One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf Pokémon HeartGold or SoulSilver will not start, first separate the symptom: the Nintendo DS-family system may not recognize the game card, may show a blank screen, may freeze after launch, or may fail only when loading a save. Those are different diagnostic paths. Reseat the card until it clicks, confirm the system has power, test other games, and—if possible—test the same card in another compatible DS-family system. If the failure follows the card, Nintendo’s troubleshooting treats the card as the likely source; if the card works elsewhere, the original console is more suspect. Neither result identifies the exact failed component.
HeartGold and SoulSilver are Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi titles. The official launch sequence is to insert the card in the rear slot, pass the Health and Safety screen, and select the game panel from the DS menu (or let Auto Mode start it). The checks below apply to original DS-family hardware; the cited Nintendo guidance does not establish fixes for emulators, ROM images, or modified systems.

Identify exactly what “won’t launch” means
Do not treat every failed start as the same fault. Watch what happens from power-on and record the point at which progress stops.
The game card is absent from the menu
The system starts normally, but no HeartGold or SoulSilver panel appears on the Nintendo DS menu. This is a card-recognition problem. Begin with insertion and comparison tests rather than black-screen remedies.

- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
The system reaches a blank or black display
A blank display can occur while the console itself is powering on. Confirm that the battery is charged and that the system remains powered. Nintendo’s DSi black-screen guidance distinguishes a problem affecting every game from one affecting only the particular card.
The title appears but freezes
If the game panel is visible and the system locks during startup or later play, note whether the freeze occurs before the title screen, during a particular operation, or only while loading an existing save. A freeze that follows the card to another system points toward the card, but it does not prove whether the problem is the card’s contacts, memory, or another internal fault.
Only an existing save fails to load
A launch that reaches the game but fails at one save is not the same as a card that the console cannot read. Preserve the card and avoid experiments that could overwrite the save. The official material here does not provide a save-repair procedure, so use Nintendo Support for a technical assessment.
Use the correct official launch sequence
For the original hardware procedure, Nintendo of America’s Pokémon HeartGold Version instruction booklet says: “Insert the Pokémon HeartGold Version Game Card into the Game Card slot on the back of the system and push until it clicks into place.” After the Health and Safety screen, the booklet says: “Touch the Pokémon HeartGold Version panel on the Nintendo DS Menu Screen to start the game.” SoulSilver uses the same DS-family card-and-menu process.

- Power on the system and wait for the Health and Safety screen.
- On the DS menu, select the HeartGold or SoulSilver panel. On a system configured for Auto Mode, the game starts after the Health and Safety screen.
If the panel never appears, stop repeating the menu step and move to card-recognition checks. If the panel appears but the display goes blank or the game freezes, follow the display and cross-test branches below.
First checks: seating and power
Reseat the card once, firmly
Power the system off, remove the card, and insert it again until it clicks. A card that is not fully seated may not be recognized even when the console menu works normally. This is the basic check in Nintendo’s DS recognition guidance and the first step worth repeating before drawing conclusions about hardware.
Confirm the console has charge
For a blank display, charge the battery and verify that the console powers on reliably. A low or failing battery can make a launch appear to be a game fault. If the system cannot stay on with a charged battery, treat that as a console-power issue rather than evidence that HeartGold or SoulSilver is defective.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not introduce unsupported fixes
The cited official sources do not establish a cartridge-cleaning recipe, a way to open the card, a save-repair method, an emulator setting, or a ROM-image fix. Avoid scraping contacts, applying liquids, opening the cartridge, or changing unrelated system settings when you are trying to preserve a physical game and its save.
Compare the problem with other game cards
The most useful next question is whether the same console can read another known-good game card.
| What you observe on the same console | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Several other cards are also absent or fail to start | The console, its slot, or a system-wide condition is more suspect than one Pokémon card. | Continue with console-focused support and, if possible, cross-test a known-good Pokémon card or the problem card in another compatible system. |
| Other cards work, but HeartGold or SoulSilver does not | The fault is more isolated to this card, its compatibility, or this particular title. | Test the Pokémon card in a second compatible DS-family system. |
| Other games launch, but all show a blank display at the same point | The display or console startup path may be involved. | Use Nintendo’s blank-screen guidance and current regional support options. |
| The game is recognized, then freezes while loading | Recognition succeeded; the failure may be specific to the card or save state. | Cross-test the same card without altering the save. |
Nintendo’s 3DS read-issue workflow likewise separates problems affecting multiple games from a problem affecting one game. That distinction is more informative than repeatedly reinserting the same card without comparison.
Cross-test the Pokémon card in another system
If you can borrow a compatible, working Nintendo DS-family system, run the same physical card through a controlled comparison. Keep the card, not just the console, constant.

- Insert HeartGold or SoulSilver fully and check whether the title appears on that system’s menu.
- Attempt the same basic launch sequence. Record whether it reaches the title screen, shows the same blank display, or freezes at the same stage.
- Compare the result with a known-working game card in the original console, if one is available.
| Problem card in original console | Same card in second system | Most useful interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Fails | Fails | The failure follows the card. Nintendo’s DSi guidance says the game card is likely the problem, although the exact physical defect is not established. |
| Fails | Works | The original console, slot, or its compatibility condition is more likely involved. |
| Works | Fails | Recheck the second system’s compatibility, region, and insertion. A single inconsistent test is not enough to diagnose a component. |
| Works | Works | The intermittent failure may depend on seating, power, or a specific save/loading condition; document when it occurs before seeking support. |
Nintendo presents this comparison as a way to separate card trouble from DSi trouble, not as a guarantee of a precise repair diagnosis. If the card works in another system, do not assume the card is permanently healthy; the original console still needs investigation.

