Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can play Nintendo DS games on a PC with an emulator such as DeSmuME or melonDS: install the emulator from its official project source, open a game file you are authorized to use, configure the two-screen display and controls, then save from inside the game. The key setup difference is that melonDS requires BIOS and firmware dumps from an original DS or DS Lite for firmware boot, while DeSmuME documents built-in BIOS and firmware for loading and running games.
How do I play DS games on my PC?
- Choose an emulator and download it from the project. DeSmuME and melonDS are documented Nintendo DS emulator options. Get the current build from the project’s official site or repository, not a third-party download mirror. melonDS provides an official downloads page with operating-system choices: melonDS downloads. Check that page for current platform support.
- Check whether the emulator needs system files for your chosen boot mode. The requirements differ between melonDS and DeSmuME; see the BIOS and firmware section below before configuring either one.
- Open a game file in the emulator. Use the emulator’s game-opening workflow to select a game file. DeSmuME’s Windows manual documents opening a ROM, but its manual is old, so menu labels and layout may have changed: DeSmuME Windows manual.
- Arrange the two screens and configure input. A DS game can use both screens and touch input. Choose a display arrangement and input mapping that work for the game you are playing. Exact menus and touch-control behavior vary; consult the current emulator documentation rather than relying on old screenshots.
- Save in the game. Use the game’s own save feature as your regular save. If supported, you can also create a save state as a separate convenience.
Which DS emulator should I use?
Both DeSmuME and melonDS are documented choices for running DS software. The available sources establish different BIOS and firmware setup paths, but they do not establish that one emulator is universally faster or more compatible. Choose based on the setup you can meet and the current platform support shown on each official project page.

Do I need BIOS files for melonDS or DeSmuME?
melonDS
For firmware boot, melonDS requires BIOS and firmware files dumped from an original Nintendo DS or DS Lite, according to the project’s FAQ. The cited guidance does not establish a universally applicable legal method for making or using those files. Do not download system files from an unverified third-party source.
DeSmuME
DeSmuME’s Windows manual says its internal BIOS and firmware can load and execute ROMs. External BIOS and firmware images enable additional original-system behavior, including a fuller DS boot. This describes the manual’s documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every current version or game uses the same setup.

How should I handle saves?
Make ordinary in-game saves first. A save state, where available, is an emulator snapshot that resumes from the captured point; it is useful as an extra convenience, but it is not a replacement for the game’s save system. DeSmuME’s manual documents save states: DeSmuME Windows manual.

Use game files only when you have the right to do so. Nintendo of America Support says that games offered through peer-to-peer networks or links to third-party file-hosting services are unauthorized copies, and states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” Nintendo also says it does not currently offer or authorize a product for playing or downloading its game files on personal computers: Nintendo of America Support: Are emulators and ROMs legal?
