Google’s January 29, 2023 Doodle, Celebrating Bubble Tea, turned the homepage into an interactive game about preparing the Taiwanese drink. Google framed the occasion around bubble tea’s addition to the emoji lineup three years earlier—not as a universal “Bubble Tea Day.”

A playful tribute to a Taiwanese drink
Google describes bubble tea as a drink of tea, milk, and tapioca pearls, also known as boba tea or pearl milk tea. Its Doodle places the beverage in the context of traditional Taiwanese tea culture, while noting that the modern drink emerged in the 1980s and later became popular internationally.

Google does not establish a universal set of controls, a level count, scoring system, play time, or “perfect score” for the archived game. Those details should not be assumed from look-alike games or videos.

Why January 29 matters
Google selected January 29 because, according to its Doodle description, bubble tea was announced as a new emoji on that date in 2020. Unicode’s Emoji 13.0 announcement includes bubble tea among the emoji finalized for 2020, supporting the timeline. The date therefore marks Google’s stated emoji-related occasion for this Doodle rather than a broader holiday claim.
A small look behind the sounds
Gabriel Tiburcio, credited by Google for music and sound, has described the project from a contributor’s perspective: playing as a Taiwanese mountain dog while making milk tea, with foley including rainfall, grass rustling, stirring, pouring, and a tapioca-bounce effect. It is a useful glimpse of how much texture can sit behind a short homepage game, but it is contributor testimony rather than an official gameplay specification.
