Most older SafeDisc games that need the blocked secdrv.sys driver will not run normally on a fully updated Windows 10 PC. SecuROM is different: disc-based checks may still work, while some online Product Activation systems no longer do. First identify the exact game edition, then look for an official patch or a legitimate DRM-free release. Compatibility mode can help with ordinary legacy-software problems, but it cannot restore a blocked driver or a dead activation service.
Identify the exact game and edition first
Protection can differ between a retail disc, a later re-release, and digital editions of the same game. A Steam or GOG build may use a replacement executable even if the original disc used SafeDisc or SecuROM. Before changing settings, note:
- The game title, publisher, region, and whether it is a standalone game or expansion.
- Whether it is a retail CD/DVD, Steam, GOG, EA app/Origin, Ubisoft Connect, or another edition.
- The installed patch version and the executable that launches the game.
- Your Windows 10 edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the game asks for the original disc, an activation code, or an internet connection.
Check the specific game and edition in PCGamingWiki’s SafeDisc guide or SecuROM guide. A filename or error message alone is not enough to justify changing system files. Some games use other protection systems, and a game can also fail for reasons unrelated to DRM.
SafeDisc and SecuROM are different problems
| Protection | What it checks | Typical Windows 10 issue | What to try first |
|---|---|---|---|
| SafeDisc | Older releases may rely on the secdrv.sys kernel driver. |
Most older releases requiring that driver fail on fully updated Windows 10 because Microsoft disabled or blocked it for security reasons. | Look for an official patch or DRM-free re-release; otherwise consider an isolated older Windows installation. |
| SecuROM disc authentication | Checks the original physical disc. | May still work on some modern systems; failures can also involve the disc, optical drive, or game-specific compatibility. | Confirm the exact release, test the disc and drive, and look for an official patch. |
| SecuROM Product Activation | Checks an activation code or online service. | Activation may fail if the publisher’s server, certificate support, or the game’s activation service is no longer available. | Check for a publisher-provided replacement, official patch, or DRM-free edition. |
Microsoft’s September 8, 2015 security bulletin describes changes affecting secdrv.sys in update KB3086255. That is the central SafeDisc issue; it does not mean every SecuROM implementation is blocked in the same way. See Microsoft’s MS15-097 bulletin.

Try safe Windows fixes for non-DRM problems
Compatibility settings can help with old installers, permissions, display behavior, or legacy Windows assumptions. They do not repair DRM that depends on an unavailable driver or online service.
- Right-click the game installer or executable and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab and select Run compatibility troubleshooter, or open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Test one suggested compatibility setting at a time. Record which setting changes the behavior, then keep it only if it helps.
- If the disc installer fails, try installing from the disc and then applying the latest official patch for that exact region, edition, and executable version.
Do not assume Windows 95 or Windows 98 compatibility mode is a universal fix. Microsoft describes compatibility tools as a way to troubleshoot older applications, not as a way to restore removed kernel-driver support. See Microsoft’s compatibility guidance. Use Run as administrator only if there is a genuine permissions problem; it does not make SafeDisc load.
Enable DirectPlay only when the game needs it
DirectPlay is a legacy networking component, not a SafeDisc or SecuROM repair. If the game specifically reports a DirectPlay dependency, open Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off, expand Legacy Components, enable DirectPlay, and restart if Windows requests it. If the error persists, follow the game-specific troubleshooting guidance at PCGamingWiki’s DirectPlay page. Enabling it will not restore a blocked DRM driver.

SafeDisc: why older disc releases fail
Older SafeDisc versions—generally those up to about 4.59—commonly depend on secdrv.sys; exact behavior varies by version and executable. Possible clues include a SecDrv.sys file on the disc or in the installation, an .icd file associated with the game executable, a startup error about a missing or blocked driver, or a game that accepts the disc during installation but does nothing when launched. These clues are not conclusive, so confirm the specific release before deciding that SafeDisc is responsible.

Some later SafeDisc releases may not require that kernel driver and can behave differently. Consult the title-specific SafeDisc entry and check for a patch before pursuing other fixes.
SecuROM: distinguish disc checks from activation
If the game asks for the original disc
A disc-authentication prompt does not by itself prove that Windows blocked SecuROM. Check that the disc is readable and that the optical drive works; a damaged disc, drive issue, or a game-specific compatibility problem can produce a similar result. Then verify the exact edition and patch level against the game’s SecuROM listing.

