There is no Nintendo DS game officially titled Pokémon Heart & Soul; the games people usually mean are Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version. To play either on a PC, install a Nintendo DS emulator such as melonDS or DeSmuME, configure the emulator’s firmware or BIOS as its documentation requires, and open a game file you are legally entitled to use. You will need to map both button and touchscreen controls, and you should not expect the original Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection or every DS accessory to work.

What you need before starting

HeartGold and SoulSilver are Nintendo DS games. The Pokémon Company describes both editions as supporting the DS’s physical buttons and touchscreen, including touchscreen access to the Pokédex, Bag and PC Boxes. A PC cannot run the cartridge directly, so the software layer is a Nintendo DS emulator.

  • A Windows, macOS or Linux computer for melonDS, or a computer supported by the current DeSmuME build.
  • A current build downloaded from the emulator project’s own official site.
  • A game file that you are lawfully entitled to use.
  • A keyboard, gamepad or mouse/stylus arrangement for both DS screens and input types.
  • Enough storage for the emulator, its configuration files and save backups.

No source establishes a particular processor, graphics card, frame rate or controller as a guaranteed match for these games. Emulator versions and operating systems change, so treat the projects’ current setup notes as the authority for your machine rather than assuming that a configuration tested by someone else will behave identically.

Choose a Nintendo DS emulator

melonDS and DeSmuME are documented desktop choices. Neither should be presented as universally “better” for HeartGold or SoulSilver: the available documentation does not provide a reproducible, current head-to-head compatibility test for these games.

Question melonDS DeSmuME
Desktop platforms The project targets Windows, macOS and Linux. Use the operating-system builds listed in the current DeSmuME download and documentation pages.
Firmware and BIOS Its FAQ discusses DS BIOS/firmware configuration and a direct-boot setting. Follow that FAQ for the version you install. Its FAQ says the emulator has internal BIOS/firmware that can load and execute ROMs; external system images add features and are configured separately.
Opening a game The project documents File > Open ROM. Use the current menu and documentation for loading a ROM; labels can differ by release.
Input and touchscreen Configure keyboard or controller input in the emulator settings, then assign a mouse or another control to the touch screen. Configure button and touch input in its current control settings; do not assume melonDS mappings transfer.
Save handling Save paths and file names depend on the build and operating system. Save paths and file names depend on the build and operating system.
Best reason to pick it A documented cross-platform project with a clearly described ROM-opening workflow. A long-established NDS emulator whose documentation explains both internal and optional external BIOS behavior.

Install one emulator first. Running two at once can make it unclear which configuration or save file you are using, especially if both are pointed at the same game directory.

Game files and the legal boundary

An emulator and a game file are separate things. Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ describes unauthorized game copies as pirate copies and states: “The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.” Do not use this guide to find a ROM repository, and do not assume that owning a HeartGold or SoulSilver cartridge automatically grants permission to download a copy from the internet.

The cited Nintendo statement is Nintendo’s policy, not a complete legal analysis for every country. Rules about personal backups, cartridge dumping and format shifting differ by jurisdiction, and the available evidence does not establish a universal rule that cartridge ownership permits downloading a ROM. If you create or use a personal backup, verify the law where you live and keep the file private. This article does not provide instructions for bypassing copy protection or obtaining an unauthorized download.

Set up melonDS

The exact names and locations of settings can change between releases. Use this sequence as a practical order of operations while checking the current melonDS FAQ when a screen differs.

  1. Install the current desktop build. Download melonDS from its official project channel, install or extract it according to the package instructions, and launch it once so it can create its configuration folders.
  2. Read the BIOS and firmware requirements. melonDS documentation discusses the Nintendo DS BIOS and firmware files and a direct-boot option. Open the emulator’s configuration or setup page and follow the current instructions for your build. Do not substitute files or paths from a DeSmuME tutorial; the requirements are not interchangeable.
  3. Set the screen layout. Choose a vertical or side-by-side arrangement that leaves the lower touch screen large enough to use. A larger window or integer scaling can make small interface buttons easier to hit, but the best size depends on your monitor.
  4. Map physical controls. Assign Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start, Select and any emulator hotkeys to a keyboard or controller. Keep a distinct key for opening the emulator menu so you can pause without accidentally pressing a game button.
  5. Configure touch input. Select the lower screen as the touch target and assign mouse clicks, a trackpad or a controller stick. HeartGold and SoulSilver use the touch screen for menus and some in-game actions, so a button-only layout is inconvenient even when most movement uses the D-pad.
  6. Open your lawful game file. Choose File > Open ROM, select the file, and wait for the two DS screens to appear. If melonDS reports a missing BIOS or firmware component, return to step 2 rather than downloading a random replacement.
  7. Test before beginning a long session. Move the character, open the Bag, tap a menu item on the lower screen, and enter and leave a building. These checks confirm that both button and touch mappings work before you rely on the setup.
  8. Make a save and identify its location. Save through the game’s own menu, close the emulator normally, and locate the resulting save file using melonDS’s documentation. Copy that file to a separate backup folder before changing emulator versions.

Set up DeSmuME

  1. Install the current DeSmuME release for your operating system. Use the project’s current download and documentation pages; older FAQ sections may describe interfaces that are no longer identical.
  2. Decide whether the internal BIOS is sufficient. DeSmuME documentation says its internal BIOS/firmware can load and execute ROMs. External BIOS or firmware images are optional for added features, not automatically required for every launch. Follow the version-specific instructions if you choose to configure external images.
  3. Load the game file from the emulator’s ROM command. Select the lawful file through the current File menu. If the emulator opens to a blank screen, check the selected file, firmware settings and the project’s troubleshooting notes before changing unrelated graphics options.
  4. Configure controls for both screens. Map the DS buttons to a keyboard or controller and enable mouse or equivalent touch input for the lower display. Verify that a click registers in a menu, not merely on the emulator’s window frame.
  5. Save, close and back up. Use the in-game save command, exit DeSmuME through its normal close procedure, then find the save directory described by your release. Keep dated copies elsewhere so an experiment with settings cannot destroy your only progress.

