How to Play Star Fox Games in Release Order

A current Star Fox release-order list, with the difference between public release chronology and story-focused play made clear.

For a release-order playthrough, start with Star Fox (1993), then follow the games by their first public release year through the 2026 Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2. This order includes remakes and companion games; it is not the same as the best-supported story-focused sequence. If your goal is to see the series as players encountered it, use the complete list below. If you mainly want the clearest run of story developments, choose the shorter story-focused route instead.

Star Fox games in release order

The years below are first public release years, not development dates or the dates of later ports. Exact launch dates can vary by region, so this year-based list avoids implying a single worldwide date. The sequence includes every distinct Star Fox-branded release identified here, including an update of an earlier game and a companion title. Those entries belong in a complete release history even though they are not all new story chapters.

Order Game First public release Platform Place in the series
1 Star Fox 1993 Super Nintendo / Super Famicom The original single-player 3D shooter.
2 Star Fox 64 1997 Nintendo 64 Known as Lylat Wars in Europe.
3 Star Fox Adventures 2002 GameCube An action-adventure turn in the series.
4 Star Fox: Assault 2005 GameCube A standalone series release following Adventures.
5 Star Fox Command 2006 Nintendo DS The next release after Assault in the core story-focused sequence.
6 Star Fox 64 3D 2011 Nintendo 3DS An update of Star Fox 64, rather than a new story chapter.
7 Star Fox Zero 2016 Wii U A later series release that revisits the Star Fox 64 premise.
8 Star Fox Guard 2016 Wii U A companion strategy game associated with Zero, not a required next story chapter.
9 Star Fox 2 2017 Not stated in the release-year reference Its first official public release was in 2017, despite its earlier development history.
10 Star Fox 2026 Nintendo Switch 2 A new version based on Star Fox 64, not a continuation of Command.

What each release adds to the chronology

1. Star Fox (1993). The Super Nintendo original is the starting point for a strict release-order run. Nintendo lists its Japanese release as February 21, 1993; that is a Japanese date, not a universal launch date. It is described as a single-player 3D shooter. Starting here answers the question “What did players get first?” rather than “Which game best introduces the story-focused core?”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Star Fox 64 (1997). The Nintendo 64 release is the next stop by first public release year. European players know it as Lylat Wars, so a European listing or conversation may use a different title for this entry. The naming difference does not make it a separate game in the chronology.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Star Fox Adventures (2002). This GameCube game belongs in the sequence even though it changes direction from the shooter identity readers may expect. It is an action-adventure entry. That genre shift is the main expectation to set before playing: a shooter-only list and a complete release-order list are not the same thing.

4. Star Fox: Assault (2005). The next GameCube release follows Adventures. It is a distinct release, not an update of an older title. It also appears in the supported story-focused core, between Adventures and Command.

5. Star Fox Command (2006). The Nintendo DS game is the next release after Assault and closes the four-game story-oriented sequence most useful to readers seeking connected developments: Star Fox 64 → Adventures → Assault → Command. It is not the newest entry in the overall release list; later games revisit earlier material or add a companion experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Star Fox 64 3D (2011). This Nintendo 3DS release is an update of Star Fox 64, as Nintendo describes it, rather than a new chapter that moves the core story forward. Put it here if you want the full public release chronology or want to compare versions of the 64 premise. If your goal is only new story developments, it is a reasonable optional skip.

7. Star Fox Zero (2016). The Wii U release revisits the Star Fox 64 premise. It is part of the later public release history, but it should not be treated as the next event after Command in the story-focused core. It is a separate release worth including when the aim is to follow the series by launch year.

8. Star Fox Guard (2016). This Wii U strategy title is associated with Zero. Nintendo described it as a companion title and reported that it and Zero launched in Europe on April 22, 2016. Both games share a year; listing Guard after Zero is a convenient ordering choice, not a claim that its events follow Zero. Treat it as optional if you want the main series story rather than every branded release.

