For the most reliable first setup, install the Beetle Saturn core, place a legally obtained Saturn BIOS in RetroArch’s configured System/BIOS directory, and load the game’s .cue file rather than an individual .bin track.
This guide covers Windows, Linux, and macOS desktop installations first. Android, iOS, console ports, Steam builds, and package-managed installations may use different paths or restrict core downloads.

1. Check RetroArch’s directories
Open RetroArch and go to:
Settings > Directory
Record these locations:
- System/BIOS — Saturn firmware.
- Core — installed Libretro cores.
- File Browser — the starting location for browsing content.
- Savefile — in-game save data.
- Savestate — emulator save states.
The displayed System/BIOS path is authoritative for your installation. Do not assume that a portable build, package-manager build, Steam build, or mobile installation uses the same folder as another version. RetroArch’s directory guidance is available in the Libretro documentation.
If a menu item is missing, check Settings > User Interface > Menu Item Visibility. Some builds hide the Core Downloader or other options.
2. Install a Saturn core
The common desktop path is:
Main Menu > Online Updater > Core Downloader > Beetle Saturn
Select Beetle Saturn. You can install Kronos as well if you want to compare cores.
If Core Downloader is missing:
- Enable it under
Settings > User Interface > Menu Item Visibility. - Check
Settings > Directory > Coreand make sure the directory is writable. - Check how RetroArch was installed. Some package-managed builds, including certain Ubuntu PPA installations, disable the in-app downloader and require cores to be installed through the distribution’s package manager.
- Restart RetroArch after installing a core or updating core information.
See Libretro’s core-installation guide for build-specific exceptions.
3. Add the Saturn BIOS
A BIOS is the Saturn’s system firmware—not the game itself. BIOS files normally belong in RetroArch’s configured System/BIOS directory, as explained in the RetroArch BIOS guide.
Beetle Saturn BIOS files
| Filename | Region/use | MD5 |
|---|---|---|
sega_101.bin |
Japanese Saturn BIOS; required for Japanese games according to the core documentation. | 85ec9ca47d8f6807718151cbcca8b964 |
mpr-17933.bin |
US/European Saturn BIOS; required for US and European games according to the core documentation. | 3240872c70984b6cbfda1586cab68dbe |
Place the correctly dumped file directly in the configured System/BIOS directory. Beetle Saturn also documents special cartridge firmware for titles such as The King of Fighters ’95 and Ultraman: Hikari no Kyojin Densetsu.
Kronos BIOS
Kronos documents this path and filename:
system/kronos/saturn_bios.bin
The documented MD5 is:
af5828fdff51384f99b3c4926be27762
Do not rename an incorrect BIOS into compliance. The filename and checksum help the core identify the file, but renaming does not change its contents. BIOS naming and placement are core-specific; do not assume Beetle Saturn and Kronos use interchangeable arrangements.

- ✔ Super sensitive buttons for precision control, Eight-way directional pad and six digital buttons. Play your favorite old school games with authentic retro feel. Arrowed D-pad, concave X and Y buttons, convex A and B buttons, rubber start and select buttons. Cord is approx. 5 ft. Long, providing a comfortable distance while playing.
- ✔ If you want to play S-N-E-S, N-E-S, PSX, Atari, Genesis, or any other types of this vintage of games... get this. You will not regret it. NOTE:Third party controller, not original S-N-E-S / N-E-S controller. But it works phenomenal with the Raspberry Pi game emulation and so on.
4. Organize the Saturn game files
Saturn games commonly contain a cue sheet and one or more track files:
Saturn/
└── Game Name/
├── Game Name.cue
├── Game Name (Track 01).bin
├── Game Name (Track 02).bin
└── ...
The .cue file describes the disc’s track layout, including data and audio tracks. Keep it together with every file it references.
A typical cue sheet contains a line such as:
FILE "foo.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE1/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00
The filename in the FILE line must match the actual track filename. Do not rename .bin files without also editing the cue sheet, separate files from their cue sheet, mix tracks from different dumps, or load a random track instead of the cue sheet.
For first-time troubleshooting, use an uncompressed, correctly dumped cue/bin set. Beetle Saturn documents support for .cue, .toc, .m3u, .ccd, and .chd; Kronos documents support for .cue, .iso, .ccd, .mds, .chd, and .zip. These are core-specific extension lists, not universal RetroArch rules. CHD can reduce the number of loose files, but converting a damaged or incomplete dump will not repair it.
5. Launch your first game
Direct loading is the best diagnostic test because it separates emulation problems from playlist database problems.
- Go to
Main Menu > Load Core. - Select Beetle Saturn.
- Choose
Main Menu > Load Content. - Browse to the game’s folder.
- Select the game’s
.cuefile.
If RetroArch asks which core to use, select Beetle Saturn. For Kronos, load the core first and then select the appropriate supported image, preferably the .cue for a cue/bin dump.
If the game does not launch, do not begin by changing graphics enhancements. Check the cue sheet, BIOS, selected core, and file permissions first.