If the game asks to activate online
Product Activation can fail because a publisher server has been shut down, a certificate is no longer accepted, or the game’s executable was never updated. That is different from a disc-check failure. Look for an official publisher patch or replacement build. If the publisher’s activation service is unavailable and no replacement is offered, compatibility settings cannot recreate it; a DRM-free re-release may be the practical route.
Do not generalize from one SecuROM game to another. The protection variant and the specific disc or digital build determine whether the original release can still work.
Choose the safest route to play
| Option | Safety | When it makes sense | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official publisher patch | High | A patch exists for the exact game edition and executable. | It may be limited to a particular region, expansion, or patch version. |
| DRM-free re-release | High | The game is available in an authorized modern edition. | It may differ from the disc edition, omit content, or not support existing saves or mods. |
| Official Steam or publisher digital release | Medium to high; title-specific | The digital build replaces the old disc executable or is actively supported. | Steam does not guarantee DRM-free software; launchers or other protections may remain. |
| Separate older Windows PC | Medium | The disc release needs a legacy environment and suitable hardware is available. | Requires a properly licensed Windows installation and careful isolation. |
| Virtual machine | Medium; results vary | You can legally run an older Windows guest and the game does not need unsupported hardware. | Optical-disc authentication, 3D acceleration, activation, and peripherals may not work. |
Re-enable secdrv.sys |
Low | Not recommended for a normal internet-connected PC. | Restores a vulnerable driver and may weaken boot security; behavior varies by Windows build. |
Check for an official patch
- Search the publisher or developer’s support site for the exact game title, region, and edition.
- Install the latest official patch and read its notes for disc-check or DRM removal, compatibility updates, or Windows support.
- Back up the original installation before replacing files, and confirm that any patch targets your installed executable version.
A patch for another region, expansion, or executable can prevent the game from launching. If no official patch is available, check authorized storefronts such as GOG or Steam. GOG releases are marketed as DRM-free, but availability is title-specific. A Steam edition may retain Steamworks, a publisher launcher, or other protection. Compare the actual listing for included expansions, multiplayer, saves, mods, display fixes, and whether the game is still available. A re-release may have altered content, and purchasing one does not necessarily transfer ownership of the disc edition.

Use an isolated legacy environment if necessary
If the original release cannot be patched, a separate older Windows PC, dedicated offline installation, or virtual machine may preserve the environment it expects. Use a properly licensed Windows copy. Keep the legacy system offline unless networking is essential; if it is essential, use the narrowest network access possible. Do not use an old operating system for routine browsing, email, banking, or file sharing.
This is not guaranteed to work: a modern virtual machine may not expose a physical optical drive in a way the DRM accepts, and 3D performance or online activation may still fail. A separate physical machine can avoid some virtualization limits but requires appropriate hardware and maintenance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why restoring the SafeDisc driver is a risky last resort
Older online guides may suggest re-enabling or replacing secdrv.sys. Microsoft disabled the driver because of security vulnerabilities, so restoring it exposes the system to a known risk. A driver copied from another installation may be incompatible, tampered with, or unlawfully redistributed; test-signing or altered boot-security settings also weaken Windows protections. The method can vary by Windows 10 build and stop working after updates.

For those reasons, do not treat a driver-restoration recipe as a routine fix or use it on a primary internet-connected PC. Prefer a publisher patch, authorized DRM-free edition, or isolated legacy system. Microsoft’s security bulletin explains the driver-related update: MS15-097.
Avoid untrusted executables and “universal” fixes
Owning a disc does not make every downloaded replacement executable safe or lawful; legal rules vary by jurisdiction. Avoid unknown “No-CD” executables, cracked or repacked installers, torrents containing replacement files, universal-fix DLLs, and undocumented DRM emulators. Do not disable antivirus to run an untrusted patch. These files can contain malware, mismatch your game version, or alter the executable in ways that are difficult to undo.
If a community patch is the only remaining option, look for a known maintainer and public documentation or source code where available. Scan the file with VirusTotal or an equivalent service as an additional check, not a guarantee; back up the original files and create a restore point or full system backup. Use it only on a noncritical machine.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely issue | First action | What will not solve it | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| “Please insert original disc” | Disc authentication, unreadable media, or optical-drive trouble. | Test the disc and drive; identify the game edition and DRM. | Assuming every such prompt is SafeDisc or changing compatibility mode blindly. | Check for an exact-version official patch or a digital re-release. |
| Nothing happens after launch | Blocked SafeDisc driver, incompatible executable, or missing legacy dependency. | Check the exact release and its known DRM; try compatibility troubleshooting for ordinary application issues. | Administrator mode or DirectPlay as a universal DRM fix. | Patch the game, use an authorized re-release, or consider an isolated older system. |
| “This app can’t run on your PC” | Installer architecture or compatibility issue; older 16-bit installers can also be a problem, particularly on 64-bit Windows. | Check Windows architecture and the game’s official installation guidance. | Assuming a DRM driver is necessarily the cause. | Look for an official installer or patch, or use a suitable licensed legacy environment. |
| Online activation unavailable | SecuROM Product Activation or another publisher service may no longer be supported. | Check publisher support for a replacement activation method or updated build. | Compatibility mode or enabling DirectPlay. | Use an official DRM-free edition if available; otherwise the original activation may not be recoverable. |
| DirectPlay error | The game needs a legacy networking component. | Enable DirectPlay under Legacy Components in Windows Features. | Expecting DirectPlay to fix SafeDisc or SecuROM. | Use the game-specific DirectPlay troubleshooting steps. |
| Game launches, then crashes or displays incorrectly | Graphics API, resolution, codec, or game-engine compatibility rather than necessarily DRM. | Check the game’s patch level and title-specific compatibility guidance. | Changing DRM files without evidence that DRM caused the crash. | Apply a verified game-specific graphics or compatibility fix. |
Windows 10 is now an unsupported legacy platform
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 FAQ. A fix that gets an old game running should not be taken as a reason to keep an internet-facing Windows 10 PC indefinitely. If you retain a Windows 10 or older Windows installation for legacy games, isolate it from everyday online activity.
