What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Yes—but Kodi usually does not run Steam games itself. Kodi acts as the living-room front end: it can launch Steam, an individual Steam shortcut, Lutris, or the Steam Link app. Steam remains responsible for installing games, authentication, controller profiles, cloud saves, compatibility, and actually running or streaming the game.
The best method depends on where Steam is installed. If Kodi and Steam are on the same capable Windows or Linux PC, launch Steam or Steam Big Picture from Kodi. If Kodi runs on a Raspberry Pi, Android TV device, Fire TV, or another low-powered client, launch Steam Link and stream games from a separate gaming PC.

Can Kodi play Steam games natively?
Generally, no. Kodi’s Games section is primarily designed for game add-ons, emulator cores, RetroPlayer-compatible content, and external game launchers. Kodi does not automatically import and manage a complete Steam library as a native game database.
Its game-management documentation describes launcher-style add-ons that can provide a library-like interface, but these may require configuration and some listed add-ons can be outdated. Treat the launcher as a bridge between Kodi and Steam, not as a replacement for Steam.

Steam continues to handle:
- Game ownership, installation, updates, and authentication
- Game-specific launch options and compatibility settings
- Steam Input and controller profiles
- Cloud saves and the Steam Overlay
- Proton and other compatibility tools on Linux
That distinction matters. “Playing Steam games from Kodi” normally means selecting a Kodi menu item that opens another application.
Method 1: Launch Steam or Big Picture from Kodi
This is the most dependable option when Kodi and Steam run on the same Windows or Linux computer.
What you need
- Kodi installed and working
- Steam installed for the same operating-system user who runs Kodi
- At least one game installed and tested in Steam
- A controller paired with the computer
- A Kodi launcher add-on or external-program launcher compatible with your Kodi version
Set it up
- Test Steam outside Kodi. Sign in, launch the game, and confirm that the controller works. Fix Steam or game problems before adding Kodi to the chain.
- Identify a Steam launcher. Use Steam itself, Steam Big Picture, an existing desktop shortcut, or a Linux
.desktoplauncher. Do not assume that a fixed Steam installation path applies to every system. - Install a maintained Kodi launcher. Kodi’s game-management documentation mentions launcher systems such as Advanced Emulator Launcher, but availability and compatibility vary by Kodi release, operating system, and repository. Prefer the official Kodi repository or a clearly maintained source. Avoid abandoned repositories and bundled unofficial builds.
- Create a launcher entry. In the add-on, create a new external-application entry and select Steam, Steam Big Picture, or an operating-system shortcut. Give it a clear name such as Steam Big Picture.
- Optionally add artwork. Artwork is not required. A simple text entry is often more reliable than scraping metadata for an external application.
- Launch it from Kodi. Kodi should open Steam or move it to the foreground. Select the game in Steam and launch it normally.
Exact menu names vary with Kodi’s major version, skin, operating system, and launcher add-on. A path such as Add-ons > Program add-ons > Steam Launcher is not guaranteed to exist in a current installation.
Why launch Big Picture instead of a game directly?
Big Picture gives you Steam’s controller-focused interface, library, downloads, Steam Input settings, and game launch handling. It is usually the best choice when the computer is connected to a television and you want to browse more than one game.
The trade-off is that Kodi goes into the background and may not immediately regain focus when the game exits. Full-screen games can also switch resolution, refresh rate, display, or audio output.

Method 2: Add individual Steam games to Kodi
If you want a separate Kodi menu item for each game, create one launcher entry per title.
The safest approach is to use a Steam-created desktop shortcut or another shortcut generated by Steam. This lets Steam retain the game’s App ID, launch options, compatibility configuration, and Proton settings rather than duplicating those details in Kodi.

