Your weapons, items, and team will change from run to run, so adapt rather than chasing one fixed build.
Unlock Scholar and prepare for an expedition
Scholar is a Nightfarer included in The Forsaken Hollows DLC. To unlock the character, defeat Tricephalos, return to Roundtable Hold, and speak with the Iron Menial. Bandai Namco lists the DLC for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam; players who preordered it or own the Deluxe Edition may need to add the DLC content to their library manually. Use Analyse from a safe distance
Analyse uses Scholar’s monocle to study a target and leave spirit-symbol notes with varied effects. Observation takes time, so begin at medium distance and remain at mid-range when possible. Bandai Namco’s character guidance recommends this spacing; closer combat can interrupt the time you need to study a foe.
Analysis improves through sustained, varied observation: study multiple enemy specimens, discover special notes, and include allies in the analysis. The symbols and their effects linger, so look for a safe moment to begin rather than waiting until you are already under pressure. Treat Analyse as support setup, not a reason to stand still in a dangerous lane.

Time Communion around your team
Communion scatters pages from a taboo tome to thread enemies and allies. Damage dealt to one threaded enemy can affect the others; linked allies can be healed, and attacks from a threaded enemy can also damage the attacker. These properties make the skill most useful when your squad is ready to attack linked enemies together.
There is a positioning risk: the publisher notes that damage from a threaded enemy can snap the thread connecting an ally. Avoid treating Communion as protection or a guaranteed damage multiplier. Coordinate its timing with your teammates and be mindful of which enemies can reach linked allies. The effects and risk are described in the official Scholar character guide.
Make Bagcraft work by using items
Bagcraft increases Scholar’s carrying capacity and improves item categories independently as you use them. Each category advances on its own; level 2 strengthens that category’s effect, and level 3 adds a bonus effect. The publisher’s examples include better damage from throwing pots or daggers, stronger healing, and an additional Warming Stone effect.
Use the consumables your expedition provides instead of saving every item for an ideal moment that may never arrive. Choose what to carry and use according to the run: Bagcraft rewards active use, but the official examples do not establish a mandatory inventory or a single top damage item. Choose weapons and relics for the run
When you find equipment, weigh its fit with your team and the way you are using Scholar. Bandai Namco’s tactical advice points to weapons with FP-restoring passive effects as a way to support continued spell use. Weapon passives apply while the weapon is held and can stack with other benefits, but expedition rewards and available items change, so there is no established universal best weapon.
Relics are prepared at Roundtable Hold, while weapons and items are acquired during expeditions. The publisher’s gameplay guide emphasizes choosing priorities and synergies across weapons, passives, relics, and Nightfarer abilities—not following one fixed build. For Scholar, consider whether your choices support mid-range observation, useful consumables, spell use, and the way your squad can exploit Communion.
Coordinate support and help allies recover
Scholar’s value depends partly on what teammates do with the openings and links created by Analyse and Communion. Communicate when you are preparing to thread enemies, and leave room for allies to attack without exposing them to a linked enemy’s counterattack. The gameplay guide also explains a team rescue option: when an ally enters a near-death state, another player can revive them by attacking them. Repeated near-death states increase the death gauge; resting at a Site of Grace resets it.
Patch context for Scholar advice
Bandai Namco’s version 1.03.2 patch notes, dated January 15, 2026, record an adjustment to the distance criteria affecting Analyse progress against large enemies and a fix for a level 3 Bagcraft Warming Stone effect that had failed to apply to the user. Those are specific changes in that update, not a complete statement of current balance. The official site has since listed hotfix 1.03.5, but the available information here does not establish whether it changed Scholar behavior. Check the latest regulation version for current patch details in the version 1.03.2 notes.
