If Windows reports that physx3characterkinematic_x64.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the affected game usually has an incomplete, damaged, quarantined, or mismatched PhysX installation. The safest repair for physx3characterkinematic_x64.dll is to verify or reinstall the game that uses it, rather than copying a downloaded DLL into a Windows system folder.
What this file actually does
PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll is a real NVIDIA PhysX 3.x runtime library for 64-bit Windows applications. It provides the character-controller portion of PhysX, which games can use for player movement, collision handling, and related character behavior.

The file is normally redistributed by the game or application that requires it. It is not a standard Windows component, and it should not normally be stored in:

The x64 suffix means that this copy is intended for a 64-bit application. A 32-bit game generally needs the corresponding x86 PhysX files instead.

Games commonly keep this library beside their own executable with companion files such as:

Examples of games that have shipped application-local versions of this PhysX library include HITMAN, HITMAN 2, HITMAN 3, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Ni no Kuni II, SpellForce 3, Warframe, and Bugsnax. The exact binary can differ between games and between game builds, so a file from one title is not a safe replacement for another title.
You also do not necessarily need an NVIDIA graphics card. PhysX application binaries can run through the CPU, and many games bundle the PhysX files they need independently of the installed GPU brand.

Fix 1: Verify the affected game
This is the most likely solution when the error appeared after an update, failed installation, disk cleanup, manual deletion, or an interrupted download.
File verification compares the installed game with the launcher’s known files and downloads replacements when appropriate. It is safer than replacing one DLL manually because PhysX libraries often need to match one another.
Before starting, close the game and its launcher completely. If the launcher remains in the notification area, right-click it and choose its exit or quit command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game through Steam.
A successful repair should either replace the missing file or report that the installation is already complete. Launch the game after verification rather than opening its executable from an old desktop shortcut.
If Steam reports success but the error remains:
- Right-click the game in Steam again.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Browse.
- Note the folder that opens.
- Confirm that it is the same installation directory used by the shortcut or launcher.
- Look for the game executable and the nearby PhysX files.
If the executable being launched is in another folder, you may have verified one installation while Windows is starting another.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the three dots beside the game title.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to complete.
- Start the game from the Epic Games Launcher.
If Epic reports that the files are valid but Windows still shows the error, use the same launcher menu to open or inspect the installation directory. Check whether the game has more than one installation, an old backup folder, or a separate executable used by a mod manager.
Other launchers
Most launchers use a similar process:
- Open the game library.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its settings, manage, or three-dot menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or a similarly named option.
- Allow the launcher to replace damaged files.
- Start the game through that launcher.
If the launcher has no verification feature, use its official uninstall and reinstall process. Do not delete individual PhysX files first unless the game’s own support instructions specifically require it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to tell whether this fix worked
The repair worked if:
- The game reaches its menu without the DLL error.
- The launcher no longer reports missing or damaged files.
- The file appears beside the game executable.
- The error changes to identify a different missing dependency.
A different missing dependency is useful information. It means the loader moved past one problem and found the next incomplete part of the installation.
Fix 2: Reinstall the game or its bundled redistributables
If verification does not restore PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll, the installation may be too incomplete for the launcher to repair.
Some games include redistributable installers in folders named:
_CommonRedistRedistRedist\PhysXSupportPrerequisites
The exact folder name varies by game.
Reinstall a bundled PhysX package
- Open the game’s installation folder from the launcher.
- Look for
_CommonRedist,Redist,Support, orPrerequisites. - Open any PhysX-related folder.
- Run the included installer.
- Choose Repair if that option is offered.
- If no repair option appears, complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Run the launcher’s file verification again.
A bundled installer may restore a system runtime or older compatibility files, but it does not guarantee that it will restore the game’s private copy of PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll. Verification remains important.
Perform a clean game reinstall
If the game has no usable repair option:
- Back up save files if the game stores them locally.
- Remove mods and unofficial patches.
- Uninstall the game through its launcher.
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that the old installation folder is no longer being used.
- Install the game again from the official launcher or installer.
- Run file verification after installation.
- Start the game without mods.
Do not preserve old PhysX DLLs by copying them into the new installation. A partial mixture of old and new files can cause an entry-point error even when every file appears to be present.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine or block a game file. That does not prove the file was malicious or that it was a false positive. The detection, file path, and source need to be reviewed before restoring anything.
Check Protection history
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Inspect recent detections.
- Open any detection that references the affected game folder.
- Review the file path and detection details.
Microsoft describes these actions in its Windows Security Protection History guidance.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- The path belongs to the legitimate game installation.
- The game came from an official store or installer.
- The file was restored from a known installation rather than a random archive.
- The detection has been assessed and is not being ignored merely because the game will not start.
After restoring a legitimate quarantined file:
- Run the launcher’s file verification.
- Allow the launcher to download the official replacement if verification requests it.
- Start the game through the launcher.
- If the file is quarantined again, do not repeatedly restore it without investigating the detection.
Do not disable antivirus protection across the whole computer to solve one missing game file. If an exclusion is genuinely needed, exclude only the verified game folder and only after confirming the source of the installation. Remove the exclusion if it is no longer necessary.
Fix 4: Repair the official NVIDIA PhysX installation when several applications fail
Many games ship private PhysX files, so installing the NVIDIA PhysX System Software is not a universal replacement for a missing game-local DLL. It is more relevant when several PhysX applications fail or when the system PhysX installation itself appears damaged.
Use NVIDIA’s official PhysX System Software download page, not a DLL archive. The current package identified for this purpose is the NVIDIA PhysX System Software package, not the much older PhysX Legacy System Software package intended for older PhysX 2.x-era games.
Install or repair PhysX System Software
- Download the PhysX System Software installer from NVIDIA’s official website.
- Close games and launchers.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Choose the repair or installation option provided.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Verify the affected game again.
- Launch the game from its official launcher.
If only one game fails, this step is less likely to help than game verification. If several unrelated PhysX games fail, it becomes more reasonable.

