Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on Nintendo Switch is a turn-based role-playing game built around exploration, partner abilities, timed button presses and flexible character upgrades. Follow the trail of the Crystal Stars, use Mario’s paper transformations to reach new places, choose the partner who fits each obstacle or enemy, and perform Action Commands to increase damage or reduce incoming hits.

This guide explains the controls and battle loop for a first play session, then covers partners, badges, level-up choices, common sticking points and the Switch edition’s specific features.

What you need to know before starting

The Switch release is a one-player game on one console. It supports TV, handheld and tabletop modes, and Nintendo lists May 23, 2024 as its release date. The remake includes revamped graphics, an updated soundtrack, more accessible quick-travel pipes and the Partner Ring interface. Confirm regional language and availability on your local Nintendo listing, since store pages can differ by country. Nintendo’s product page

Your immediate objective is to explore the world and advance the story toward the Crystal Stars. You will not have every tool at the beginning. A path, chest or strange piece of scenery that cannot be solved now is often intended to be revisited after a new paper ability or partner becomes available.

Move through the paper world

Inspect routes instead of following only the obvious path

Talk to characters, walk around the edges of rooms and examine scenery that looks out of place. Progress is frequently hidden behind a side route, a switch, a narrow opening or a gap that Mario cannot cross in his normal form. Keep notes mentally about suspicious locations; returning later is part of the game’s progression rather than a sign that you missed a required item.

Use Mario’s paper transformations

Mario’s “cursed” abilities are practical traversal tools. He can fold into a plane to cross gaps, turn sideways to pass through narrow openings, and transform into a tube or a boat when the environment calls for it. These forms change where Mario can go and how puzzles work; they are not merely visual effects. Nintendo describes the Switch adventure and its paper abilities

Ask for guidance when a route is unclear

Press ZL outside battle to ask your current partner for a hint. When Goombella is with you, X can provide information about nearby places and people. Use those prompts before wandering aimlessly, then move on if the answer still does not reveal a solution. Nintendo’s beginner guidance specifically recommends continuing elsewhere and returning after you have learned more or met someone who can help. Nintendo beginner guide

Choose and switch partners

Partners matter in two places: they open or explain routes in the field, and they add a second set of actions in combat. Choosing one is therefore a tactical decision, not just a cosmetic preference. If an obstacle does not respond to your current partner, try another member of the group or continue the story until a new ability is available.

Switch quickly outside battle

Hold L to open the Partner Ring, then select the partner you need. The ring is the fastest way to test abilities while exploring because you do not have to return to a menu each time the environment changes. Nintendo Canada’s tips

Switch positions in battle

During a fight, press Y to swap the active partner position with Mario. Use this when you need a different character in the active position for the next command or when you want to place Mario and the partner in a more useful order. Nintendo Canada’s tips

Know what each partner contributes

Goombella is valuable before and during a fight. Her field advice can identify nearby information, and her Tattle command reveals an enemy’s current statistics and weaknesses. Nintendo’s partner guide also identifies Yoshi, Koops, Madame Flurrie and Admiral Bobbery as partners with their own field and battle abilities. The practical rule is to match the partner to the obstacle or enemy rather than search for one universally best choice. Play Nintendo’s swappable-partners guide

Understand the turn-based battle loop

Take a turn for Mario and a partner

Combat is turn-based: each side acts in sequence, and you select Mario’s action and your partner’s action. The command choices include a normal attack, an item, a partner move or a special move. Read the available targets and the enemy’s position before confirming an action, because the useful move depends on what is in front of you.

Perform every Action Command

Action Commands are timing-based button inputs shown on screen. Follow the cue while attacking to improve the result. When an enemy attacks, a correctly timed defensive input reduces the damage Mario or his partner receives. If your timing is inconsistent, slow down and watch the prompt rather than pressing early; the command is designed to reward accuracy, not rapid button mashing. Nintendo UK game page

Account for the audience

Battles take place in front of an audience. Spectators can throw helpful items into the arena, but they can also throw objects that hinder you. Pay attention to what lands on the stage instead of treating the audience as background decoration. Successful timing also helps fill the Star Power meter, which enables special moves. Nintendo’s overview of the battle system

Use Tattle when an enemy is new

With Goombella present, Tattle is an efficient first action against an unfamiliar enemy. It reveals the opponent’s current stats and weak points, and Nintendo says the information is retained the next time that enemy is encountered. After that first inspection, you can choose attacks and partners based on known weaknesses instead of guessing. Nintendo Canada’s tips

Build Mario with badges and level-ups

What badges do

Badges customize Mario’s moves and statistics. Some add moves, some improve strength and others make Action Command timing easier. They let you tune the game to your preferred approach: a player struggling with timing can prioritize badges that make that aspect more manageable, while another player can equip badges that support a more aggressive move set. Badge Points limit how many you can equip, so review the cost of each badge rather than filling every available slot automatically. Nintendo Canada’s tips

Choose one of three level-up resources

Each level-up asks you to increase one of three resources. The best selection depends on what is limiting your current play style, not on a universal build.

