What you need for Minecraft split screen on Xbox
- Minecraft Bedrock Edition: Bedrock is the console edition for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and console Bedrock supports split-screen. Minecraft’s edition guide explains the platform distinction.
- One compatible controller per player: each person joining needs a controller connected to the Xbox.
- A world to play in: the first player starts or loads the world, then additional players join from their controllers.
- Up to four local players: Minecraft’s feature page lists console split-screen for as many as four players at once. Minecraft: About Minecraft
How to join a split-screen world
- Launch Minecraft on your Xbox and have the first player start or load a world.
- Connect a controller for each additional player and make sure the Xbox recognizes it.
- Have each player follow the on-screen join prompt. The prompt indicates the button to press; the official instructions do not establish one universal button sequence.
- Repeat for each person joining, up to the four-player split-screen limit.
This is local multiplayer on one console. It is different from joining friends through Xbox network, a server, or a Realm.

Does Minecraft split screen on Xbox require Game Pass Core?
It depends on the world’s Multiplayer Game setting. Minecraft’s Xbox split-screen requirements say all players need an active Xbox Game Pass Core subscription when that setting is enabled. For a local-only session, leave the setting off if you do not want to enable online multiplayer. The subscription condition is tied to the toggle; it is not a blanket requirement for every couch co-op session. See Minecraft’s split-screen requirements.
Accounts and child permissions
Minecraft’s Xbox split-screen instructions say the host must be connected to a Microsoft account and guests may also sign in to Microsoft accounts. Account and multiplayer permissions matter particularly when online multiplayer is enabled; child accounts may need multiplayer permissions allowed by their account settings. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements describe console account and online access requirements.

- Check the controller: confirm the Xbox detects the extra controller, then try the join prompt again.