Do not install the legacy PhysX package merely because the word “PhysX” appears in the error. The legacy package targets much older software and is not the normal repair for this PhysX 3.x character-controller library.
Fix 5: Install Visual C++ only when the error names it
Visual C++ can matter when the missing dependency is a Microsoft runtime, but it is not the normal source of PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll.
Install or repair Visual C++ when the error specifically names files such as:
MSVCP140.dllVCRUNTIME140.dllapi-ms-win-crt-*.dll
Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
The architecture must match the application:
vc_redist.x64.exeis for 64-bit applications.vc_redist.x86.exeis for 32-bit applications.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 64-bit and 32-bit programs, so choose the redistributable based on the game or application that is failing. Older Visual C++ packages may need to remain installed for older games. Do not uninstall every existing redistributable as a cleanup exercise.
Repair Visual C++
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++.
- Open the entry matching the architecture and package family named by the error.
- Select Modify if available.
- Choose Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the game again.
If the error still names PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll and does not identify a Visual C++ file, return to game verification instead of installing random runtime packages.
Fix 6: Distinguish DirectX errors from PhysX errors
DirectX is not the normal source of this PhysX DLL. Installing DirectX will not normally recreate a game’s private PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll.
DirectX repair becomes relevant when the error names legacy files such as:
Recommended Free Tools
d3dx9_*.dllxinput1_3.dllXAudio2_7.dll
For those errors, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer or the DirectX End-User Runtime June 2010 package, depending on the application’s requirements.
Do not install DirectX simply because a game uses PhysX. Treat the exact filename in the error as the starting point.
Fix 7: Check whether the application architecture matches the file
The _x64 suffix identifies a 64-bit PhysX library. A 32-bit executable normally needs x86 libraries, while a 64-bit executable needs x64 libraries.
Architecture problems can occur after:
- Copying files from another installation
- Applying an unofficial patch
- Installing a mod
- Restoring an old backup
- Keeping an old executable beside a new set of libraries
- Running a separate 32-bit launcher or utility
Check the installation
- Open the game’s installation folder through the launcher.
- Identify the executable used to start the game.
- Check the game’s official documentation or launcher notes for its architecture.
- Look for matching PhysX filenames in the same directory.
- Remove unofficial replacement files.
- Run verification again.
Do not use an x86 DLL to satisfy an x64 error or the reverse. Do not rename a file to change its architecture. The contents of a DLL do not change when its filename changes.
If the game launcher has both a 32-bit and 64-bit executable, start the version supported by the installed game files. A 64-bit Windows installation alone does not prove that every game executable is 64-bit.
Fix 8: Repair mismatched PhysX companion files
An entry-point error is different from a missing-file error.
For example:
The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library
PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll.
This can happen when the character-controller DLL is from one PhysX build while PhysX3_x64.dll, PhysX3Common_x64.dll, or another companion library is from a different build. The named file may be present and still fail because the functions it expects are not available in the companion files that load beside it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Remove mods or unofficial patches temporarily.
- Open the game launcher.
- Run file verification.
- Allow every PhysX-related file to be restored.
- Do not keep a manually copied DLL in the folder.
- Start the game through the official launcher.
If verification does not replace the complete bundle, uninstall and reinstall the game. Restoring only PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll is not enough when the surrounding PhysX files are mismatched.
An entry-point error reported with HITMAN has been associated with PhysX binaries being present but incompatible. That is why replacing one file from another game is especially risky.
Fix 9: Understand “specified module could not be found”
Windows can display:
The specified module could not be found.
even when PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll is visible in the game folder.
A DLL can depend on other DLLs. The loader may locate the named file, begin loading it, and then fail to locate one of its dependencies. Microsoft documents the process in its DLL search order guidance.
Possible reasons include:
- A companion PhysX DLL is missing.
- A Visual C++ runtime is missing.
- The launcher is starting a different installation.
- The file is in the wrong directory.
- The architecture does not match.
- A file is blocked or quarantined.
- The DLL or one of its companions is damaged.
The practical repair is to restore the entire official application package. Do not conclude that the named file alone is absent just because the message mentions it.
Fix 10: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM or ActiveX components. Microsoft explains the command in its regsvr32 documentation.

