Choose an app or PlayStation Portal
The PS Remote Play app works with supported PS4 and PS5 consoles. Install it on a compatible phone, tablet, computer, or other supported device, then connect a controller if your device and operating system require one. Supported mobile devices can also use on-screen touch controls.

PlayStation Portal is a dedicated handheld that streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5. It has built-in controls, but it is not a standalone console and does not work with PS4. Check Sony’s Portal compatibility information for current details.

Set up PS Remote Play on a phone or tablet
- Check compatibility. Review Sony’s current PS Remote Play device and controller compatibility list for your phone or tablet, operating system, and controller.
- Prepare your console. Update its system software, connect it to the internet, and have access to the PlayStation account you use on the console.
- Enable Remote Play on PS5. On the console, go to Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Remote Play. To wake the PS5 over the network while it is in Rest Mode, also enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network in the Rest Mode features.
- Enable Remote Play on PS4. Turn on Remote Play in Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings. If you want to start the console remotely, Sony’s setup guide also covers activating it as your account’s primary PS4 and configuring Rest Mode features.
- Install the app and sign in. Get PS Remote Play from the relevant app store, open it, and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console. Follow the app’s connection prompts. Sony’s mobile setup guide has the full device-specific instructions.
- Connect controls if needed. Pair a supported DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller where compatible. On supported phones and tablets, you can instead use touch controls. Controller support varies by device and operating-system version, so check Sony’s compatibility list for your exact combination.
Set up PlayStation Portal
Portal streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5. Follow the on-screen setup to connect the device to your PlayStation account and PS5, then select a compatible game. Sony’s U.S. product information says supported Portal software can connect to a range of public Wi-Fi networks, although some require extra validation; initial setup at home and a phone or tablet for those steps may be needed. Public Wi-Fi support and setup details can vary by region and software version, so check the current local Portal information before relying on a particular network.
Check your connection before you play
Sony says broadband internet of at least 5 Mbps is required for Remote Play and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience, over Wi-Fi or mobile data. Those are Sony’s service recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular picture quality, frame rate, or input response. Performance varies with the game and network environment. A weak or inconsistent connection can disrupt play even when a speed test reaches the recommended number.

If you connect over mobile data, Remote Play uses your plan’s data allowance, and your carrier may charge for exceeding it. The amount of data and any extra charges depend on your usage and plan; check with your provider if you are unsure.

- Remote Play supports PS4 and PS5, but individual device and controller combinations depend on operating system and version.
- Sony says games requiring a VR headset, titles needing peripherals beyond supported controllers, and games that must be streamed through PS Plus Premium are incompatible with PS Remote Play.
- Portal is for compatible games installed on PS5; it does not support PS4.
