Most original Nintendo Switch physical and digital games work on Nintendo Switch 2, but compatibility is title-specific. Insert a compatible game card, redownload a compatible digital purchase through the Nintendo Account that owns it, or load it as a virtual game card. Save data is separate: it must be transferred with the console, moved individually, or restored through Save Data Cloud where supported.
Nintendo Switch 2 is not fully backward-compatible. Some games do not start, while others run with controller, accessory, display, audio, or gameplay issues. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information and its current issue lists before moving a title you depend on.

Before you start
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet and install available system updates.
- Have the Nintendo Account credentials for any digital purchases.
- Prepare the original game card, or confirm that the game is in the purchasing account’s library.
- Check that the Switch 2 has enough internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card.
- Keep original Joy-Con, a Pro Controller, or a game-specific accessory nearby if the title requires one.
- Check Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility information, especially for accessory-dependent games.
In practice, a Switch game falls into one of four categories:
Recommended Free Tools
- Compatible: It starts and is generally playable.
- Compatible with issues: It starts but may have known controller, accessory, display, audio, or gameplay problems.
- Unsupported or affected at startup: It may not start correctly or may require a software fix.
- Switch 2 Edition available: The original version works, but an optional upgrade adds Switch 2-specific enhancements or content.
Nintendo publishes separate lists for startup problems, in-game issues, and planned resolutions. Because those lists can change, use the current versions rather than relying on a general claim that a particular game works.

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

How to play a physical Switch game card
- Turn on the Nintendo Switch 2.
- Insert the original Nintendo Switch game card into the Switch 2 game-card slot.
- Select the game icon from the HOME Menu.
- Install any system or game update when prompted, then start the game.
The game card must remain inserted while you play, just as it does on the original Switch. Nintendo’s transfer and game-access guidance confirms that compatible physical Switch cards can be used in Switch 2.
Inserting the card does not guarantee that every feature will work. A title may launch but still have a documented compatibility issue. Games that depend on original Joy-Con behavior, infrared functions, Nintendo Labo components, Ring-Con, a camera, a microphone, or another specialized peripheral need extra checking. A controller may pair wirelessly without offering the physical attachment or feature the game expects.
A physical Switch 2 Edition release may contain the original game and its upgrade content, but packaging and edition details vary by title. Conversely, a Switch 2-exclusive game card will not run on the original Switch.

How to play a digital Switch game
If you are replacing your old Switch
Use Nintendo’s System Transfer process. It can move user accounts, settings, digital purchases, and eligible save data from the original console to Switch 2. The new console needs an internet connection, and at least one user on the original system must be linked to a Nintendo Account. Digital games are redownloaded after the transfer rather than physically copied as game cards.
Do not erase the old console until you have confirmed that the important games, accounts, and saves work on Switch 2. A transfer is also different from simply signing in: the transfer process is what moves the relevant console data.
If you are keeping both consoles
Use Virtual Game Cards to move a digital game between up to two paired Switch-family consoles:
- Open HOME Menu → Virtual Game Cards.
- Select the Nintendo Account and game.
- Pair the consoles if Nintendo requests it.
- Eject the virtual game card from one console.
- Load it on the other console.
- Download the game data if it is not already installed.
- Launch the game.
Once loaded, a virtual game card can be played without a continuing internet connection, and other users on that console can play it. The exact menu wording may vary with system software, so install current updates if the option is missing. Nintendo’s Virtual Game Card guide explains the process.