It can also produce another misleading error, making the original problem harder to understand. Restore the game files instead.
Fix 11: Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
Copying a game DLL into a Windows system directory is a common repair-shop mistake.
It can fail because:
- The game searches its own directory first.
- The copied file is the wrong build.
- The application needs companion PhysX files beside it.
- A 32-bit and 64-bit file can be confused.
- Another application may load the wrong copy later.
- The copy may not have the dependencies expected by the game.
If manual copying is unavoidable, use only a verified backup from the same game build or the same official application installer.
Recommended Free Tools
Place the file in the affected game’s own directory, restore matching companion PhysX files when necessary, and run verification afterward. Never use a file from another game, a random DLL archive, or an unknown upload.
Fix 12: Use Windows component repair only when Windows itself is affected
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They generally do not restore a game-local PhysX DLL.
Use them when:
- Several unrelated applications fail.
- Windows has broader corruption symptoms.
- System files are failing outside the game.
- The problem followed a system repair issue.
- Windows Update or core Windows functions are also malfunctioning.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for the scan to reach completion.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game launcher’s verification again.
Microsoft provides the supported sequence in its System File Checker and DISM instructions.
A successful DISM or SFC repair does not prove that the game file was restored. The meaningful test is whether the game launches after Windows restarts and the application files have been verified.
If SFC reports that it repaired Windows files but the same game error remains, that is not a contradiction. The game-local DLL may never have been part of the Windows component store.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while the game installation remains damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, while reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that game.
Fix 13: Update or reinstall the graphics driver only when evidence points there
A graphics-driver reinstall is not the normal repair for a missing application-local PhysX DLL.
Consider the driver only when:
- Several unrelated games fail.
- The game also reports graphics-driver errors.
- You are seeing display-driver resets or rendering corruption.
- The issue began immediately after a driver change.
- The game fails after the files have been verified and the PhysX package is healthy.
Check the driver through Device Manager
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
Microsoft also documents driver updates through Device Manager in its driver update instructions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 14: Check Windows Features only for a matching legacy requirement
Windows Features are not a normal solution for PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll.
Do not enable random Windows components in the hope that one will recreate the file. If the game specifically reports that it needs an older Windows feature such as DirectPlay, use this procedure:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Expand Legacy Components.
- Select DirectPlay only if the game’s documentation or error specifically requires it.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Run the game again.
DirectPlay will not replace a missing PhysX character-controller DLL. It is relevant only to applications that explicitly depend on that legacy Windows feature.
A failed .NET installation is also not established as a direct cause of this native PhysX DLL error. Install or repair .NET only when the application identifies a .NET requirement or produces a .NET-specific error.
Fix 15: Use System Restore after a clearly identified system change
System Restore is an escalation step, not the first repair for one missing game file.
It can be considered when:
- The problem began immediately after a driver or Windows change.
- The game files verify correctly.
- Several applications are affected.
- Other repairs have not helped.
- A restore point exists from before the failure.
Start System Restore
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm only after checking which programs and drivers will be affected.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
System Restore will not reliably rebuild a game’s private PhysX bundle. Verify the game again after Windows restarts.
Why random DLL download sites are unsafe
Downloading physx3characterkinematic_x64.dll from a random DLL website is not a reliable repair.
The downloaded file may be:
- A different build from the one your game requires.
- The wrong x86 or x64 architecture.
- Missing its companion PhysX libraries.
- Modified or damaged.
- Packaged with unwanted software or malware.
- Placed in a directory the game does not search.
Even a clean file can create an entry-point failure if it does not match PhysX3_x64.dll and PhysX3Common_x64.dll.
Use these sources instead:
- The affected game’s launcher verification or repair feature.
- The game’s official installer.
- The game’s bundled
_CommonRedistorRedistinstaller. - NVIDIA’s official PhysX System Software page when a system PhysX installation is genuinely involved.
- Microsoft’s official pages for Visual C++, DirectX legacy components, Windows repair, and drivers.
The file’s presence in a crash report or module list also does not prove that it caused the crash. It may simply be one library loaded by the game.