9. Star Fox 2 (2017). This entry is the chronology’s most common trap. It was developed earlier, but its planned original release did not happen. Its first official public release was in 2017, so a release-order list places it after the 2016 games. Sorting by development history would answer a different question and would incorrectly move it ahead of games that players could actually buy or play earlier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Star Fox (2026). Nintendo announced this Nintendo Switch 2 release for June 25, 2026, and describes it as based on Star Fox 64. Nintendo calls it a cinematic take on that game, with overhauled character designs, revamped stage visuals, detailed cutscenes, voiced dialogue, and an orchestral soundtrack. It also includes a new 4-vs-4 Battle Mode. A Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch is listed as a separately sold compatible option, but it is not required. This release extends the public chronology; its relationship to 64 means it is not a continuation of Command.

Choose a route based on what you want to experience

For every distinct Star Fox-branded release

Use all ten entries in the table, in order. This is the most complete route if your goal is to see how the series’ public release history unfolded. It includes the updated version of 64, the companion Guard, and Star Fox 2 at the point when players could first officially play it—not where it would sit if sorted by development history.

This route is the best fit for a reader who wants the broadest historical picture and does not mind revisiting a premise. It also makes the distinctions visible: a distinct new release is not automatically a new story chapter, and a game associated with the series can be a companion rather than a required installment. The order is based on first public release years, so it is practical across regions without pretending that each title had one shared worldwide launch date.

For a shorter mainline release history

Play Star Fox → Star Fox 64 → Star Fox Adventures → Star Fox: Assault → Star Fox Command → Star Fox Zero → Star Fox (2026). This keeps the central standalone releases in public release order while leaving out the 64 update, the companion strategy game, and the late-official-release historical entry.

Choose this when you want a more focused series run but still want to experience the main standalone releases in release order. It is shorter than the complete route because it removes three kinds of detour: a version update, a companion game, and a game whose 2017 public release came long after its development period. It is still not a pure story-continuity route, because it includes Zero and the 2026 title, both of which revisit the 64 premise.

For the story-focused core

Play Star Fox 64 → Star Fox Adventures → Star Fox: Assault → Star Fox Command. This is a story-oriented sequence, not release order. The original SNES Star Fox retells the opening conflict, while Zero and the 2026 game revisit the 64 premise. If you mainly want new story beats, you can leave those repeat tellings—and the 64 update—out of your first run.

This route prioritizes the clearest supported core of story developments rather than every release. It begins with Star Fox 64, so it is not the right choice if your specific goal is to experience the series exactly as it became publicly available. Conversely, the complete release chronology may include more repeats and side material than a story-first player needs. Neither approach is universally “correct”: choose by whether your priority is historical release sequence, a shorter mainline sample, or story progression.

Why release order differs from story order

A release list answers, “When could players first play each game?” A story-focused route asks which games form the clearest sequence of story developments. These questions produce different starting points: release order begins with the 1993 SNES original, while the supported story-focused core begins with Star Fox 64.

The difference matters when a title is a retelling, update, companion game, or late public release. A strict release chronology counts each game at the point it reached players. A story route can group or omit titles based on whether they move the central sequence forward. Do not read “later release” as “later story event” in this series: 64 3D, Zero, and the 2026 Star Fox all relate to the 64 premise in ways that make their launch positions different from their story positions.

The biggest chronological trap is Star Fox 2. It was developed earlier, but its planned original release did not happen. Since it first became officially available in 2017, place it after the 2016 releases in a public release chronology. Playing it before Star Fox 64 would reflect development history, not release order. If you want the release order people actually experienced, use 2017, not the earlier development period, as its ordering point.

Two other entries can look like new chapters when they are better understood as revisits. Star Fox 64 3D is an update of Star Fox 64; Nintendo describes the 2026 Star Fox as based on that same game. They belong in a complete release history, but neither is necessary to move forward through the story-focused core. Zero also revisits the 64 premise. These titles can be valuable if your interest is how the same foundation was presented in later releases, but they are not substitutes for a sequence of new developments after Command.

