For a custom-rule session, open Online → Smash → Battle Arenas and use the arena controls shown in-game to create or join a room. Before you start, each player needs an internet connection, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the same version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Choose Quickplay instead if you want matchmaking or two people on one console to play online together.
What you need before playing online
- Nintendo Switch Online: Each player needs a Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo identifies the service as paid and lists Super Smash Bros. Ultimate among the games that require it for online features. See Nintendo Switch Online.
- Internet access: Connect each console to the internet. A stable connection helps avoid interruptions during a match.
- Matching game versions: Nintendo says all players must use the same software version to play together. Its update page lists Ver. 13.0.5, released September 1, 2026; check the update menu on each console because the latest version can change. Follow Nintendo’s update instructions.
How to create or join an online match
- Start Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and choose Online from the main menu. Acknowledge the online-play notice if it appears.
- Choose Smash.
- Select Battle Arenas for a custom-rule session. Use the current in-game options to create an arena or join one, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- Select your controller and fighter, then choose Ready to Fight when prompted.
Nintendo’s public setup guide confirms the Battle Arenas create-or-join route, but does not specify a universal friend-specific password, room code, or invitation sequence. Use the access and search controls displayed in your current game rather than assuming a code is required. Local Wireless is a separate mode, not the online arena route. See Nintendo’s multiplayer setup guide.
Battle Arenas or Quickplay?
| Mode | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Battle Arenas | Friends who want custom rules or an arena to create or join | Set up or enter an arena using the available in-game controls. |
| Quickplay | Matchmaking, or two players sharing one console | Enters matchmaking. Nintendo says Co-op, with two players on one console, is available in Quickplay battles only. |
Can two people play online from one Switch?
Yes, in Quickplay Co-op. Nintendo’s setup guide describes online play as one to two players per console, while the product listing describes online play as two to four players overall. These figures have different scopes: the first is a per-console count and the second is the listed total. The guide does not say that two players sharing a console can join a Battle Arena together. See the Nintendo game listing for its overall online-player count.
Which controllers can you use?
Nintendo lists Joy-Con, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, and Nintendo Switch/GameCube controller options in its setup guide. A wired GameCube controller requires a GameCube Controller Adapter. You do not need to buy an accessory if you already have a supported controller that suits your setup.

If you cannot enter an online battle
- Check that the console is connected to the internet and that the connection is stable.
- Confirm that each player has updated the game to the same version.
- If the message “You Cannot Play Online Battles Right Now” appears, Nintendo says the connection could not continuously send or receive data. Slow or unstable internet, wireless interference, or unresponsive networking equipment may contribute.
