You can play some Steam games without an internet connection, but you cannot skip Steam authentication when the client asks you to log in. Sign in online first, prepare the client and game, then switch Steam to Offline Mode. This requires a Steam account and works only for games that support offline play.
Can you play Steam games without logging in?
Not if Steam is asking you to authenticate. Steam Support says there is no supported way to bypass a login prompt that requires credentials; reconnect and sign in before you go offline. Offline Mode is for playing eligible games after prior authentication, not for using Steam without an account. Steam’s Offline Mode guide explains the requirement.
If you are trying to play during travel or an internet outage, set up Offline Mode while you still have a connection.
How to prepare Steam Offline Mode on PC
- Connect to the internet and sign in to the Steam account that owns the game or has authorized access to it.
- On the login window, select Remember me. In Steam settings, make sure Don’t save account credentials on this computer is not selected.
- Let Steam finish updating. Confirm the game is fully downloaded and up to date.
- Launch the game once while online. This gives the game a chance to complete first-run setup, activation, or launcher requirements. Then quit the game.
- In the Steam client, select Steam > Go Offline. If prompted, restart the client in Offline Mode.
These menu steps are for Steam’s PC client; interface details can differ across platforms or client versions. Steam’s Offline Mode instructions cover the PC setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Which approach fits your game?
| Option | Account access | What must be true |
|---|---|---|
| Offline Mode | Sign in to the account that owns or can access the game, then prepare it online. | The game must support offline play and not depend on an active connection or incompatible external launcher. |
| Steam Families | Each person uses their own Steam account and must belong to the Steam Family with access to the shared title. | The title must be eligible for Family Sharing; Steam says eligible shared games can be played offline. |
Neither option bypasses login. Offline Mode is for your account’s prepared games; Steam Families is the supported way to share eligible games across accounts. Steam Families’ guide and FAQ list sharing rules and exclusions.
Why might a game still fail to start offline?
- The game needs a live connection. Some games require an active internet connection or an external launcher that cannot operate offline. Preparing the game online does not remove that requirement.
- It has not completed first-run setup. Launching once online can resolve installation, activation, or launcher steps, but it cannot make an always-online game work without a connection.
- Steam or the game needs an update. Steam notes that if a game shows “100% – Ready” but cannot start offline, the client or game files may need updating. Reconnect, update Steam and the game, then try again.
- Steam asks for credentials. There is no offline bypass. Reconnect and authenticate, then select Go Offline before disconnecting.
- Saved Offline Mode information was lost. Steam warns that stored information is needed for Offline Mode and may be lost if the client is force-quit or the computer shuts down improperly. Close Steam normally before shutting down.
What changes while Steam is offline?
Steam features that require a connection will be unavailable, and Steam and game updates will wait until you reconnect. To leave Offline Mode and receive updates, connect to the internet and sign in online.

How Steam Families affects offline play
Steam Families replaced the earlier Family Sharing and Family View features. A family can include up to six members, and each person uses their own account; never share your password to give someone access to your library. Offline play applies only to shared games that support Family Sharing.
Not every game is shareable. Steam lists exclusions that include titles requiring certain third-party accounts, keys, or subscriptions; publisher restrictions; regional or operating-system limits; private games; and some free-to-play games or downloadable content. Saved-game behavior depends on the game, while achievements are associated with each player’s own account. Check Steam Families’ current eligibility guidance for a particular title.