What to expect from the genre changes and side entries

Star Fox Adventures

Keep it in release order, but adjust expectations if you are coming for a run of shooters: Adventures changes direction into action-adventure. Skipping it may suit someone interested only in the shooter-focused releases, but it would no longer be a complete release-order run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a choice about scope, not a correction to the chronology. The game’s different genre is precisely why readers may wonder whether it belongs. For a complete series history, it does: the release list follows the actual public sequence, not a genre filter. If the change sounds like a poor fit for what you want to play, choose the shorter shooter-oriented selection deliberately rather than treating Adventures as an error in the list.

Star Fox Guard

Treat Guard as an optional companion to Zero, not as an essential installment in the story sequence. Nintendo described it as a companion title and reported that it and Zero launched in Europe on April 22, 2016. The chronology above places it after Zero as a practical way to list the pair, not as a claim that it follows Zero in story continuity.

For a full release-history checklist, keep it; for a mainline story run, skip it without worrying that you have missed a required chapter. It is a strategy game associated with Zero, which is a useful distinction when planning a playthrough: “optional” here means it is not required for the story-focused route, not that it does not count as a Star Fox-branded release.

Star Fox 64 3D and the 2026 Star Fox

These are useful if your interest is in how the series reworks the 64 premise across releases. They are optional for a story-first run focused on new developments. The 2026 game is a distinct release on Switch 2, but its basis in 64 means it should not be read as the next story chapter after Command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction between “remake or retelling” and “new chapter” helps answer whether you need to play both. For a complete release chronology, include each at its year. For new story beats, the available story-focused sequence does not require them. If you are deciding between the older 3DS update and the new Switch 2 release, the facts established here support comparing their relationship to 64 and their release platforms, but not making claims about which version is better or what either currently costs.

How to use this order without assuming a platform is available

The release list identifies each game’s original platform; it does not establish which older games are currently sold, included in a subscription, or playable on a particular modern system in your region. Check your local Nintendo store or service catalog before planning a purchase or assuming that an original-platform release is available on current hardware. For the newest game, Nintendo’s stated platform is Nintendo Switch 2. The platform column is a historical guide, not a guarantee of present-day access.

Exact current availability for older entries was not established here, so avoid building a plan around an assumed re-release, subscription catalog, or store listing. The same caution applies to price: no current price or buying total is specified. Check the retailer or official store serving your region for current availability and cost before purchasing. The Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch is a separately sold compatible option for the 2026 game, not a required accessory; its listing does not mean that a controller purchase is part of the minimum requirements.

  1. Decide your scope. Choose the complete release list, the shorter mainline history, or the story-focused core above. This decision determines whether you include the update, companion game, and late official release.
  2. Check the version and platform before arranging access. In particular, do not confuse Star Fox 64 with its Nintendo 3DS update, or assume that an older game’s original platform description guarantees present-day availability.
  3. Keep remakes and companion entries in perspective. Play 64 3D for another release of the 64 premise and Guard for the associated companion strategy game; neither is necessary to follow the core story sequence.
  4. Place Star Fox 2 by its public release. Put it after the 2016 titles in release order, even though its development history is earlier. This avoids mixing a development chronology with the order players could first access the releases.
  5. Use years for cross-region order. The year-based chronology is more reliable for a general list than combining dates from different markets as though every game had one global launch day. Use a regional date only when the region is named: for example, Nintendo lists the original game’s Japanese date as February 21, 1993, and reported the European launch of Zero and Guard as April 22, 2016.
  6. Check current catalog and cost separately. Original platforms tell you where a game first released, not whether you can currently access it. Confirm regional store, service, and retailer details before committing to a purchase plan.
  7. Decide whether the 2026 release is a repeat visit or a new chapter for your purposes. Nintendo describes it as based on Star Fox 64, while also announcing new visual presentation and 4-vs-4 Battle Mode. Include it in the public release history; do not assume it continues Command.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to play Star Fox 2 before Star Fox 64?

