Use a Palworld dedicated server. Ordinary co-op runs from the host’s active game session, so the world is unavailable when that player quits. A dedicated server runs the world separately from the game client, allowing friends to join while the original host is offline. You can run the server on an always-on PC or deploy it to a VPS or managed Palworld server.

Steam players generally connect with a server address and port where direct connections are supported. Xbox and PS5 players use the in-game community-server list instead; they cannot simply type an IP address into the Xbox connection flow. Platform compatibility also depends on the Palworld server and client versions, so check the official guide for the version you are running.

Why ordinary co-op stops when the host leaves
Palworld’s standard multiplayer mode is session-based. One player starts a multiplayer world and invites up to three friends, for four players total. That player’s game client is also hosting the world simulation. When the host closes the game, the session closes with it, so invited players cannot continue building, exploring or progressing in that world.
This arrangement is fine for a small group that normally plays at the same time. It is not a persistent server: there is no separate process keeping the world available between the host’s sessions.

What a dedicated server changes
Pocketpair defines a dedicated server as a way to host the world without hosting it from the game client. The server process runs independently, so the player who originally created or administers the world does not have to leave Palworld running. Friends can connect at different times, provided the server machine or rented instance remains online.
A community server is not a different kind of world simulation. It is still a dedicated-server deployment, but it is registered to appear in Palworld’s in-game server list. That listing is important for console players, who use server discovery rather than entering an address manually.

Choose the right arrangement for your group
Stay with ordinary co-op when everyone plays together
If two to four people use the same platform and the session owner is normally available, ordinary co-op is the simplest option. It avoids server installation and administration. The unavoidable limitation is that nobody can enter that world while the host’s game session is closed.
Use a dedicated server for a persistent private world
Choose a dedicated server when players have different schedules, when the host is frequently offline, or when the group is larger than four. The server can run on a spare or always-on PC in your home, or on a rented VPS or managed Palworld hosting service. A managed service reduces operating work, while self-hosting gives you direct control over the machine and configuration.
Use community-server registration for console discovery
If Xbox or PS5 players need to join, plan on a community-server listing. The official Xbox instructions say Xbox players cannot enter an IP address in the connection flow. The version 0.5.0 guide also specifies community-server access for Xbox and PS5. Without a correctly published listing, a console player may have no usable way to find the server even when the server itself is online.
Check platform and version compatibility first
Do not promise cross-play solely because a server is dedicated. Pocketpair’s version 0.5.0 guide lists Steam, Xbox/Microsoft Store PC and macOS as default cross-play platforms. That same guide says PS5 cross-play is unavailable for that version. Later updates may change the supported combinations, so compare the guide version with the server build and every client before you rent hardware or migrate a group.
- Record the Palworld version that will run on the server.
- Ask every player which platform edition they use: Steam, Xbox, Microsoft Store PC, macOS or PS5.
- Check the current official server guide for that exact version, especially PS5 support.
- Plan community-server publication when any Xbox or PS5 player is involved.
Plan the server before installing it
Decide whether the world should be private or discoverable before you deploy. A private dedicated server is appropriate when you are sharing the address and credentials only with friends. A community listing is necessary for the console connection flow described by Pocketpair, but it also means you must pay attention to the listing name, visibility and access settings. Make the server name easy for your group to recognize and avoid publishing administrative details.

Assign one primary administrator and at least one backup administrator. The owner of the original co-op world does not automatically need to be the person who operates the dedicated server. Write down who can change world settings, restart the process, apply updates and invite new players. This prevents a persistent world from becoming inaccessible when one person is unavailable.
How to set up a Palworld dedicated server
The exact installer and launch options can change between Palworld releases, so follow Pocketpair’s server guide for the version you intend to run. The process below shows the reliable order of operations without assuming hardware specifications that Pocketpair has not published as universal requirements.
- Install the dedicated-server package. Deploy Pocketpair’s Palworld dedicated-server software on an always-on PC, VPS or managed hosting instance. Use an account and installation method appropriate to your platform and hosting provider.
- Start the server once. The first launch creates the server’s folders and platform configuration files. Wait for the process to finish its initial setup, then stop it cleanly.
- Back up the newly generated files. Keep an untouched copy of the initial configuration and world folders. A backup gives you a recovery point if an edit or update prevents startup.
- Edit the generated configuration. Apply the settings required by your group and platform. Pocketpair’s Xbox example uses
OptionSettings=(AllowConnectPlatform=Xbox). Use the syntax and file location shown in the guide for your server version; do not paste a setting from an older release into an unrelated configuration format. - Configure discovery and access. For direct connections, determine the address and port that the server exposes. For Xbox or PS5 access, enable and register the server as a community server so it can appear in Palworld’s in-game list.
- Start the server process again. Leave the host machine or rented instance running. The Palworld game client on the owner’s personal computer can be closed; only the dedicated-server process needs to remain active.
- Test with one player first. Verify that the server is visible or reachable, that the password and world settings work, and that the joining player can create a character and interact with the world before inviting the entire group.
- Keep versions aligned. Update the server and clients according to the same release expectations. A version mismatch can prevent joining even when the address, port and listing are correct.
How each platform connects
Steam and other clients that support direct entry
Give the player the server’s address and port, then have them use the direct-connection interface supported by their Palworld edition. The address must point to the reachable server endpoint, not merely the local address of a PC inside your home network. If you are self-hosting, the network owner may also need to permit the server’s traffic through the operating system and router; Pocketpair’s cited pages do not define one universal port-forwarding recipe for every network.
Xbox
Xbox players should search the community-server list in Palworld. The official Xbox instructions do not provide an IP-entry route for this platform. Confirm that the server is configured for Xbox access and that its community listing is published before asking console players to join.
PS5
Use the community-server list where the applicable official guide supports PS5. In Pocketpair’s version 0.5.0 documentation, PS5 cross-play is listed as unavailable, so a PS5 player cannot be assumed to join a Steam or Xbox/Microsoft Store PC server under that version. Recheck the current versioned documentation before combining PS5 with other platforms.