What to do when reinstalling does not help
Repeated reinstallations can fail when the same underlying condition keeps removing or bypassing the repaired files.
Check the following:
The launcher may be repairing the wrong folder
Use the launcher’s Browse, Open installation folder, or Manage option. Compare that directory with the path shown in the error or shortcut properties.
Antivirus may remove the file again
Check Protection history immediately after verification. If the file disappears again, inspect the detection rather than restoring it repeatedly.
Mods may be replacing PhysX libraries
Disable mods, unofficial patches, trainers, overlays, and custom launchers. Restore an unmodified installation before testing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Cloud synchronization may be restoring old files
Temporarily review cloud-save or game-folder synchronization settings if old files keep returning. Do not delete cloud data without confirming what is being synchronized.
The disk or permissions may be interfering
Install the game to a location where your account can write files normally. Check for available disk space and drive errors if other files also disappear or fail verification.
The executable may be different from the one being repaired
Some games include separate launchers, test executables, anti-cheat launchers, or 32-bit utilities. Start through the official launcher and note the actual installation path.
Frequently asked questions
Is PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll part of Windows?
No. It is normally an application-local PhysX runtime file supplied by the game or another program that uses PhysX.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is it a graphics-card driver file?
Usually no. It is commonly stored beside the game executable. A graphics driver may be relevant to a separate crash, but it does not normally restore this game-owned DLL.
Do I need an NVIDIA GPU?
Not necessarily. PhysX application binaries can run through the CPU, and games can bundle their own PhysX runtime files.
What does x64 mean?
It means the file is intended for a 64-bit application. It does not mean that the file belongs in a 64-bit Windows system folder.
Will the NVIDIA PhysX installer restore this exact file?
Not necessarily. Many games keep private PhysX copies, and the system package is not a universal replacement for every game’s PhysX3CharacterKinematic_x64.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I install Visual C++?
Only when the error also names a Visual C++ runtime such as MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, or an api-ms-win-crt-*.dll file. Otherwise, repair the game first.
Should I install DirectX?
Only when the error names a DirectX component such as d3dx9_*.dll, xinput1_3.dll, or XAudio2_7.dll. DirectX is not the normal source of this PhysX library.
Should I run regsvr32?
No. This is an application runtime DLL, not a normal COM or ActiveX component that needs registration.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Keep the file in the affected game’s own directory with its matching PhysX companions.
Why does Windows say the module is missing when I can see the file?
The named DLL may have a missing dependency, may be the wrong architecture, or may be part of a mismatched PhysX set. Restore the complete application package.
Why does the game report an entry-point error?
The PhysX files may come from different builds. Restore the full matching bundle through verification or reinstallation.
What if the file was quarantined?
Open Windows Security, inspect Protection history, verify the game’s source and file path, restore only when appropriate, and run verification afterward.
Can SFC fix this error?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this DLL is normally owned by the game. Use SFC and DISM when Windows itself shows broader corruption.
Recommended Free Tools
Can System Restore fix it?
It may help if a recent system or driver change caused broader failures, but game verification remains the direct repair for a missing game-local DLL.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Include:
- The exact error text
- The affected game or application
- The launcher being used
- The full path shown for the file
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the problem began after an update or reinstall
- Whether antivirus detected or quarantined anything
- Whether verification restored files
- Whether the file exists beside the game executable
- Whether the error is missing-file, dependency, entry-point, or “not designed to run” wording
The most useful first move remains the same: identify the game directory, verify the complete installation, and restore the matching PhysX files from the official source that installed the game.
