Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The simplest reliable method is PlayStation Remote Play: your PS4 or PS5 runs the game, then streams its video and audio to the handheld. The ROG Ally and Ally X can use Sony’s official Windows PS Remote Play app. The Steam Deck normally uses the unofficial chiaki-ng client on SteamOS.
This does not install PS4 or PS5 games on the handheld, and it does not turn either device into a general PlayStation emulator. A console, PlayStation Network account and suitable network connection are normally required.

What you need
- A PS4 or PS5 with Remote Play enabled.
- A PlayStation Network account used on both the console and handheld client.
- The games installed on, or otherwise available through, the console.
- A ROG Ally or Ally X running Windows, or a Steam Deck running SteamOS.
- Reliable Wi-Fi, preferably 5 GHz for the handheld.
- Ethernet for the console where practical.
- Current console firmware and handheld software.
- Optionally, a DualSense or DualShock 4 for PlayStation-specific controls.
PlayStation Plus is not required for ordinary Remote Play. Sony describes Remote Play as a connection to your own PS4 or PS5; PlayStation Plus cloud streaming is a separate service with different availability and requirements. See Sony’s official Remote Play instructions.

How to play PlayStation games on a ROG Ally
Install Sony’s Windows client
- Download the Windows version of PS Remote Play from Sony.
- Install the application.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation Network account used on the console.
- Select the PS4 or PS5 when it is discovered.
- Start Remote Play and test the controls before launching a game.
The Ally’s built-in controls are exposed to Windows through Armoury Crate SE. If the app does not respond correctly, open Armoury Crate SE and check that the handheld is in Gamepad Mode, not Desktop or Mouse mode. Launching the app through Armoury Crate may also help.
Connect a DualSense or DualShock 4 as a diagnostic step. If the external controller works but the Ally controls do not, the issue is probably the Windows control layer rather than the console connection. Behaviour can vary by Ally model, Windows update and Armoury Crate version, so there is no universal Armoury Crate fix.
If Sony’s app remains awkward with the built-in controls, chiaki-ng also has a Windows version and may be worth trying, but it is not Sony’s official client.

How to play PlayStation games on a Steam Deck
Install chiaki-ng
SteamOS does not have an official Sony PS Remote Play application. The practical route is chiaki-ng, the actively maintained successor to the older Chiaki project. Its release page contains current versions and packaging information; check it rather than relying on an old Chiaki4Deck tutorial.
- Switch the Steam Deck to Desktop Mode.
- Open Discover.
- Search for chiaki-ng and install the available Flatpak package associated with the project.
- Launch chiaki-ng.
- Use the console’s current Remote Play or device-registration menu to generate a registration PIN.
- In chiaki-ng, choose the option to register a new PS4 or PS5.
- Enter the requested account identifier and registration PIN.
- Select the discovered console and connect.
The exact registration labels and PIN location can change, so follow the project’s current documentation if they differ from these general steps.

Use chiaki-ng’s built-in Create Steam shortcut option when available. The project documents this as the preferred way to add the client and apply an appropriate Steam Deck controller profile.
If you need to add it manually:
- Remain in Desktop Mode and open Steam.
- Choose Add a Game, then Add a Non-Steam Game.
- Add chiaki-ng.
- Open the shortcut’s controller settings and choose a layout with PS button, touchpad click, Share, Options and microphone controls.
- Return to Gaming Mode and launch chiaki-ng from the library.
See the project’s controller documentation for current layouts, touchscreen support and advanced controller behaviour.

Steam Deck
Start with chiaki-ng’s default Steam Deck profile. Test the PS button, touchpad click, Options, Share and microphone controls before opening a game. If the touchscreen behaves like a mouse, enable the project’s touchscreen-native support in the Steam controller layout.

ROG Ally
- Use Gamepad Mode in Armoury Crate SE.
- Try launching the Remote Play app through Armoury Crate.
- Connect a DualSense or DualShock 4 over USB or Bluetooth if a PlayStation-specific input is missing.
- Use chiaki-ng for Windows if Sony’s app continues to mishandle the built-in controls.
Third-party remapping can restore missing buttons, but it can also create conflicts with Armoury Crate, Steam Input or the Remote Play client. Treat it as a troubleshooting option, not a requirement.
Improve image quality and reduce lag
For the best starting configuration:
- Connect the PS4 or PS5 to the router by Ethernet.
- Connect the handheld to the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Avoid guest networks with client isolation.
- Stop large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity.
- Start with the client’s current default settings.
- If the stream stutters, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate one setting at a time.
Client settings may include resolution, frame rate, bitrate, hardware decoding, HDR or colour options, audio output and controller mode. There is no universally correct bitrate: your router, distance, interference and internet connection matter more than an old tutorial’s recommended number. chiaki-ng’s defaults can change between releases, so tune from the current default rather than copying a fixed value. Sony also provides Remote Play streaming-quality guidance.
Local Remote Play versus playing away from home
Test locally first
Put the console and handheld on the same home network. Keep the console wired if possible and use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the handheld. A successful local connection proves that the client, account and basic console configuration work before you introduce internet routing problems.
If discovery fails, check that:
- Both devices are on the same LAN.
- Neither device is connected to an isolated guest network.
- The console is awake.
- Router client isolation is disabled.
- The client and console have both been restarted.
If supported by your client, try adding the console by its local IP address.