Check console and game compatibility
Know which hardware is involved
HeartGold and SoulSilver are listed as Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games. A DS, DS Lite, DSi, or DSi XL is the natural reference hardware; a compatible Nintendo 3DS-family system can also be relevant to a read-issue check. Identify the exact model before applying advice intended for a different menu or support page.
Verify the game’s intended region on a 3DS
Nintendo’s 3DS read-issue workflow asks users to verify the game’s intended region. If you are using a 3DS-family system and the card came from another market, check the console and game-region details before declaring the card dead. Record the region printed on the game packaging or card and the region associated with the console. Do not generalize a result from one regional combination to every DS-family system.
Separate region questions from card recognition
A card that is physically absent from the menu is not automatically a region problem. First determine whether the console recognizes the card at all, then use the appropriate region check for the hardware involved. This prevents a menu-reading fault from being misdiagnosed as a software incompatibility.

If multiple cards fail in one console
Focus on the console. Note the model, whether the battery holds charge, whether the menu starts normally, and which cards were tested. Nintendo’s legacy DS recognition guidance says that, in the US guidance consulted, service requests for the original DS are no longer offered. The DSi freeze guidance likewise states that DSi service requests are no longer offered. Those statements are not a worldwide or permanent promise about every model and country, so check current Nintendo Support for your region before assuming service is unavailable.

If only HeartGold or SoulSilver fails and it fails in another system
Treat the card as the likely source and preserve it. Nintendo’s cited DSi troubleshooting uses this outcome to identify the game card as likely at fault. It does not establish a repair procedure or a failure rate, and no official statistic for HeartGold/SoulSilver launch failures or cartridge failure rates is established here.
If the card works elsewhere
The first console is the stronger lead. Provide Nintendo Support with the console model, the games that do and do not work, the exact screen or freeze point, and the result of the second-system test. Pokémon Support directs technical questions about games on Nintendo consoles and Nintendo hardware to Nintendo Support.
If the symptom is a blank screen across games
Confirm charge and test a particular game in a different DS-family system when possible. Nintendo UK’s DSi black-screen guidance distinguishes a failure across all games from one tied to a single game. Service instructions vary by country; use the current local Nintendo support route rather than relying on an old regional page.

When a replacement card is reasonable
Replacement is a conditional option, not the first fix for every launch failure. Consider it only after the card has failed in more than one compatible system or another test strongly indicates that the fault follows the card.
- Check the seller’s credibility and return policy.
- Confirm that the listing is for a physical Pokémon HeartGold or SoulSilver Nintendo DS game card, not an account, download code, reproduction, or unrelated accessory.
- Ask for clear photos and verify that the region and labeling match the system you intend to use.
- Be cautious with unusually cheap listings and claims that cannot be verified; authenticity matters for both reliable reading and save preservation.
- Keep the original card and its save until the replacement has been tested. A replacement does not recover data from a failed original card.
Nintendo’s product information establishes the titles as physical DS/DSi games, while its troubleshooting makes replacement relevant only when the card itself is the likely problem. It does not recommend buying a new card before the console-versus-card comparison.
What not to conclude from one test
- A card that fails once is not automatically permanently dead; reseating, power, and an inconsistent slot can affect a single attempt.
- A card that works in another console does not prove that the first console has one specific broken component.
- A black screen does not mean the game card is unreadable unless the card-recognition and other-game checks support that conclusion.
- A title that appears on the menu has been recognized; a later freeze requires a different investigation from an absent panel.
- One successful launch does not prove that an existing save is healthy or that an intermittent fault is resolved.
Prepare useful details for Nintendo Support
Support can isolate the problem faster when the report includes observations rather than a general statement that “the game will not play.” Write down:
- Whether the hardware is a DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, or 3DS-family model.
- Whether the system powers on and whether its battery is charged.
- Whether HeartGold or SoulSilver appears on the menu.
- The exact point of failure: no recognition, blank display, freeze before the title screen, freeze later, or save-loading failure.
- Whether other game cards work in that console.
- Whether the same Pokémon card works in a second compatible system.
- The console and game regions when a 3DS-family system is involved.
- Whether the behavior is constant or intermittent and whether it changes after a full power cycle.
Use Nintendo Support for hardware and Nintendo-console technical questions, as Pokémon Support directs. Include your country because service availability and instructions are regional, particularly for legacy DS and DSi hardware.
Quick Recap
A compact decision path
- Identify the symptom. Decide whether the card is not recognized, the display is blank, the game freezes, or only a save fails.
- Reseat and power-check. Insert the card until it clicks and confirm the system is charged and able to power on.
- Compare games. Test another known-good card in the same console.
- Cross-test the Pokémon card. Use another compatible DS-family system if available.
- Check region on 3DS hardware. Verify the game’s intended region when that platform is part of the test.
- Route the result. Console-wide failures go to console support; a card failure that follows the card makes the card the likely source; an otherwise working card points back to the original console.
- Consider replacement only last. Verify authenticity, region, seller credibility, and return rights before buying another physical card.