DeSmuME’s internal BIOS behavior and melonDS’s firmware/direct-boot choices solve the same basic startup problem in different ways. Copying a configuration from one emulator to the other can produce a boot error, a missing save or an apparently frozen screen.

Configure controls that feel natural on a PC

Keyboard layout

A practical starting point is arrow keys for the D-pad, nearby keys for A and B, and separate keys for X, Y, L, R, Start and Select. Keep the two most frequently used face buttons next to one another so menu navigation does not require reaching across the keyboard. Every hand position is different; the important test is whether you can hold a direction while pressing a face button without losing control.

Gamepad layout

Map the D-pad to movement and the face buttons to A, B, X and Y. Put L and R on shoulder buttons, with Start and Select in their usual central positions. Disable or remap emulator hotkeys that conflict with screenshots, fast-forward or pausing. Fast-forward can be useful for waiting, but leave it off while testing timing-sensitive input.

Touchscreen use

Use the mouse for direct taps, or map a controller stick to a virtual stylus if your emulator supports it. Increase the lower-screen scale if icons are difficult to select. Test taps at the edges as well as the center: a window that is being resized or stretched can offset the apparent cursor position.

Saving and protecting progress

Use the game’s normal save command as your primary save method. Emulator state snapshots can be convenient for recovering from a difficult battle, but they are not a substitute for the game’s save file: state formats can change between emulator versions and may preserve a temporary fault. Keep the in-game save and any state files in separate backup folders.

  • Save in the game, then wait for the confirmation before closing the emulator.
  • Close the emulator normally instead of killing the process during a write.
  • Back up the save file before updating the emulator or moving the game to another computer.
  • Do not let two emulator instances write to the same save at the same time.
  • If a save disappears, check the emulator’s configured save directory and whether the game file was moved or renamed; paths vary by version.

Troubleshooting common startup problems

The emulator says BIOS or firmware is missing

Check the emulator’s own BIOS/firmware page and confirm that the configured path points to the files expected by that release. melonDS and DeSmuME do not use identical setup models: melonDS documentation discusses BIOS/firmware and direct boot, while DeSmuME can use internal BIOS/firmware and treats external images as an optional feature path. Do not download unverified system files from a ROM site.

The game opens but the lower screen cannot be tapped

Open input settings, select the lower screen as the touch target and reassign the mouse or stylus control. Make sure the emulator window has focus. Test in a menu, then save and restart to confirm the mapping persists.

Buttons work, but movement is erratic

Remove duplicate keyboard assignments, check for a controller profile that is also active, and make sure an analog stick is not drifting. Rebind one control at a time and test in a safe in-game area before changing video settings.

The game is too fast or audio is unstable

Return speed controls to the emulator’s normal 100-percent or equivalent setting and disable fast-forward. Then consult the current project documentation for audio synchronization and frame-skip options. The available sources do not provide a tested performance preset for a particular PC, so avoid treating someone else’s values as universal.

A save is missing after changing emulators

Confirm that the second emulator supports the same save format, that it is opening the same game file, and that its save directory contains the expected file. Make a backup before attempting any conversion. If the project documents a conversion procedure, follow that procedure exactly; do not rename files at random.

The emulator crashes or shows a blank screen

Restart with default graphics and audio settings, verify the game file is readable, and check the project’s current issue tracker or FAQ for your operating system and release. Record the emulator version, operating system, exact symptom and whether the game ever reached the title screen before seeking support.

What works differently from an original Nintendo DS

Online services

Nintendo UK states that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection services for DS and DSi software ended on May 20, 2014. That discontinuation covered online play, matchmaking, competitions and leaderboards. Do not expect official online trading, battles or leaderboards to function simply because the emulator displays the game’s network menus.

Pokéwalker

The official HeartGold instruction booklet says, “The Pokéwalker can only connect to Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver Versions.” The reviewed emulator documentation does not establish that a PC emulator reproduces this accessory connection. Plan on the Pokéwalker being unavailable unless your specific emulator and hardware setup has current, documented support; this article makes no compatibility promise.

Dual Slot and other hardware links

The manual says the Dual Slot function is available only on Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite hardware. A PC emulator is not that hardware, and the available documentation does not establish equivalent support. Features that depend on infrared, cartridge contacts or communication with another physical game should therefore be treated as unsupported unless the emulator project explicitly documents otherwise.

HeartGold versus SoulSilver on PC

The story is the same in both editions, but the Pokémon available and their encounter rates differ. The manual also describes edition-specific Pokémon availability and communication with other games. Choose the game file for the version whose encounters and exclusives you want; changing emulator settings will not turn one edition into the other.

Release context and expectations

Nintendo lists SoulSilver as a Nintendo DS release dated March 26, 2010, and the Pokémon Company identifies both editions as Nintendo DS and DSi titles. Their two-screen interface, touch controls and hardware communication were designed for that period’s handheld. An emulator can reproduce the game software on a modern desktop, but it cannot automatically recreate every physical accessory or discontinued network service.

For the most reliable experience, keep the emulator, operating system and controller drivers current, change one setting at a time, and preserve a clean backup of your in-game save. If a feature matters to you—online trading, Pokéwalker routes or Dual Slot communication—verify explicit support in the emulator’s current documentation before committing your playthrough to a PC-only setup.
