How to Play Retro NES and SNES Games on Your Nintendo Wii

The Wii can still play NES and SNES games, but new Virtual Console purchases are unavailable. Here are the official, homebrew and original-cartridge options for 2026.

Yes—your Nintendo Wii can still play NES and Super NES games in 2026. However, you cannot buy new Virtual Console games: Nintendo closed the Wii Shop Channel on January 30, 2019. Your practical choices are to use Virtual Console titles you previously purchased, install homebrew emulators, or use separate cartridge hardware.

For the broadest Wii-based setup, install the Homebrew Channel and use FCE Ultra GX for NES games and Snes9x GX for SNES games. Use only game files you are legally permitted to use, and understand that modifying a Wii carries some risk.

Choose the right method

Method Best for Advantages Drawbacks
Previously purchased Virtual Console Official Wii downloads you already own Simple and unmodified No new purchases; redownload access is not guaranteed permanently
Homebrew emulators A larger library on existing Wii hardware Flexible SD/USB storage, save states and multiplayer support Requires console modification and file management
Original cartridges with separate hardware Collectors who want to use physical games Uses original media A standard Wii cannot read NES or SNES cartridges directly
Modern official platform Plug-and-play users Current support and official distribution Requires another platform; catalogues vary by region and date

Check which Wii you have

Turn the console over and find the model number beginning with RVL-. An original RVL-001 Wii has four GameCube controller ports beneath a top flap. Nintendo says this is the Wii model that supports GameCube controllers and accessories; later revisions and the Wii mini may not.

Do not confuse an original Wii with a Wii U running vWii mode. vWii has different homebrew procedures and should not be treated as an identical installation target.

Also record your system version: open Wii Options, choose Wii Settings, and read the version in the upper-right corner. Installation methods depend on the system version, region, model and whether the Homebrew Channel is already installed.

Method 1: Use Virtual Console games you already purchased

The Wii Shop Channel closed on January 30, 2019. Purchases ended that day, and Nintendo also records March 26, 2018, as the final day to add Wii Points or redeem Wii Points Cards. Any guide telling you to buy Wii Points or purchase a new NES or SNES game from the Wii Shop is obsolete.

If a previously purchased game is already installed, launch it from the Wii Menu. If you deleted it, open the Wii Shop Channel and look for the account’s purchased-software or redownload option. This may still work, but Nintendo says redownload services will eventually end and has not provided a permanent guarantee. See Nintendo’s Wii Shop support information.

A title you never purchased cannot be obtained through the official Wii Shop route in 2026.

Controllers for Virtual Console

A Wii Remote held sideways works for many NES games. A Wii Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro is generally the better choice, particularly for SNES. The Classic Controller connects to the Wii Remote’s external extension socket; it does not plug directly into the console. Some games support GameCube controllers, but only compatible Wii models—especially RVL-001—have the required ports.

INDMEM SD Card 2GB Class 4 Flash Memory Card 2G SLC Stanard Secure Digital Cards
  • Class 4 Standard SD flash memory card (Secure Digital Card). Compatible with mainstream SD card readers
  • SLC high speed read/write technology. Excellent work for Class 4 standard SD card devices, such as specific older digital cameras / 3D printers / GPS / MP3 / CNC / PDA / industrial machine, etc.
  • SD Card Made in Japan. Assembled in China
  • 2GB storage capacity. The actual allowable capacity is 1.83GB / 1.87GB
  • 1 year manufacturer's limited service.Compatible with trail camera, old digital camera, DSLR cameras and dash cams.

Check the compatible-controller icons for the individual title. Nintendo notes that requirements vary by game; its controller compatibility guide is more authoritative than a general list.

Method 2: Install homebrew emulators

Homebrew is the flexible option for an existing Wii owner who is comfortable copying files to an SD card or USB device. FCE Ultra GX emulates NES, while Snes9x GX emulates SNES. They are third-party homebrew applications, not official Nintendo software, and no emulator guarantees perfect compatibility with every game, regional version, peripheral or dump.

What you need

  • A working original Wii
  • A reliable SD or SDHC card formatted as FAT32
  • A computer and SD-card reader
  • Internet access for obtaining the current installation and emulator files
  • A Wii Remote and, ideally, a Classic Controller
  • Legally obtained game files
  • Backups of important Wii data

Use a reliable, modest-capacity card rather than a suspicious, counterfeit or exFAT-only card. Remove unnecessary peripherals, avoid interrupting power during installation, and understand that console modification carries a small risk of software failure or bricking.

1. Install the Homebrew Channel carefully

Check the current WiiBrew homebrew setup instructions for your Wii’s system version and region. On a compatible Wii, LetterBomb uses the Wii Message Board to launch an application from an SD card. The LetterBomb documentation explains that process.

Do not assume LetterBomb works on every Wii, use a package intended for another region, or mix files from unrelated guides. Avoid random “one-click hack” sites and old softmod bundles of uncertain provenance. If the Wii already has the Homebrew Channel, you may not need to repeat this step.

Visit the SanDisk Video Knowledge Base for more information.)
  • Compatible with SanDisk SD UHS-I card reader (sold separately)

2. Install FCE Ultra GX for NES

  1. Download the current FCE Ultra GX release from a reputable project source or the Open Shop Channel.
  2. Extract its apps folder to the root of the SD card or USB device.
  3. Copy the emulator’s support folder to the device root.
  4. Put legally obtained NES game files in /fceugx/roms/.
  5. Put saves, where applicable, in /fceugx/saves/.
  6. Insert the storage device, open the Homebrew Channel and launch FCE Ultra GX.

