Pips is a domino-placement logic puzzle: cover every board cell with the supplied tiles, use each tile once, and satisfy the clue for every colored region. A tile can cross a region boundary; each half counts toward the clue for the cell it covers.
How to play Pips
- Read the region clues. Each colored region marks the cells covered by its rule. Identify whether its clue calls for an exact sum, matching values, distinct values, or a sum above or below a threshold.
- Place dominoes on adjacent cells. Each domino covers two neighboring cells. Its halves may have different pip values and may land in different colored regions.
- Check each half against its own cell. Add a half’s pip value to the region containing that cell—not automatically to the region containing the other half.
- Complete the tiling. Cover every cell exactly once, with no overlap, and use every supplied domino. A region clue can be satisfied while the board is still invalid if the tiles do not cover the board correctly.
- Rotate tiles when needed. Tom’s Guide reports that the NYT interface rotates a domino when tapped and includes an interactive tutorial; controls may change over time. Tom’s Guide’s Pips walkthrough
What the Pips clues mean
A clue applies to all the cells in its colored region. The clue may constrain the sum of the values or how the values relate to one another.
| Clue | What must be true in that region |
|---|---|
| A number | The pip values add up to exactly that number. It is a total for the region, not a value required on every cell. |
| = | All pip values in the region are the same. The symbol does not specify what that shared value must be. |
| ≠ | Every pip value in the region is different; no value repeats. |
| <n | The region’s sum is strictly less than n. A sum equal to n does not qualify. |
| >n | The region’s sum is strictly greater than n. A sum equal to n does not qualify. |
These definitions are described in PipsPlay’s rules guide, an independent implementation, and are consistent with the rule types listed in the New York Times Company’s launch announcement. The NYT announcement lists exact sums, equals, not-equals, greater-than, and less-than clues. New York Times Company launch announcement, August 18, 2025
How to reason through a board
Start with placements that have few alternatives, then use them to narrow the rest of the board. A high or low target sum, a region with only a few cells, or a tile that fits only one open pair can make a useful starting point. Treat these as solving tactics rather than a published NYT difficulty formula.

- Track values by cell. When a domino crosses a boundary, record each half in its own region. The tile’s two values do not have to be governed by the same clue.
- Use totals to bound possibilities. For an exact-sum region, compare the target with the values already placed and the cells left open. For a strict inequality, remember that matching the threshold still fails.
- Keep placement and clue checks separate. A valid-looking region total is not enough: the full board must still be tiled without gaps, overlaps, or unused dominoes.
- Recheck the whole board after a change. Moving one domino can affect two regions and the remaining legal cell pairs.
Where to play Pips and what to expect
The New York Times Company announced Pips on August 18, 2025, describing it as a new NYT Games logic game playable in the NYT Games apps for iOS and Android and on mobile or desktop web. That is the availability stated in the launch announcement, not a guarantee of current access or a particular subscription requirement; check the current NYT Games listing for your region and account. A Tom’s Guide walkthrough published August 31, 2025, reported Easy, Medium, and Hard options, along with a tutorial and tap-to-rotate controls. It observed that harder levels had more complicated rules and layouts, but the available sources do not establish an official rubric for how NYT assigns difficulty or guarantee that these interface details remain unchanged. Why a simple-looking puzzle can be difficult
Pips combines two kinds of constraints: dominoes must tile the board, and each region must satisfy its clue. A placement that helps one region may force a difficult value or shape elsewhere. A 2026 paper by A. G. Alberti, F. Chierichetti, M. Giacchini, D. Muscillo, A. Panconesi, and E. Tani formally models Pips and proves that deciding whether a generalized instance is solvable is NP-complete—even when tile values are limited to zero and one and distinctness and inequality constraints are omitted. This is a result about the computational complexity of the generalized problem, not evidence that a particular daily board is beyond human solving. Alberti et al., LIPIcs FUN 2026
