCSX2 configuration.
Should you use the Xbox version?
If you own the original Xbox release, xemu’s title page reports Shaolin Monks as working correctly. It is an alternative rather than the default recommendation. Xbox emulation requires different firmware files and game-image procedures, so PCSX2 is generally the more straightforward choice for readers with the PS2 edition and access to a PS2 BIOS dump.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play without a PS2?
For the PCSX2 route, you need a PS2 BIOS dump, and the supported method is dumping it from a PS2 you own. Without access to a suitable console, setup may not be straightforward.
Can I use the original disc?
Yes. PCSX2 can start a compatible physical disc through System > Start Disc, but making an ISO from your own disc is usually more reliable and convenient.
Is PCSX2 legal?
PCSX2 itself is free and open-source. Use your own BIOS and game dump, and check the laws in your jurisdiction.
Can I play with a keyboard?
PCSX2 can map keyboard input, but a controller is strongly preferable for this action-focused game.
Should I use Stable or Nightly?
Start with Stable. Try Nightly only if you need a newer compatibility fix or the PCSX2 project specifically recommends it.