No, not for release order. Star Fox 2 first became officially available in 2017, so it goes after the 2016 releases in this chronology. Its earlier development history does not change the order in which the public could first play the games. A story-focused run can also omit it because it is not part of the supported four-game core sequence listed above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I play Star Fox 64 3D after Star Fox 64?

Only if you want a complete release history or want to experience Nintendo’s 3DS update of Star Fox 64. It is a 2011 release, but it is not a new story chapter. For a shorter run centered on new developments, you can skip it.

Is Star Fox Guard required after Star Fox Zero?

No. Nintendo described Guard as a companion title associated with Zero. Include it to cover every distinct Star Fox-branded release; skip it for the story-focused core. Its position after Zero in a list is a convenient way to order two 2016 releases, not a statement about story continuity.

Why is Star Fox Adventures in the list if it is not a shooter?

Because the list is based on release history, not genre. Adventures is an action-adventure entry that released in 2002 for GameCube. Its genre change is worth knowing before you begin, but it does not remove the game from a complete release-order playthrough.

Is the 2026 Star Fox a sequel to Star Fox Command?

The available description does not frame it that way. Nintendo describes the Nintendo Switch 2 game as based on Star Fox 64. It is the newest release in the chronology and has new presentation plus a 4-vs-4 Battle Mode, but release date alone does not make it the next story event after Command.

What is the best order if I only want the main story?

Use Star Fox 64 → Star Fox Adventures → Star Fox: Assault → Star Fox Command for the supported story-focused core. If instead you want the main standalone releases in release order, use the shorter mainline list that starts with the 1993 original and includes Zero and the 2026 release.

Can I assume these games are available on a current console?

No. The platforms in the chronology are original release platforms, and current availability varies by game, region, and service. Check a local Nintendo store or service catalog before planning access. Nintendo states that the 2026 game is for Nintendo Switch 2; it also lists a separately sold compatible Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch, which is optional rather than required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Star Fox release order?

By first public release year: Star Fox (1993), Star Fox 64 (1997), Star Fox Adventures (2002), Star Fox: Assault (2005), Star Fox Command (2006), Star Fox 64 3D (2011), Star Fox Zero (2016), Star Fox Guard (2016), Star Fox 2 (2017), and Star Fox for Nintendo Switch 2 (2026).

Do I play Star Fox 2 before Star Fox 64?

The supported story-oriented sequence is Star Fox 64 → Star Fox Adventures → Star Fox: Assault → Star Fox Command. This differs from release order.

Is Star Fox Guard a main story game?

Nintendo described Guard as a companion strategy title associated with Star Fox Zero. It is optional for a story-focused run but belongs in a complete Star Fox-branded release list.

Is Star Fox Adventures a shooter?

No. It is an action-adventure entry, a genre change from the shooter-focused expectation some readers bring to the series.

Is the 2026 Star Fox a sequel to Command?

Nintendo describes the 2026 Nintendo Switch 2 game as based on Star Fox 64, so it should not be assumed to continue Command just because it is the newest release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need the Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch to play the 2026 game?

No. Nintendo lists it as a separately sold compatible option, not a required controller.

Are all of the older games currently available on modern hardware?

Current availability was not established for the older games. Check the Nintendo store or service catalog in your region; original platform listings do not guarantee present-day access.

The Bottom Line

For the fullest history, play all ten releases by first public year and keep Star Fox 2 in 2017, where it became officially available. For story developments, start with Star Fox 64 and continue through Adventures, Assault, and Command. Treat 64 3D and the 2026 game as revisits to the 64 premise, and Guard as an optional companion—not required steps in that story route.
