The Outlast Trials supports solo play and co-op parties of up to four. In regular co-op, there are no fixed classes to assign: share temporary jobs, communicate immediate dangers, and adapt your route to the layout and items in each Trial. If a teammate falls, co-op players can revive them with a Syringe found in a glass case.
How to start co-op with friends
The game can be played solo or with a party of up to four, according to the Epic Games Store survival guide. Red Barrels’ March 5, 2024 release notes said cross-play was supported across platforms and directed players to share their Outlast ID from the Social Menu to connect with friends. Because that connection guidance is dated, check the current in-game Social Menu if the steps or platform support have changed. The same 2024 notes said cross-progression was not supported at that time; they do not establish its current status.

What “roles” mean in ordinary co-op
Regular co-op does not require a healer, tank, or dedicated objective runner. Think of roles as short-lived assignments that players can switch as circumstances change. One player might advance the objective while another watches the approach and calls out danger; if someone goes down, the team can shift its attention to finding a Syringe and creating a safer chance to revive.
Keep callouts short and specific: “Syringe here,” “enemy by the doorway,” “hold the objective while I revive,” or “regroup at the next safe room.” These are suggested phrases, not verified in-game quick-chat commands. No particular ping, voice-chat feature, or control scheme is assumed here.

How to revive a fallen teammate
The Epic Games Store guide says a fallen co-op teammate can be revived with a Syringe found in a glass case. It does not establish exact interaction timing, stock limits, or exceptions for every mode, so treat the Syringe as the core guidance rather than assuming a fixed supply or timing rule.
- Locate a Syringe. Search glass cases when the team needs a revive.
- Check the immediate danger. If an enemy is close, avoid starting the revive without support when you can first create a safer opening.
- Split attention. One teammate can move toward the Syringe or fallen player while another watches for threats or interrupts them if able.
- Regroup after the revive. Once the player is back, reassess the route and objective rather than assuming the previous plan is still safe.
Red Barrels’ March 2024 version 1.0 notes also listed a Self Revive Amp that resurrected a player after death once per Trial. That is a dated feature description, not a guarantee of current availability or eligibility in every mode. It is separate from the co-op Syringe revive.

Choose a Rig for the team’s immediate need
The Epic Games Store guide describes four Rigs. These are situational tools, not fixed class assignments or a ranking of the best loadout for every group.

The descriptions are functional comparisons, not a current balance assessment. Match the choice to your team’s situation, and be ready to change who handles each job as the Trial develops.

Plan around the objective, not a memorized route
Trials can repeat recognizable maps and broad objectives while changing routes, locked doors, available items, enemy placement, and some objective details, according to the Epic Games Store guide. In “Kill the Snitch,” the central task stays recognizable while key symbols and locations can change. “Grind the Bad Apples” keeps its broad objective while details such as valves or games may vary.
Learn what the objective asks you to accomplish, then search and navigate according to the current run. A route that worked before may not lead to the needed item or safe passage this time. Keep the team updated when a route is blocked or a useful item turns up, and adjust who advances, scouts, or supports a teammate accordingly.
Invasion has formal roles; ordinary co-op does not
Red Barrels’ October 21, 2025 Invasion update describes two distinct roles: Reagents work to complete a Trial while facing the risk of player Imposters, and Imposters infiltrate to try to kill all Reagents before they finish. The update says Invasion supports solo play and groups of two, three, or four. These are mode-specific roles; they should not be confused with the flexible teamwork assignments suggested for standard co-op.