These platforms are included in the default cross-play group listed by the version 0.5.0 guide, subject to the server and client running compatible versions. Connection details still depend on whether the edition presents a direct-address option or expects a community listing.
Keeping the world available when you are offline
The owner’s game client can be completely closed. What must stay available is the dedicated-server process and the machine or hosted instance running it. Schedule operating-system restarts carefully, monitor whether the server process stops after an update, and make sure the hosting account does not suspend an idle instance. These are operational practices rather than Palworld guarantees; Pocketpair does not publish a universal uptime promise.

Decide who is allowed to administer the server. A small group can keep the address and password private. A community listing makes discovery easier for console players but requires more attention to the listing’s visibility and access settings. Restrict administrative credentials to trusted players and keep a separate record of configuration changes so a failed edit can be reversed.
Plan maintenance windows and tell players when updates or restarts may occur. Stop the server cleanly before editing files, and keep a dated copy of the last known-good configuration. If the machine reboots, verify that the server process starts again instead of assuming that the operating system will launch it automatically.
Capacity, permissions and world expectations
Pocketpair’s official FAQ states that ordinary co-op supports four players total and that a dedicated server supports up to 32 players in one world, where the server’s configuration and current version permit it. A larger player cap does not guarantee that every platform can connect: cross-play rules and community-server requirements still apply.
Dedicated servers also make it practical for a group to play asynchronously. Establish rules before opening the world: who can change settings, whether bases may be modified while the owner is away, how guild membership is handled and what happens after a major update. These social rules prevent conflicts that server software alone cannot resolve.

Start with the players you actually expect, test the world with one or two clients, and add the rest after connection and permissions work. If the group approaches the documented limit, review the current configuration rather than assuming that ordinary co-op limits still apply.
Costs and requirements that are not universal
You can self-host without paying a hosting company, but you are responsible for the computer, network connection, updates, backups and uptime. A VPS or managed provider adds a recurring charge and may simplify installation and monitoring. There is no single official price, CPU requirement, RAM requirement, bandwidth figure or uptime statistic that applies to every Palworld dedicated-server deployment, so treat provider specifications as service-specific rather than universal Palworld rules.
A managed host is mainly a convenience choice: it can bundle installation, control-panel access, restarts and backups. Self-hosting may be preferable when you already have an always-on machine and are comfortable maintaining the operating system and network. In either case, compare the service against your actual platform mix rather than selecting solely on advertised player slots.

Before choosing a host, verify the items that directly affect your group:
- Whether the provider supports the Palworld version you need.
- Whether Xbox and PS5 community-server listing is supported in your region and configuration.
- Where the server is located and whether that location is acceptable to your players.
- How updates, restarts, backups and failed-process recovery are handled.
- What the recurring price includes and whether storage or transfer limits apply.
- Whether you can download or restore the world files if you cancel the service.
Troubleshooting when friends cannot join
The server is not visible
Confirm that the dedicated-server process is running, that the listing was registered as a community server and that the listing settings allow the player’s platform. Xbox and PS5 players should search the community list rather than attempting direct IP entry. If the server was just created, restart the process after correcting the configuration and search again.
Direct connection fails
Check the address and port you gave the player, then verify that the endpoint is reachable from outside the host’s local network. Review the operating system’s firewall and any router or provider rule that controls the server traffic. A local address may work for someone on the same network but fail for an internet-based friend.
One platform joins but another cannot
Compare the server build and client versions, then check the official guide for the platform combination. A server can be healthy while a platform is excluded by the current cross-play rules. On version 0.5.0, the documented PS5 limitation is a compatibility rule, not a network fault.
The process stops after an update or reboot
Start the server manually and read its startup output for configuration or version errors. Confirm that the machine did not reboot into a logged-out state or suspend the hosted instance. Reapply only settings documented for the installed version, and keep a known-good copy of the configuration before making further edits.
Players enter but cannot use the intended settings
Check which configuration file the running process actually loaded and compare it with the version-specific guide. A setting copied into the wrong file or written in an older syntax may be ignored without changing the connection status. Stop the process, restore the known-good copy, apply one documented change at a time and retest.

The cited official pages do not establish a universal save-migration procedure from a host-owned co-op world to a dedicated server. Treat migration as version- and platform-dependent rather than assuming that copying a save folder will work. Preserve the original world before experimenting, identify the exact Palworld editions involved, and verify any migration method against current official documentation or a tool’s version-specific instructions.

If migration is not confirmed, start a separate test world on the dedicated server. Invite one trusted player, verify that the server saves and restarts correctly, and only then decide whether to attempt a transfer. Keep the original co-op world untouched until the new environment has been proven stable.

If the host must remain in the game for friends to play, you are using ordinary co-op. To keep the world available while that player is offline, run a dedicated server. Use direct address-and-port connections where the platform supports them; use a properly registered community-server listing for Xbox or PS5. Confirm the version-specific cross-play rules, especially PS5 support, before committing the group or paying for hosting.
