You can play The Elder Scrolls: Arena on a modern Windows PC using Bethesda’s Windows download or the Steam version. Bethesda’s package includes DOSBox and separate windowed and full-screen launch options, so you usually do not need to install DOSBox separately.
Get Arena from Bethesda or Steam
Bethesda offers the full game from its official Arena page. Alternatively, Steam lists The Elder Scrolls: Arena as Free to Play (checked October 7, 2026). The available sources do not establish a gameplay or compatibility difference between these downloads.
Install and launch the Windows version

Choose one of the supplied launch options: Bethesda’s installation includes a batch file for full-screen play and another for windowed play. Try the other option if your first choice behaves poorly; neither is documented as universally more compatible.

Does Arena require a separate DOSBox installation?
No—not for Bethesda’s Windows package. Arena is a DOS game, and Bethesda bundles DOSBox with its Windows installation. Bethesda says the default configuration works with the majority of hardware setups, which is not a guarantee for every current PC.
Bethesda’s support page also states, “Bethesda Softworks does not provide support for this program.” It directs users to DOSBox documentation for emulator-related help: Does DOSBox need to be configured prior to running Daggerfall or Arena?

If the problem appears to involve DOSBox, consult its documentation. The DOSBoxWiki Arena page lists community configuration ideas, including cycle and memory adjustments. These are suggestions, not official Bethesda fixes or guaranteed solutions.