Choice What it increases Choose it when
Heart Points Mario’s health You are being knocked out before you can finish encounters or you prefer a larger safety margin.
Flower Points The resource used for powerful moves You rely on special or other Flower Point-consuming attacks and run out of that resource first.
Badge Points The number of badge points available for equipping badges Your preferred badges do not fit together or your strategy depends on a wider set of badge effects.

Reconsider the choice after several battles rather than judging it from one difficult encounter. The three options support different builds, and Nintendo’s beginner guide presents them as a matter of how you want to develop Mario. Nintendo Australia beginner guide

A reliable first-session routine

  1. Follow the opening story route. Speak with characters and investigate side paths instead of rushing directly from one objective marker to the next.
  2. Test the environment. Look for gaps, narrow spaces and paper-shaped routes that may become useful after a transformation.
  3. Use ZL when uncertain. Ask your partner for a hint before abandoning a room; if the solution is not available yet, continue the story and remember the location.
  4. Open the Partner Ring with L. Cycle through available partners whenever a field obstacle or puzzle does not react to your current selection.
  5. In the first unfamiliar battle, inspect the enemy. Bring Goombella into the active party and use Tattle so the enemy’s statistics and weakness are recorded.
  6. Watch the Action Command cue. Press at the indicated moment for attacks and defensive inputs. A successful command improves your attack or reduces damage.
  7. Spend turns deliberately. Choose among an attack, item, partner move and special move according to the target and your resources; do not spend Flower Points simply because a powerful move is available.
  8. Check badges after gaining one. Equip effects that support your current timing skill and battle plan, while keeping enough Badge Points for combinations you actually use.
  9. At a level-up, identify the bottleneck. Select Heart Points if survival is the issue, Flower Points if powerful moves are unavailable often enough, or Badge Points if your build cannot fit its key badges.
  10. Visit the Battle Master when you want practice. Nintendo recommends a Toad called the Battle Master for additional information about battle mechanics. Menu tabs can also be opened with directional-button shortcuts. Nintendo Canada’s tips

Make decisions without a full walkthrough

Use a repeatable exploration test

When a room appears to contain a secret, run the same short check: speak to nearby characters, walk the perimeter, look for a gap or narrow opening, and cycle partners with the Partner Ring. If none of those actions produces a route, leave and continue the story. This keeps you moving without abandoning a location that may require a later paper transformation or partner.

Compare resources by the problem they solve

Heart Points are the direct answer to surviving more mistakes. Flower Points are the answer when your preferred powerful moves are available but cannot be used often enough. Badge Points solve a planning problem: you have useful badges but not enough capacity to equip the combination you want. Review several encounters before changing priorities, because one difficult fight may not represent your usual needs.

Turn partner switching into a battle plan

Before confirming a command, ask two questions: has this enemy been identified, and does the current partner address what the enemy is doing? If the answer to the first question is no, Tattle with Goombella. If the second answer is no, use Y to change the active position or choose another partner on the next turn. This creates a simple loop of information, selection and timing rather than random experimentation.

Practice timing under low pressure

Action Commands affect both offense and defense, so practice both sides whenever a fight is safe enough to observe the prompts. Watch the cue, press at the indicated moment and use the result to judge your timing. Defensive accuracy is especially useful while learning because reducing incoming damage gives you more room to make mistakes on later turns.

What to do when you are stuck

A path or object seems impossible

  • Ask the current partner for a hint with ZL.
  • Try every available partner through the Partner Ring by holding L.
  • Inspect the area for a gap, narrow opening or surface that expects a plane, sideways, tube or boat transformation.
  • Leave the area and advance the story. Return after learning a new ability or meeting someone who can help; this is an intended progression pattern.

You keep losing battles

  • Use Goombella’s Tattle against an enemy you have not identified. Its recorded information remains available when that enemy appears again.
  • Practice the Action Command timing on both offense and defense. Better defense lowers the cost of mistakes while you learn the attack cues.
  • Change the active partner with Y and choose a move that addresses the enemy’s weakness.
  • Review badges and level-up priorities. More Heart Points provide survivability, Flower Points support frequent powerful moves, and Badge Points allow a broader badge setup.
  • Watch the audience for helpful or harmful objects during the battle instead of ignoring the stage.