The project documentation describes SD, SDHC and USB support, controller configuration, save states, SRAM saves and multiplayer features. It also documents archive support, but the exact behavior can depend on the release and file.

3. Install Snes9x GX for SNES

  1. Download the current release from a reputable project source or the Open Shop Channel.
  2. Extract the application so it appears under /apps/snes9xgx/.
  3. Create or use the emulator’s expected support directory, commonly /snes9xgx/.
  4. Place legally obtained SNES game files in the ROM directory specified by that release.
  5. Launch Snes9x GX through the Homebrew Channel.
  6. Configure controls and video settings, then test one known-compatible game.

Folder conventions can change between releases, so follow the included README if it differs from this example. The Snes9x GX documentation covers SD and USB storage, save snapshots, SRAM saves, custom controls, multiplayer and video modes.

Typical storage layout

/apps/fceugx/boot.dol
/fceugx/roms/
/fceugx/saves/

/apps/snes9xgx/boot.dol
/snes9xgx/

The exact folder name may vary. Do not place the downloaded ZIP file inside apps; extract it first.

ROMs, BIOS files and legality

Emulator software, BIOS files and game ROM images are separate things. An emulator may be open-source while the BIOS or game code remains copyrighted. Owning a Wii, cartridge or physical game does not create a universal right to download a copy from the internet.

For a U.S. audience, the U.S. Copyright Office warns that loading an unauthorized backup copy of a computer program into memory can constitute copyright infringement. Laws differ by jurisdiction, and cartridge dumping, copying and circumvention rules can be complex. Use only game images you are legally permitted to use where you live. Do not use ROM-download sites or “preloaded” SD cards containing copyrighted games.

Controller recommendations

  • NES: A sideways Wii Remote is inexpensive and adequate; a Classic Controller is more comfortable for long sessions.
  • SNES: Use a Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro for the required button layout.
  • Two-player games: Confirm that the emulator detects both controllers and configure Player 1 and Player 2 separately.
  • GameCube controllers: Use them only if your Wii has the required ports, typically model RVL-001.
  • Third-party Bluetooth pads: Compatibility depends on the emulator and adapter; do not assume they will work.

FCE Ultra GX documents support for Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Classic Controller, Wii U Pro Controller and GameCube controllers. Snes9x GX supports several Wii controller configurations as well. The specific release’s documentation should take precedence.

Video settings on modern televisions

A Wii normally outputs composite video and can use component video on compatible displays and cables. Some Wii software supports 480p through component output, but not every modern television accepts every Wii signal.

Start with the emulator’s default video mode and change one setting at a time. Avoid forcing PAL or NTSC unless you know the display and game require it. Keep the original 4:3 aspect ratio rather than automatically stretching NES and SNES games to 16:9.

If the screen goes black, power-cycle the Wii and restore the last known-compatible setting. A television without composite inputs may require a reputable scaler; cheap composite-to-HDMI converters can cause blur, lag or compatibility problems.

Normal saves versus save states

Normal game saves, such as battery-backed SRAM saves, are closer to original hardware behavior and are generally more portable. Save states are convenient snapshots but may become incompatible after changing emulator versions or game revisions.

Back up the entire emulator save directory before replacing an SD card or updating an emulator. If a game crashes when loading, move the affected save state aside and try the game’s normal save system.

Troubleshooting

The Homebrew Channel does not appear

  1. Confirm the Wii’s system version and region.
  2. Check that the SD card is FAT32 and that files are at the card’s root, not one folder too deep.
  3. Verify the LetterBomb message’s date location and refresh the Wii Message Board if necessary.
  4. Try a different reliable SD card.
  5. Recreate the exploit package instead of combining files from multiple guides.
  6. Follow the current WiiBrew setup guide.

The emulator is missing from Homebrew Channel

Check for a structure such as /apps/fceugx/boot.dol or /apps/snes9xgx/boot.dol. The folder name can differ by release. Extract the package rather than placing its ZIP file in apps.

The emulator opens but lists no games

Check the documented ROM directory, confirm that the SD or USB device is mounted, verify the file extension and archive support, and test whether the game file is damaged. For FCE Ultra GX, the documented locations include /fceugx/roms/ and /fceugx/saves/.

The controller does not respond

For Virtual Console, check the title’s controller icons and reconnect the Classic Controller to the Wii Remote. For homebrew, open controller configuration, select the correct type and remap buttons if necessary. Test the controller in another application.

The game has wrong colors, speed or aspect ratio

Restore default video settings, disable forced PAL/NTSC modes, try original rather than filtered video, test another cable or television input, and keep the game at 4:3.

The game crashes or has graphical glitches

Test another game, move the affected save state, use normal in-game saves, and check the emulator’s compatibility notes. Possible causes include a bad dump, regional behavior, unsupported special hardware, an incompatible video mode or an emulator limitation. Do not replace the file with an untrusted “fixed” ROM.

Is Wii homebrew worth it?

It is worthwhile if you already own a Wii, want NES and SNES games in one place, and are comfortable managing an SD card, controller settings and occasional compatibility issues. It is not the best choice if you want a fully supported, plug-and-play experience with no modification risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use installed Virtual Console games when you already own them. Choose homebrew for flexibility. Choose original consoles or separate cartridge hardware for an authentic physical-media setup. Choose a modern official platform if simplicity and current support matter more than using the Wii.