- Launch the game normally from Steam and confirm that it works.
- Create or locate its Steam shortcut.
- In your Kodi launcher add-on, create a new external-program entry.
- Select the shortcut rather than guessing at undocumented Steam command-line arguments.
- Give the entry the game’s name and optionally assign artwork.
- Launch it from Kodi and confirm that Steam opens the correct title.
Steam also supports adding non-Steam games to its own library, as described in its official support documentation. That is useful for keeping launch settings in Steam, but it does not create native Steam integration inside Kodi.
Do not expect this arrangement to automatically synchronize your Steam library, achievements, screenshots, playtime, downloads, or Steam Input profiles into Kodi. Kodi is displaying launcher entries; Steam remains the library manager.
Method 3: Use Steam Link from a Kodi media center
Use this method when Kodi runs on a device that cannot run the Windows or Linux Steam client. The game runs on a separate host PC, while the Kodi device displays the streamed video and audio and sends controller input back to the host.

Steam’s official Remote Play page lists Steam Link availability for platforms including Windows, Linux, macOS, Android/Android TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, and Raspberry Pi 3 through 5. Availability can vary by device model and app store. Raspberry Pi support means Steam Link streaming—not native execution of modern PC Steam games.

- A gaming PC with Steam installed, signed in, awake, and running
- A Steam Link app or compatible Steam Link client on the Kodi device
- A controller connected to the client device
- Both devices on the same local network for initial pairing
- Preferably Ethernet for the host and Ethernet or strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the client
Pair Steam Link with the host
- Install the official Steam Link app for the Kodi device’s underlying platform, if available.
- Open Steam on the host PC and make sure Remote Play is available in Steam’s settings.
- Open Steam Link on the client and select the host PC when it appears.
- Enter the pairing PIN on the host when prompted.
- Pair or reconnect the controller to the client device.
- Run Steam Link’s network test.
- Launch Steam or a game through Steam Link.
To make the experience feel integrated, add the Steam Link application itself to Kodi using the same kind of external-program launcher used for Steam. Kodi does not become a Steam Link receiver merely because Kodi is installed; the underlying device still needs a supported Steam Link client or separately configured integration.
What affects streaming quality?
Remote Play sends encoded video and audio from the host and returns controller input over the network. Latency and image quality therefore depend on the network, host performance, client decoding, game frame times, and selected streaming settings.
- Connect the host to the router by Ethernet where possible.
- Use Ethernet or strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the client.
- Test at 1080p before increasing resolution.
- Lower Steam Link streaming quality or bitrate if the picture stutters.
- Do not judge streaming performance from Kodi menus; test an actual game.
Some games, anti-cheat systems, launchers, desktop prompts, HDR modes, and controller setups may behave poorly when streamed. Remote Play is convenient, but it cannot guarantee that every Steam game will work perfectly.
Linux: Kodi with Lutris
Linux users who manage games through Steam, Wine, Proton, and other sources may prefer Lutris as the launch layer. Kodi’s game-add-on documentation identifies Lutris integration as a GNU/Linux option, and the Lutris project wiki documents running Lutris games from Kodi with its Kodi add-on.

- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
- Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
- Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
- Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.
This is not native Steam support in Kodi. The chain is Kodi → Lutris → Steam or another game runner.
Package format matters. Steam and Lutris may be installed from a distribution package, Flatpak, or another source. The Kodi launcher needs permission to execute the selected file or desktop entry, and a hard-coded path may break when the application is installed somewhere else. A Linux .desktop launcher is often more portable than manually entering an executable path, but permissions and display-server behavior still matter.
Wayland, X11, gamescope, audio-session routing, and window focus can all affect whether Kodi returns cleanly after a game exits. Lutris is unnecessary complexity for a Windows user who only wants to launch Steam, but it can be useful for a Linux system with a mixed game library.
Steam Deck: usually use the reverse workflow
Steam Deck is a special case because Steam is already the primary launcher. The usual arrangement is to add Kodi to Steam as a non-Steam game, then launch Kodi from Steam Gaming Mode—not to use Kodi as the primary way to launch Steam games.
Kodi’s Steam Deck documentation describes adding Kodi through Desktop Mode:
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Open Steam.
- Select Add a Game > Add a Non-Steam Game…
- Browse to the Kodi launcher script or application.
- Add it to Steam and rename the entry to Kodi.
- Leave Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool unchecked for that Kodi entry.
The documentation’s example uses a custom script for a development build. Do not copy that script blindly to a regular Flatpak installation; the correct launch mechanism depends on how Kodi was installed. Once Kodi is added, exit Kodi to return to Steam Gaming Mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controller setup: keep the layers separate
Test controllers in this order:
- Pair the controller with the operating system or Steam Link client.
- Confirm that Steam detects it.
- Confirm that the game detects it.
- Only then launch the game through Kodi.
- If it fails only through Kodi, determine which application has focus or exclusive control.
Kodi has its own gamepad and keymap system, while Steam has Steam Input. These are separate layers. Kodi’s keymap documentation describes actions such as RunAddon(id), but changing a Kodi keymap does not configure Steam Input.
Common causes of controller problems include Kodi retaining focus, Steam Input being disabled for a game, two remapping tools running simultaneously, Bluetooth reconnecting to another device, and a game requiring keyboard and mouse input during its launcher or first-run setup. For the most predictable living-room setup, use the controller to navigate Big Picture or Steam Link and let Steam handle game-specific mappings.
Troubleshooting
Kodi launches nothing
- Verify the executable, shortcut, or
.desktoppath. - On Linux, check execute permissions.
- Confirm that the launcher add-on supports your Kodi version.
- Run the same shortcut directly from the operating system.
- Check whether Kodi runs under a different user.
- Quote paths containing spaces correctly, or use a shortcut instead.
- Make sure the launcher is configured to start an executable rather than browse to a folder.
Start with one simple entry for Steam itself. If that works, add individual games later.
Steam opens, but the game does not
- Launch the game directly from Steam first.
- Wait for Steam to finish signing in or updating.
- Look for a game launcher or anti-cheat prompt behind another window.
- Check that the game is installed in the library associated with the signed-in account.
- Keep game-specific launch options and compatibility settings inside Steam.
Steam Link cannot find the host
- Put both devices on the same local network.
- Make sure Steam is running and the host is awake.
- Check firewall permissions for Steam and Steam Link.
- Disable guest-network isolation and test without a VPN.
- Restart Steam Link and Steam, then try pairing again.
The picture is blurry or laggy
- Connect the host to the router by Ethernet.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet for the client.
- Lower streaming resolution or quality.
- Test at 1080p first.
- Check whether the host is struggling to encode video or the game has unstable frame times.
Kodi does not return after the game exits
Steam or the game may still be running, the launcher may be waiting for a child process, or the game may have changed display mode. Try the operating system’s task switcher, close Steam if appropriate, use borderless-windowed mode, or configure the launcher not to wait for the launched process. A dedicated script can provide more control on Linux, but it must match the installed application and display environment.
Audio stops or switches devices
Check the operating-system default output, Steam Link’s audio settings, and the HDMI or AV-receiver connection. On Linux, PipeWire or PulseAudio session routing may change when a game enters full screen. Set the desired output before launching and keep the HDMI path consistent.
Which method should you choose?
| Requirement | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Games run on the same powerful PC as Kodi | Launch Steam locally from Kodi |
| You want Steam’s controller interface and library | Launch Steam Big Picture |
| You want one Kodi item per game | Use Steam-generated shortcuts in an external launcher |
| Kodi runs on Raspberry Pi or Android TV | Use Steam Link/Remote Play |
| Linux has Steam, Wine, and other game sources | Consider Lutris with its Kodi integration |
| You use a Steam Deck | Add Kodi to Steam instead |
| You want maximum compatibility | Run games directly through Steam on the host PC |
| You want the simplest setup | Add one Steam or Steam Link entry to Kodi |
Bottom line
Use Kodi as the front end and leave game management to Steam. On a capable shared PC, add a launcher entry for Steam Big Picture or Steam shortcuts. On a weaker TV-connected device, add Steam Link and stream from a separate computer. Linux users with mixed libraries can put Lutris between Kodi and their games.
This approach gives you a unified media-center interface without pretending that Kodi provides native Steam-library management. The more you need achievements, cloud saves, controller profiles, updates, and compatibility handling, the more important it is to keep Steam as the primary game interface.