If you use more than two consoles
Online License Settings provide another option for a purchased digital game or DLC on three or more systems. This method has important limits: the console must connect to the internet when the game starts, the purchasing Nintendo Account is the only account that can use the software under this method, and a game may be suspended if the license cannot be verified for an extended period. The same game cannot run simultaneously on multiple systems through either virtual game cards or online licensing. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ for the current licensing rules.
How to move save data
Loading a physical game card or digital license does not move your progress. Switch save data is stored on the console, not on the game card, and loading a virtual game card does not bring the save with it.
Choose one of these methods:
- Full System Transfer: Best when replacing an old Switch. It moves the relevant user, settings, software-access, and eligible save information to Switch 2.
- Individual save-data transfer: Useful when moving one user’s or one game’s save rather than migrating the entire console.
- Save Data Cloud: Restore a supported game’s cloud save with a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Not every game supports cloud saves, and some titles have special rules.
Before transferring, confirm the destination console and protect any progress you still need on the source console. A transferred save and a separately created save on Switch 2 can overwrite one another or create progress-loss risks. Keep the old console intact until the new save has opened successfully. For title-specific exceptions, use Nintendo’s save-data guidance and save-transfer support page.
Do you need a Switch 2 Edition upgrade?
No. A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is not generally required to play a compatible original Switch game. The original version can usually be played as owned, without buying it again.
| Version | Plays on Switch 2 | Switch 2 enhancements | Additional purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Switch game | Usually, if compatible | No title-specific upgrade features | No, if already owned |
| Updated original game | Usually | May include compatibility improvements | Usually no |
| Switch 2 Edition | Yes | Yes | Full edition or an upgrade pack |
| Switch 2-exclusive game | Yes | Switch 2-only software | Cannot run on original Switch |
For selected games, an upgrade pack or Switch 2 Edition can add higher resolution, improved frame rates, faster loading, HDR, new modes or content, mouse controls, camera or microphone features, GameShare, or other game-specific functions. The exact benefits vary by title.
Owners of the original physical or digital game may be able to buy an upgrade through Nintendo eShop, the Nintendo Store, or a participating retailer. Some eligible upgrade packs are included at no additional cost for active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members, but this applies only to the titles Nintendo lists. Check Nintendo’s upgrade instructions and current Switch 2 Edition catalog. Prices and eligibility vary by game, region, and retailer.
An upgrade does not make Switch 2-only features available on the original Switch. On an original Switch, a Switch 2 Edition functions as the Switch version. Also distinguish between an ordinary free update, a paid upgrade pack, and a Switch 2 Edition: they are not interchangeable terms.

What happens to DLC?
Digital DLC belongs to the purchasing Nintendo Account and can be managed with the game’s virtual game card. DLC bought for a physical game may appear as its own virtual game card, but it still requires the physical base game.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Moving or loading the base game does not automatically resolve compatibility problems affecting DLC. A Switch 2 Edition may also exclude expansions that were sold separately. Nintendo gives the example that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass remains separate from the Switch 2 Edition and still requires the full game. Check each game’s listing rather than assuming an upgrade includes every previously sold add-on.
Controller, accessory, and storage limitations
- Original Joy-Con: They can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach directly to the Switch 2 console.
- Original Switch Pro Controller: It can pair wirelessly and can be charged through the Switch 2 dock using USB.
- Original Switch dock: It is not compatible with Switch 2.
- microSD cards: Switch 2 uses microSD Express for Switch 2 game data. A conventional Switch microSD card cannot store Switch 2 games, DLC, or updates. It can still be used for viewing or importing screenshots and videos.
These limits matter for games requiring attachment-specific Joy-Con behavior, infrared, motion input, Ring-Con, Nintendo Labo, cameras, microphones, or other specialized hardware. If a required accessory cannot connect or operate as the game expects, use the original Switch for that title even if the software itself launches.
What to do if a game will not start
- Restart Switch 2.
- Install the latest Switch 2 system update and the game’s update.
- For a physical title, remove and reinsert the game card. For a digital title, confirm that the virtual game card is loaded or that the online license can be verified.
- Confirm that the Nintendo Account that purchased the game is linked to the console.
- Check available storage and install the game data or update if necessary.
- Check Nintendo’s current startup-issue list and in-game issue list.
- Pair the original controller or connect the required accessory in the way the game supports.
- If the title remains unsupported or depends on hardware Switch 2 cannot use, play it on the original Switch.
If the game icon does not appear
Check the purchasing account, then open HOME Menu → Virtual Game Cards and see which console currently has the title loaded. Redownload the software from the account’s library, confirm that System Transfer was completed if you are replacing a console, and check Nintendo’s compatibility list.
If the game launches but a feature fails
Update both the console and game, then check Nintendo’s issue list for the exact title. Pair original Joy-Con or a Pro Controller if required, and verify whether the accessory needs to attach physically rather than merely connect wirelessly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf progress is missing
The license moved, but the save did not. Do not delete the old console’s save. Use System Transfer, individual save-data transfer, or Save Data Cloud if that particular game supports it, then confirm the save opens correctly on Switch 2.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right path
| Your situation | Best first step | Remember |
|---|---|---|
| You own a physical game and are keeping the card | Insert the card and update the game | The card must remain inserted; saves still need separate transfer. |
| You are replacing an old Switch | Use System Transfer | Do not wipe the old console until accounts and saves are confirmed. |
| You are keeping both consoles | Use Virtual Game Cards | Up to two paired systems can manage them; saves do not move automatically. |
| You use three or more consoles | Consider Online License Settings | Internet verification is required and only the purchasing account can use the title this way. |
| You want better visuals or new features | Check for a Switch 2 Edition upgrade | It may cost extra or be included with Expansion Pack for selected games. |
