You can play the original P.T. on a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer with the unofficial PT-PC port, but the installer is not a copy of the game. You must provide compatible files from your own P.T. copy. The project rebuilds the game code for PC and loads the original levels, models, textures, sounds, scripts, and cutscenes at runtime.
A microphone is optional. PT-PC documents a keyboard/controller substitute for the sequence that listens for the voice trigger “Jack.” The practical order is therefore: confirm that your computer meets the Vulkan and operating-system requirements, prepare a compatible game dump, download the current release from the project’s GitHub Releases page, install it by selecting that dump, and then configure the trigger method you want to use.

What PT-PC is—and what it is not
P.T. was a PlayStation 4 playable teaser associated with the cancelled Silent Hills project. It appeared on PlayStation Network in 2014 and was delisted in early 2015, according to PC Gamer. There has never been an official PC release from Konami or Kojima Productions.

The project describes support for the complete teaser, including the voice-related sequence. That is the developer’s description of the project’s scope, rather than a claim of independent testing by this article.
Developer Lorean Xavier told PC Gamer: “The idea that something so influential could eventually become practically unplayable never sat right with me.” That explains the project’s focus on bringing the original assets and behavior to a computer instead of making another game inspired by P.T..
What you need before installing
Check every item in this table before downloading. Support and optional graphics features can change between releases, so use the current README and release notes as the final authority for your build.

Optional graphics features are not universal
Ray-traced options require Vulkan ray queries and are not available on macOS. DLSS requires GeForce RTX hardware. FSR and XeSS have their own documented hardware and platform availability. Do not assume that a setting shown in a guide or screenshot will appear on every operating system or GPU; check the release’s feature notes and disable options your hardware cannot expose.
The original-files requirement
PT-PC cannot be installed as a standalone download. The project expects a compatible copy of the game supplied by the player as either a recognized game folder or a supported decrypted fake PKG. The installer checks the input and refuses files that are encrypted retail or store PKGs. It does not decrypt Sony-encrypted material.
The documentation describes support for dumped or fake-PKG releases with US, European, and Japanese title IDs. The developer says the US release is the one tested by the project, so a different region may install with a notice or may expose an issue that is not present in the tested version. A regional note from the installer is not evidence that the underlying files are damaged; read the current project instructions for that release.
These are technical requirements, not a blanket legal answer about copying, retaining, or extracting game files. The sources do not establish one universal rule for every country or every method. Use a copy you are entitled to use and follow the law that applies where you live. Do not download someone else’s P.T. files, and do not treat the PT-PC installer as a source of the original assets.

Download the correct PT-PC release

Open the project’s official GitHub repository and read the current README before choosing a file. The repository is the primary source for supported operating systems, graphics features, input options, and changes between versions.

Open the repository’s GitHub Releases page and select the release appropriate to your operating system. Windows and Linux users can use the documented installer; portable downloads are also provided for users who prefer not to use the installer.

On macOS, download the archive for your processor: Apple silicon or Intel. The project’s Intel caveat matters if you are relying on an Intel Mac, because the developer has not run that build on Intel hardware.

Keep the game dump available locally before launching the installer. You can point the installer at the dump folder or at a supported fake PKG when prompted.

Install PT-PC on Windows or Linux

Confirm that your GPU driver reports Vulkan 1.3 support. A computer that starts other Vulkan applications is not automatically guaranteed to meet every PT-PC feature requirement, so check the driver and hardware documentation if the project reports a Vulkan error.

Run the Windows or Linux installer downloaded from the project’s release page.

When the installer asks for game data, select the compatible dump folder or supported decrypted fake PKG. Do not select an encrypted retail/store PKG; the installer is designed to reject it and does not perform decryption.

Let the installer validate that the input is recognized as P.T. If it reports that the content is not P.T., recheck that you selected the game’s root folder or the supported package itself rather than a parent directory, archive, or unrelated PS4 title.

Finish the installation and launch PT-PC from the installed shortcut or executable. If you chose a portable build, follow the README’s portable-launch instructions and keep the program and its supporting files together.
Install PT-PC on macOS

Verify that the Mac runs macOS 14 or newer and that it is an Apple silicon or Intel model supported by the selected archive.

Download the matching Apple silicon or Intel release archive from GitHub Releases and extract it as described in the current README.

Launch the application and select your compatible P.T. dump when the program requests the game data.

If macOS blocks the unsigned application, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, look for the notice about the blocked app, and choose the option to allow it. Then launch the app again. The exact wording can vary by macOS version.

Remember that macOS uses MoltenVK to translate Vulkan calls to Metal. Ray-traced features that require Vulkan ray queries are not available on this platform, even when the base port runs correctly.