A control input appears unresponsive

First confirm that the on-screen prompt is being followed and that the correct command is being used for the current mode. Nintendo released a software update on July 9, 2024 that addressed occasional control-response problems after hammering an enemy in the field, along with a rare battle that did not end properly. To update from the HOME Menu, highlight the game, press + or –, choose Software Update, then choose Via the Internet. The console’s update screen is the authority for any version released after that notice. Nintendo Support update notice

Switch edition features worth using

Quick travel and the Partner Ring

The remake’s more accessible quick-travel pipes reduce the friction of revisiting earlier areas, which is useful when a new paper ability or partner makes an old route worthwhile. The Partner Ring similarly turns partner selection into an immediate field action rather than a long menu detour.

Choose the display mode that fits the session

Play on a television, in handheld mode or in tabletop mode. The game is listed for one player on a single system, so partner control and battle decisions are handled by the same player.

Expect a presentation update, not a different battle system

The Switch version refreshes the graphics and soundtrack while retaining the exploration, partner-based puzzles, turn-based commands and Action Command timing that define the adventure. The fundamental skills remain the same: explore carefully, identify weaknesses, time your inputs and spend upgrades on the resource your current strategy lacks.

Controls and decisions at a glance

Situation Input or choice Purpose
Need a field hint ZL Ask the current partner for guidance.
Need information from Goombella X Get information about nearby places and people when she is present.
Change partner outside battle Hold L Open the Partner Ring.
Change the active position in battle Y Swap the active partner position with Mario.
Identify an unfamiliar enemy Choose Tattle with Goombella Reveal current statistics and weaknesses and retain that information for later encounters.
Improve an attack or block damage Follow the on-screen Action Command Time the button input during offense or defense.

Once these decisions become automatic, the game’s apparent complexity becomes a repeatable rhythm: explore until a route or clue appears, select the partner that fits the situation, identify enemy weaknesses, execute the timing prompt and spend badges and level-ups on the resource you actually need.

Buying, updating and checking regional details

Nintendo lists a physical Nintendo Switch edition of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. If you are shopping for the game, search for the full title and check the Nintendo listing or an authorized retailer in your territory. Do not assume that language options, availability or store details are identical across regions.

After installing the game, check for updates from the HOME Menu. Highlight the software, press + or –, select Software Update, and choose Via the Internet. Nintendo’s July 9, 2024 notice specifically mentions occasional control-response issues after hammering an enemy in the field and a rare battle that failed to end. If your console offers a newer version, follow the version information shown there.

How do Action Commands work?

Watch the on-screen timing cue and press the indicated button at the right moment. A successful offensive command improves the attack; a successful defensive command reduces damage when an enemy strikes.

How do I switch partners on the Switch?

Outside battle, hold L to open the Partner Ring and choose a partner. During battle, press Y to swap the active partner position with Mario.

What is the best partner?

There is no universally best choice supported by Nintendo’s guidance. Partners have different field and battle roles, so select the one whose ability fits the obstacle or enemy. Goombella is especially useful for hints and Tattle information.

What do I do if I cannot solve a puzzle?

Press ZL for a partner hint, test the available partners, and inspect gaps, narrow openings and surfaces suited to Mario’s plane, sideways, tube or boat forms. If the route still makes no sense, continue the story and return after gaining a new ability or meeting someone who can help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose Heart Points, Flower Points or Badge Points?

Choose Heart Points for more health, Flower Points if powerful moves are your limiting resource, and Badge Points if you need room for more badge effects. Judge the pattern across several battles instead of one encounter.

Where can I learn more about combat?

Find the Battle Master, a Toad Nintendo recommends for additional information about battle mechanics. Nintendo’s tips also note that menu tabs can be opened with directional-button shortcuts.

Why did a field input fail to respond?

Check that you are following the current on-screen prompt and update the software. Nintendo’s July 9, 2024 update addressed occasional control-response problems after hammering an enemy in the field. Use the HOME Menu update path described above and check the console for later versions.

Can I play in handheld or tabletop mode?

Yes. Nintendo lists TV, handheld and tabletop modes for the Switch version. The game remains a one-player experience in each mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Play Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door as a cycle of exploration, information and timing. Search the paper world for routes, use the transformation or partner that fits the obstacle, Tattle unfamiliar enemies, perform each Action Command and spend level-ups on the resource your current strategy lacks. The Switch edition’s Partner Ring, quick-travel pipes and updated presentation make that cycle easier to manage without changing the fundamentals.
