Nintendo Switch hardware is made in multiple countries, not just Japan or China. Nintendo says its production partners manufacture hardware in China, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Hardware supplied to North America is mainly produced in Vietnam, although “mainly” does not mean every unit is made there.

Nintendo is headquartered in Kyoto and designs and oversees its products there, but it uses a fabless manufacturing model: external production partners assemble its hardware. The most reliable answer for your individual console is the “Made in…” or “Manufactured in…” marking on the console or its packaging.

Which countries make Nintendo Switch consoles?

Country What the available evidence shows
China Some Switch hardware, including documented original Switch production, is made in China.
Vietnam A major current production location. Nintendo says hardware for North America is mainly produced there.
Cambodia Nintendo named Cambodia as another country where its hardware is produced.
Japan Nintendo’s headquarters, design, management, and product-oversight base—not established by the available sources as the primary assembly location for current Switch consoles.

Nintendo’s manufacturing explanation says the company does not own the facilities that manufacture its main products. Instead, it works with production partners around the world and sets manufacturing, inspection, and validation requirements.

Is the Nintendo Switch made in Japan?

Not generally in the sense most buyers mean. Nintendo is a Japanese company headquartered in Kyoto, but a Japanese brand origin is different from a console’s manufacturing origin.

  • microSD Card Case 2pcs, each holds 2 microSD Cards
  • Comfortable carrying handle and soft cleaning cloth
  • Brand and design origin: Nintendo is based in Japan and develops and oversees its products there.
  • Manufacturing origin: Production partners in several countries assemble Nintendo hardware.
  • Country-of-origin label: The marking on your specific console or box identifies the relevant unit more reliably than Nintendo’s nationality.

Where is each Nintendo Switch model made?

Standard Nintendo Switch

The standard Switch is commonly identified as HAC-001. The revised longer-battery-life version is HAC-001(-01). Production country can vary by revision, batch, and market.

A 2019 FCC report for the revised HAC-001(-01) identified China as the country of mass production for the tested unit. That is useful model-specific evidence, but it does not prove that every standard Switch—or every Switch sold today—was made in China.

Nintendo Switch Lite

Switch Lite uses model identifier HDH-001. It belongs to Nintendo’s broader multi-country manufacturing system, but there is no single publicly established country that applies to every Switch Lite unit. Check the marking on the individual console or its packaging.

Nintendo Switch OLED Model

The OLED model is identified as HEG-001. Its manufacturing country can also vary by production batch and sales market. Nintendo’s public statements do not provide a complete country-by-model list for all OLED units.

Nintendo Switch 2

Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, according to Nintendo’s official release. Its model identifier is BEE-001.

Nintendo has not published a definitive country-of-origin breakdown for every Switch 2 unit. Because Nintendo says North American hardware is mainly produced in Vietnam, many Switch 2 systems supplied to North America are expected to come from Vietnam. That is an inference from Nintendo’s regional production statement, not a universal Switch 2 manufacturing specification; Nintendo also identifies China and Cambodia as hardware-production countries.

How to check where your own Switch was made

  1. Inspect the back of the console. Look for a small country-of-origin marking among the regulatory text and other product information.
  2. Check the retail box. The country statement may be easier to read on the packaging.
  3. Check accessories separately. The dock, Joy-Con controllers, AC adapter, and cable may carry different country-of-origin markings.
  4. Record the model number. Common identifiers include HAC-001 for the standard Switch, HDH-001 for Switch Lite, HEG-001 for the OLED model, and BEE-001 for Switch 2. These identifiers are listed in iFixit’s device reference.
  5. Do not rely on the serial number alone. A serial number may relate to a production batch or region, but it is not a substitute for a printed country-of-origin marking unless Nintendo provides an official decoder for that exact product and market.

Why the country can differ between otherwise similar consoles

Manufacturing locations can change as Nintendo allocates production between partners and regions. As a result:

  • The same retail model can have different country markings.
  • North American, European, Japanese, and other regional supplies may come from different production lines.
  • A console bought in 2026 may have been manufactured earlier.
  • A refurbished console or one repaired with replacement parts may not reflect the origin of every current component.
  • The console, dock, charger, cable, and Joy-Con controllers may have different markings.

Nintendo’s UK support information also says the original Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED Model would continue to be manufactured during 2026. That means production and availability can continue to vary by region and stock cycle.

Are all Switch components made in the same country?

No. A console’s country-of-origin label generally concerns the applicable finished product or final manufacturing process, not every material and component inside it.

A Switch may include a main board, processor, memory, display, battery, plastics, and other parts sourced through different suppliers and countries. The same applies to chargers, cables, docks, and controllers. Nintendo’s public production statements identify hardware-production countries, but they do not publish a complete country-of-origin list for every component.

Does the manufacturing country affect quality?

There is no reliable basis for ranking Switch quality by country of manufacture. Nintendo says its manufacturing division establishes assembly and validation specifications, conducts inspections before shipment, and maintains production traceability systems.

A “Made in Vietnam,” “Made in China,” or “Made in Cambodia” marking is therefore not, by itself, evidence that one unit is better or worse than another. Condition, age, storage, warranty status, and the specific hardware revision are more useful factors when evaluating a used or refurbished console.

Does it affect compatibility or warranty?

The manufacturing country alone does not determine compatibility. Check the following instead:

  • Sales region and model version: Regional software, account, and service rules can differ.
  • AC adapter: The included charger must match the electrical system and plug requirements where you use it.
  • Wireless certifications: Regional hardware versions may have market-specific regulatory approvals.
  • Warranty and support: Coverage is usually tied to the sales region, retailer, and applicable service policy—not simply the factory country.

For Switch 2, Nintendo says systems sold outside Japan use the same multilingual system and include the appropriate regional AC adapter. That describes the sales package and region, not a single assembly country.

What to prioritize when verifying a unit

For an individual console, use evidence in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The printed country-of-origin marking on the console.
  2. The marking on the original retail packaging.
  3. An official regulatory filing for the exact model and revision.
  4. Nintendo’s broad manufacturing statements.
  5. Retailer listings, teardown reports, or user photographs.

This is why a general statement such as “North American Switch hardware is mainly made in Vietnam” is useful context, while the label on your own console is stronger evidence about that particular unit.