6. Configure the controller
Open the in-game Quick Menu—commonly with F1 on a keyboard—and find the input or controls settings. Saturn controllers are not identical to modern gamepads:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Saturn Pad is the standard controller.
- Saturn 3D Pad is required by games designed around the analog controller.
- Some cores also expose devices such as the Saturn Wheel, Mouse, Mission Stick, Virtua Gun, or other specialized controllers.
- Multitap settings are available for compatible multiplayer games.
Saturn’s A, B, C, X, Y, and Z buttons are separate inputs. Test every face and shoulder button rather than assuming a modern controller’s default mapping is intuitive.
7. Save games safely
Saturn saving can involve several different mechanisms:
- In-game saves are created through the game’s own save menu.
- Save states are emulator snapshots and should not be your only long-term backup.
- Internal backup memory represents the Saturn’s built-in save memory.
- External cartridge backup memory may be relevant to certain games and core options.
Beetle Saturn documents save-related files including .bcr, .bkr, and .smpc. Kronos uses its own save directories and offers a “Share saves with beetle” option. Different cores may still handle saves differently.
- Use the game’s normal save system whenever possible.
- Back up RetroArch’s configured Savefile directory before changing cores.
- Do not switch cores mid-playthrough without checking save compatibility.
- Keep a separate backup of important saves and do not rely exclusively on save states.
8. Set up multi-disc games
For Beetle Saturn, place each disc’s cue sheet and referenced tracks together, then create a text file ending in .m3u:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGame Name.m3u
List one cue sheet per line:
Game Name (Disc 1).cue
Game Name (Disc 2).cue
Game Name (Disc 3).cue
Load the .m3u file instead of loading Disc 1’s cue sheet directly.
Beetle Saturn’s documented disc-swapping sequence is:

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- Open the virtual tray using Disk Cycle Tray Status.
- Change Disk Index to the required disc.
- Close the tray using Disk Cycle Tray Status.
- Return to the game and wait several seconds.
Some games handle disc changes differently and may return to the BIOS or title screen if the wrong procedure is used.
9. Add working games to a playlist
Once direct loading works, update RetroArch’s databases:
Main Menu > Online Updater > Update Databases
Main Menu > Online Updater > Update Core Info Files
Then use Main Menu > Import Content, or the equivalent playlist-import option in your build.
RetroArch’s strict scanner matches content against its database using information such as CRC checksums or disc serials. A valid game can therefore launch successfully but fail to appear in a playlist because it has a different filename, dump revision, or modified image. A loose or manual scan can add unmatched files, although metadata and thumbnails may be missing. See Libretro’s content-import guide.
Troubleshooting
“No Core” or no Saturn core appears
- Check
Main Menu > Load Core. - Enable Core Downloader under
Settings > User Interface > Menu Item Visibility. - Check whether your package-managed build installs cores separately.
- Confirm the path under
Settings > Directory > Core. - Make sure the core directory is writable and restart RetroArch.
“Failed to load content”
Check these in order:
- The correct Saturn core is loaded.
- You selected the
.cue,.chd, or another supported disc entry—not an individual track. - Every file named by the cue sheet exists.
- Names in the cue sheet match the actual filenames exactly.
- The dump is complete and not corrupt.
- The selected format is supported by that particular core.
- RetroArch can access the folder and its files.
Black screen or BIOS error
- Confirm the BIOS filename and checksum.
- Confirm that RetroArch is using the path shown under
Settings > Directory > System/BIOS. - Check the game’s region against the BIOS required by the selected core.
- For Kronos, check its documented
system/kronos/saturn_bios.binarrangement. - Do not assume that a BIOS that works with one core will work with another.
Missing audio tracks
The likely causes are an incomplete cue sheet, incorrect track filenames, loading the wrong file, or a damaged conversion. Kronos specifically warns that it does not support cue sheets referencing external WAV, MP3, OGG, FLAC, or APE audio files. Use a correctly dumped disc image with the required tracks represented in the supported format.
Slow performance or graphical glitches
- Restore core options to their defaults.
- Use automatic region and video-format detection.
- Disable resolution enhancements and other graphics enhancements.
- Test the same game with the other current Saturn core.
- Change one setting at a time and restart the core when an option requires it.
Beetle Saturn documents NTSC timing of about 59.83 FPS and PAL timing of about 49.92 FPS. Kronos documents 60 FPS for NTSC and 50 FPS for PAL. Kronos also exposes renderer, resolution, frameskip, SH-2 cache, mesh-rendering, and other options; its documentation notes potential issues involving threaded video and switching between windowed and fullscreen modes. Kronos’s OpenGL 4.3 requirement is a technical requirement, not a guarantee of smooth performance on every compatible GPU.
Recommended Free Tools
The game works but is missing from the playlist
This is usually a scanning or database-recognition issue, not proof that the game is unplayable. Load the content directly, then try a loose or manual scan after updating databases.
Multi-disc swapping fails
- Confirm the
.m3ulists the correct cue filenames. - Keep all cue sheets and referenced tracks in the expected locations.
- Load the
.m3u, not Disc 1’s cue sheet. - Open the tray before changing the disc index.
- Close the tray afterward and wait several seconds.
Saves disappear after changing cores
Beetle Saturn and Kronos can use different save formats and directories. Restore the previous core if necessary, back up the Savefile directory, and check whether Kronos’s save-sharing option applies to your Beetle Saturn save. Never migrate an important playthrough without a backup.
