It works on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. A separate Switch 2 edition is announced for November 5, 2026, but is not yet available.
Play it now on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
Nintendo lists Ocarina of Time in its Nintendo 64 Classics catalog. To access it, you need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership; the standard membership tier does not provide this access. Nintendo says classic games require an active membership. You can play offline, but the console must connect to the internet at least once every seven days to verify membership. - On your Switch or Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop and find the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics app.
- Download the app and make sure the Nintendo Account you use has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Open the app and select The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time from the available games.
Nintendo describes save-anytime functionality and customizable controls for the N64 classics on Switch and Switch 2. A wireless Nintendo 64 controller is an optional accessory listed for members in Australia; a standard compatible controller is also an option. Check your regional Nintendo store for local availability and pricing.
Should you wait for the Switch 2 edition?
Nintendo’s US listing announces a separate Switch 2 edition for November 5, 2026, including a physical edition. It is forthcoming as of October 7, 2026, so it is not a way to play today. Nintendo describes rebuilt visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music, jumping and dashing, and modern camera controls. If you want to start now, use the N64 Classics version; if you specifically want the announced presentation and control changes, wait until the stated release date and check the listing for updates.
Other legitimate ways to play
Nintendo 3DS
Ocarina of Time 3D is a Nintendo 3DS family release with updated 3D visuals, touch-based inventory and motion controls. New digital purchases on the 3DS eShop ended March 27, 2023. This route is therefore for people who already own the game or find a legitimate used physical copy, rather than a new eShop purchase. Nintendo’s 3DS game page describes the edition, and its eShop closure information explains the end of purchases.
Original Nintendo 64
The original release is for Nintendo 64. You can play it with an N64 console and a legitimate cartridge, if you own them or can find them. Nintendo’s official listing identifies the platform but does not establish current cartridge stock or used-market prices; availability varies by seller and location.
Nintendo UK also lists historic Wii and Wii U releases. Because purchases on the Wii U and 3DS eShops have ended, those are legacy options for people who already have access to the games, not straightforward new purchases. See Nintendo UK’s Ocarina of Time page.

For most people with a Switch or Switch 2 who want to play immediately, the N64 Classics library is the direct route. The key trade-off is ongoing membership access; the other options depend on owning older hardware and a copy, or waiting for the announced Switch 2 release.
