To play Roblox with a controller on a PC, connect a compatible gamepad to Windows by USB or Bluetooth, launch Roblox, and enter an experience. Press Start: if the Roblox menu opens, the controller is being detected. Basic controls are often familiar, but each Roblox experience can assign its own actions.
Roblox supports gamepads on Windows PCs, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers. The practical setup is simple: connect the controller to Windows, launch Roblox, join an experience, then press Start. If the Roblox menu opens, the Roblox client is receiving gamepad input.

The important limitation is that Roblox does not impose one identical controller layout on every experience. Roblox provides controller support and common defaults, while individual experience creators can assign their own actions and prompts. Expect the sticks to handle movement and camera in many experiences, but check each experience’s help, settings, and on-screen prompts for its specific actions.

- A PC running a supported 64-bit version of Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- A Windows-compatible gamepad. Xbox and PlayStation controllers are official examples of gamepads Roblox accepts; they are examples, not the only possible choices.
- A USB cable, or Bluetooth on the PC if you want a wireless connection.
- The Roblox app/client and an internet connection.
Roblox’s published Windows requirements also list DirectX 10 feature-level support, at least 1 GB of RAM, 300 MB of storage, and a recommended 4–8 Mb/s connection for a single-use household. These are baseline requirements; a demanding Roblox experience may need more from the PC or network.

Connect the controller to Windows
Option 1: Use USB
- Connect the controller directly to the PC with a data-capable USB cable supported by that controller.
- Wait for Windows to recognize it.
- Leave the controller connected, then open Roblox.
USB is usually the most straightforward first test because it avoids Bluetooth pairing and battery variables.
Option 2: Pair it with Bluetooth
- Turn on Bluetooth in Windows.
- Put the controller into its manufacturer’s pairing or discoverable mode.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Add device, choose Bluetooth, then select the controller when it appears.
- Wait for Windows to show that the device is connected, then launch Roblox.
On a Windows 10 PC, the equivalent Bluetooth controls may appear under Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. If the PC does not include Bluetooth hardware, a USB Bluetooth adapter is a reasonable way to add wireless pairing capability. Check that the adapter supports your version of Windows before buying it.
DualSense example
A PlayStation DualSense can connect to supported Windows PCs over USB or Bluetooth. For Bluetooth pairing, Sony’s documented sequence is to make sure the controller’s player indicator is off, hold Create and PS until the light bar flashes, turn on Bluetooth on the PC, and select the controller from the available-device list.

Start Roblox and verify the controller
- Open Roblox on the PC.
- Join the experience you want to play.
- Press the controller’s Start button.
Start is reserved for opening the Roblox menu. When that menu appears, it is a useful confirmation that Roblox is receiving input from the controller. On controllers that label the equivalent button differently, look for the Menu or Options-style button.
You can still use the keyboard and mouse after connecting a gamepad. A controller is an alternative primary input, not a requirement for playing Roblox on PC.
How Roblox controller controls usually work
These are safe conventions to expect, not a promise that every Roblox experience uses the same mapping.

| Controller input | What it commonly does |
|---|---|
| First thumbstick | Generally moves the character. |
| Second thumbstick | Generally moves the camera. |
| A / Cross-equivalent | Often accepts a prompt or performs a primary action. |
| B / Circle-equivalent | Often cancels a prompt or performs a secondary action. |
| Start / Menu / Options-equivalent | Opens the Roblox menu. |
| Triggers, bumpers, X/Y or Square/Triangle | May control gameplay actions, but their exact function is set by the experience. |
Do not assume that sprinting, shooting, inventory, driving, building, or minigame actions will use a particular button. Roblox creators can define gamepad bindings for their own actions. Roblox also supplies defaults for movement, camera control, and basic environment interaction, which is why the basic controls may feel familiar while game-specific controls differ.
If something is not working
The controller does not appear in Windows
- For a wired controller, reconnect the cable and try another USB port or a known data-capable cable.
- For Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth on, put the controller back into discoverable mode, and repeat Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth.
- If the PC has no Bluetooth capability, use a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter for wireless pairing, or use USB instead.
Windows says the controller is connected, but Roblox does nothing
- Join an actual Roblox experience rather than testing only in the website or launcher.
- Press Start.
- If the Roblox menu opens, the client is detecting controller input. Return to the experience and look for its control hints or settings.
- If Start does not open the menu, disconnect and reconnect the controller in Windows, then close and reopen Roblox before testing again.
Movement works, but one action does not
This commonly points to the experience’s own controller design rather than a lack of Roblox controller support. Look for an in-game help panel, settings screen, tutorial, or controller prompts. The creator may have assigned that action to another button, omitted a gamepad binding, or designed a UI that is more complete for keyboard and mouse.
The experience shows keyboard or mouse prompts
That can be an experience-level UI issue. Roblox gives creators tools to detect and react to a player’s preferred input, but not every experience presents controller-specific prompts consistently. Try the gamepad controls anyway, check its help screen, or use keyboard and mouse for an unsupported screen.

Choosing a controller for Roblox on PC
An Xbox Wireless Controller is a direct, sensible option for this use because Roblox explicitly identifies Xbox controllers as accepted gamepads and Windows includes a standard Bluetooth pairing flow. Choose the connection method you actually want: USB for a simple wired setup, or Bluetooth for wireless play.
A PlayStation controller can also be a suitable choice, particularly if you already own one. For any controller listing, confirm Windows compatibility and whether it supports the connection you plan to use. Do not rely on a product listing to guarantee that every Roblox experience will have a complete controller layout.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a controller to play Roblox on PC?
No. Roblox documentation allows a PC player to use a Bluetooth gamepad as primary input while keyboard and mouse remain available.
Are Roblox controller controls the same in every game?
No. Roblox supports gamepads, but creators can define their own gamepad bindings. Basic movement and camera controls commonly follow familiar stick conventions, while game-specific actions can vary.

How can I tell whether Roblox detects my controller?
Join an experience and press Start. If the Roblox menu opens, the Roblox client is receiving controller input.
What if my PC has no Bluetooth?
Check Windows Bluetooth settings, make the controller discoverable again, and use Add device to pair it. If the PC lacks Bluetooth hardware, use USB or add a Windows-compatible USB Bluetooth adapter.
Why do I still see keyboard prompts when using a controller?
This can happen when an experience has not fully adapted its interface to the player’s preferred input. Check its help or settings, and use keyboard and mouse where necessary.
The Bottom Line
Connect a compatible controller to Windows, enter a Roblox experience, and press Start. That confirms basic gamepad detection; the rest of the button layout depends on the experience you are playing.
