If you’re following the Zelda timeline, play The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons first, then Oracle of Ages. For a casual playthrough, either game can come first: each has its own setting and self-contained story. If you plan to play both, finish the first game and use its password in the second to connect the adventures.
Which Oracle game should you play first?
| What matters to you | Recommended first game | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Following the timeline | Oracle of Seasons | Nintendo Life reports that Hyrule Historia places Seasons before Ages. This is the timeline-based sequence, not a requirement for understanding the games. Source |
| Choosing by play style | Seasons for more combat emphasis; Ages for more puzzle emphasis | Nintendo Life characterizes the games this way. It is a broad comparison, not an official Nintendo difficulty ranking. Source |
| Playing only one game for now | Either | Nintendo describes each as a distinct, self-contained story. You do not need to play one before the other to follow its central adventure. Source |
What’s different about Ages and Seasons?
Oracle of Ages: time travel and puzzles
In Oracle of Ages, Link sets out to rescue Nayru in Labrynna. The Harp of Ages lets him travel through time, and changes in one era can affect the other—for example, moving an obstacle in the past can alter a river in the present, while seeds planted long ago can grow into trees and vines later. Oracle of Seasons: changing the world and fighting
In Oracle of Seasons, Link tries to rescue Din in Holodrum. The Rod of Seasons changes the world’s seasons to solve obstacles: spring can make a flower grow large enough to lift Link, while winter can freeze a lake so he can cross it. Nintendo Life describes this entry as more combat-focused than Ages; that is a play-style shorthand, not a claim that one game is objectively harder. How to link the two games
- Complete either Oracle of Ages or Oracle of Seasons.
- Keep the password you receive after beating the game.
- Enter that password in the other game when prompted to play in linked mode.
Nintendo says linking can unlock certain items, make characters remember earlier actions, and expand story elements. The password connects the adventures; it does not make either game inaccessible until you have played the other, nor does it require a particular first-game choice.