- 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
Playing outside the home
Remote Play away from home is more sensitive to NAT, firewall rules, carrier-grade NAT, hotel Wi-Fi and upload speed. A setup that works locally may still fail remotely.
- Confirm local Remote Play works.
- Confirm the console can be awakened from Rest Mode.
- Test from a second home network or phone hotspot.
- Check whether the outside network blocks required traffic.
- Compare with Sony’s official client on a Windows device where possible.
Do not begin by randomly forwarding ports. Router configurations vary, and unnecessary port forwarding can create security and reliability problems. User reports in the chiaki-ng issue tracker and related issue show that third-party remote connections can fail even when Sony’s official mobile app works; these reports are possible failure modes, not proof of a universal problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Games and features that may not work
Remote Play supports many games, but not every game or peripheral feature. Sony specifically identifies games requiring PS VR, PS VR2 or PlayStation Camera as examples that are incompatible with ordinary Remote Play.
Specialised features may also require additional setup:
- Touchpad input and click.
- Motion or gyro controls.
- Microphone input.
- Haptics and adaptive triggers.
- Games designed for specialist hardware.
Remote Play also cannot necessarily be used at the same time as PlayStation Plus cloud streaming on the same console or account session. Check Sony’s current restrictions before assuming the two services can be combined.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Can you play PlayStation games without a PS4 or PS5?
Not through ordinary Remote Play. Remote Play streams a game from your own console, so a PS4 or PS5 is normally required. The Ally and Steam Deck are not general PS5 game-download platforms, and PS4 or PS5 games do not become native Windows or SteamOS games simply because the handheld is powerful.
PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming is a separate service streamed from Sony’s servers. Availability depends on country, account, subscription tier and catalogue. Sony’s current documentation and announcements focus on supported PlayStation Portal use; do not assume that the Portal cloud-streaming experience is officially available in the same way on Steam Deck or ROG Ally.
If you do not own a console, consider:
- A native PC version purchased through Steam or another PC storefront.
- Streaming PC games from a computer with Steam Remote Play.
- A PlayStation Portal for Sony’s supported Remote Play and cloud-streaming experience, subject to region and catalogue restrictions.
- Buying a PS4 or PS5 for access to your existing console library.
Native emulation of modern PlayStation systems is not a straightforward alternative setup. It involves separate technical, firmware and game-dump issues and is outside the scope of this guide.
Troubleshooting checklist
The console is not found
- Verify Remote Play is enabled.
- Wake the console manually.
- Confirm both devices are on the same non-guest network.
- Restart the console and client.
- Try manual local-IP entry if supported.
- Check router isolation and firewall settings.
The registration PIN fails
- Generate a fresh PIN.
- Confirm the client uses the same PSN account as the console.
- Check that Remote Play is enabled and the console is awake.
- Remove an old device registration if a device limit has been reached.
- Follow the client’s current registration instructions rather than an old video or guide.
Video stutters or freezes
- Move the handheld closer to the router.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Connect the console by Ethernet.
- Lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate.
- Stop other downloads.
- Test locally before troubleshooting remote access.
Input does not work
- On Ally, switch Armoury Crate to Gamepad Mode.
- On Deck, launch the client through its Steam shortcut.
- Apply chiaki-ng’s default controller layout.
- Check whether Steam Input is intercepting a DualSense.
- Test a physical DualSense or DualShock 4.
- Map touchpad click and the PS button separately.
It works at home but not away
- Confirm Rest Mode networking.
- Test another external network.
- Check NAT and firewall behaviour.
- Compare chiaki-ng with Sony’s official client on Windows.
- Do not assume port forwarding will solve the problem.
A reported chiaki-ng issue also describes interaction with Steam Remote Play after another streaming client is launched. If that happens, restart both the client and Steam; treat the report as a possible compatibility issue rather than a universal bug.
Which handheld is better for PlayStation Remote Play?
The ROG Ally is the simpler official route because it runs Windows and can install Sony’s PS Remote Play client directly. The Steam Deck is a practical and well-integrated option once chiaki-ng is installed and its Steam controller shortcut is configured, but it relies on an unofficial client.
Neither handheld natively installs PS5 games through this setup. For streaming quality, the console’s network connection, the handheld’s Wi-Fi and controller mapping matter more than extra handheld performance.