Set up the microphone—or skip it
The original voice interaction listens for “Jack.” PT-PC documents a way to trigger the same event without buying or connecting a microphone, which is useful on a desktop without an audio input or when the game is being played in a noisy room.

Launch the game and open PC Sound settings.

Enable Assign J / L2 + R2 for the microphone trigger.

When the voice-triggered prompt appears, press the J key on a keyboard, or press both controller triggers (L2 and R2) together.
If you prefer the original style of interaction, connect any functioning PC microphone and leave the workaround disabled. The project does not require a particular microphone model, and its documentation does not establish a performance advantage for one type of microphone.
First-launch checks and graphics choices
Confirm that the game data loaded
A successful installation should proceed into the teaser using the assets supplied during setup. If the installer accepted a folder but the launch fails immediately, return to the README and verify that the selected directory is the recognized dump root, not a folder one level above or below it. The project’s validation is intended to identify P.T. content; it is not a tool for converting an arbitrary PS4 package.
Start with conservative rendering settings
Use the default renderer settings on the first launch. Once the teaser starts, change one graphics option at a time so that a driver or feature problem can be identified. Vulkan 1.3 support is mandatory for the base port; ray tracing, upscaling, and other enhancements are optional.

- DLSS is documented for GeForce RTX hardware.
- FSR and XeSS have separate documented availability requirements.
- Ray-traced options require Vulkan ray queries and are unavailable on macOS.
- A feature appearing in the configuration interface does not mean that every supported operating system can use it.
The project documentation is the appropriate place to confirm the exact combination of GPU, driver, and release needed for an optional feature. No reliable performance figure is established by the available sources, so do not use an advertised setting as a promise of a particular frame rate.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
“Encrypted retail PKG” or decryption error
This is expected when the selected file is a Sony-encrypted retail or store package. PT-PC’s installer refuses that format and does not decrypt it. Use a compatible decrypted dump or fake PKG that the project’s current documentation recognizes, and follow the applicable rules for obtaining and using your own files.
“Not recognized as P.T.”
Check the selected path and the release’s regional support. The installer may be pointed at the wrong directory, an incomplete dump, or a package from another title. The project documents US, EU, and Japanese title-ID support, with the US version identified as the developer-tested release. If a regional version installs with a note, keep that note in mind when reporting a problem.
Vulkan initialization failure
Confirm that the operating system is supported, the GPU driver is current enough to expose Vulkan 1.3, and the application is running on the intended GPU rather than an older integrated adapter. On macOS, check that you selected the correct Apple silicon or Intel build and remember that the Vulkan layer is MoltenVK.

Ray-traced features need Vulkan ray queries. They are not available on macOS, regardless of the Mac’s general Vulkan compatibility. On Windows or Linux, verify the GPU and driver requirements in the current release documentation before treating the missing option as an installation failure.
The voice prompt does not respond
Use the documented fallback: in PC Sound, enable Assign J / L2 + R2 for the microphone trigger, then press J or both controller triggers when the prompt appears. If you are using a microphone, check that the operating system has granted the game access to the selected input device and that the device is not muted.
macOS will not open the app
macOS can quarantine an unsigned application. Follow the allow-app control in System Settings → Privacy & Security, then reopen the application. If the problem persists, verify that the archive matches the Mac’s processor and that the operating system is macOS 14 or newer.
How this differs from older P.T. recreations
Earlier fan projects recreated the look or atmosphere of P.T. in other engines. PT-PC’s stated design is different: it rebuilds the game logic for PC and reads the original levels, models, textures, sounds, scripts, and cutscenes from the player’s files. PC Gamer described developer Lorean Xavier’s goal as preserving the original assets, sounds, animations, and behavior.

That table describes the documented distinctions, not a comparative performance test. PT-PC’s file dependency and supported features are project claims; no source here establishes that it is superior in every scene to another way of playing.
Keep the installation maintainable
- Keep the dump separate from the program. Store the original game data in a location you can identify again if you reinstall or move to a portable build.
- Read the README after updates. Operating-system support, installer validation, regional handling, and optional graphics features are version-sensitive.
- Record your working settings. Note whether you use a microphone, the keyboard/controller trigger, and any upscaling or ray-tracing options. This makes it easier to restore a known-good setup after a driver change.
- Do not replace rejected files with random downloads. A package rejection means the format is outside the installer’s supported input, not that an unverified download is an appropriate fix.
Bottom line
PT-PC is the documented route to playing the original P.T. experience on a modern computer, provided you already have compatible game files. Install the current release for Windows, Linux, or macOS, supply a recognized dump or decrypted fake PKG, and meet the Vulkan 1.3 requirement. You do not need a microphone: enable the PC Sound trigger assignment and use J or L2 plus R2 for the voice event. Treat the project as an unofficial fan port, keep its regional and platform caveats in mind, and rely on the current README for release-specific instructions.
