Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStart each Trial by following its current objective, not by trying to memorize a fixed route. The Outlast Trials reuses recognizable tasks and map spaces, but routes, item availability, and enemy placements can vary. Build progress by completing Trials and MK-Challenges, and choose abilities for the problem you need to solve—especially whether you are playing solo or with a team.
What to do in your first Trials
Trials are the longer missions; MK-Challenges are shorter therapies that use modified or redesigned portions of existing maps, according to Red Barrels’ Early Access explainer. Both are ways to learn the game’s objective patterns and earn progress. Treat the objective shown in your current run as authoritative: older guides and remembered routes may not match the placements you encounter.
Learn the task, then adapt to the run
Map spaces may remain familiar while routes, available items, and enemy placements change. “Kill the Snitch,” for example, keeps a recognizable broad task even when the route, symbols, or key locations differ. Use the current prompts to identify what to do next, then search the area and adjust your route rather than assuming a particular item or enemy will be in a memorized spot. This variation is described in the Epic Games Store beginner guide.
Play the objective, not the map
Pay attention to objective prompts and environmental clues as you move. If a familiar task appears in a new layout, work out the next required action from the information in the run rather than committing to a route that worked previously. This habit is useful whether you are learning the game for the first time or returning after an update.

How progression works—and what to verify
Red Barrels’ March 2024 1.0 launch announcement described Program Genesis as the “Path to Rebirth,” its straightforward campaign and main route to rebirth. Under the progression rules stated in that announcement, a player needed 20 Release Tokens to access Release Protocol. A Trial awarded two tokens and an MK-Challenge awarded one; tokens could be earned in any Trial, including Programs, Weekly Programs, and Special Events. The announcement also said replays awarded full XP and Murkoff Dollars, Program X unlocked after one Reborn, and Program Ultra after three.
Those are dated publisher statements, not a guarantee of the live rules in October 2026. Red Barrels’ official game page lists newer updates, so use the in-game board to check current programs, events, and requirements before planning a progression route. The 2023 Early Access explainer also contains historical program and level details that should not be treated as current instructions.
Choose a Rig for the problem you face
Rigs are reusable tools with cooldowns, rather than effects you can use continuously. The Epic Games Store guide names Stun, Blind, Heal, and X-Ray. They address different situations, so choose based on the Trial, your play style, and whether teammates can cover other needs. Check each Rig’s live in-game description; older guidance may not reflect later balance changes.
| Rig | Situation to consider | Guidance and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Stun | You need a way to interrupt or create an opening against a threat. | The beginner guide lists Stun as an option; check its current in-game description for how it works. |
| Blind | You want an escape opportunity, or need to help a teammate while an enemy is nearby. | The Epic guide recommends it for solo escape utility and notes its possible use during a co-op revive; this is guidance, not a universal best choice. |
| Heal | You want to support a team’s recovery. | The Epic guide describes it as useful team support. Check the current description and coordinate with teammates. |
| X-Ray | You want the option listed by the guide for a different tactical need. | The guide names X-Ray, but the cited material does not establish a current effect or a universally preferable use; rely on the live in-game description. |
Do not pick a Rig solely because another player calls it the best. A solo player may value an escape option differently from a group coordinating recovery or objectives, and a particular Trial can change what is useful.

Use Amps and Prescriptions with care
Amps are equippable perks and Prescriptions are passive boosts, as described in the Epic Games Store guide. Its examples include reducing noise, managing sanity effects, adding survival margin, improving stamina or inventory capacity, and breaking doors faster. These names and effects can change with updates. Read the current in-game descriptions before spending resources, and choose improvements that fit the difficulty you are tackling and the way you play.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Solo or co-op: choose your learning style
Both are legitimate ways to learn. Red Barrels said its 1.0 onboarding and difficulty adjustments were intended to support solo and group players. The trade-off is practical: co-op can provide shared recovery and coordination, while solo play gives you independent pacing but leaves fewer recovery options.
What a team can do well
- Coordinate and divide objective tasks instead of having everyone search the same area.
- Trade items when one player’s need is more urgent.
- Use distractions to create an opening while a teammate works or revives someone.
- Make use of shared healing opportunities described in the beginner guide.
What to expect solo
Solo play lets you set your own pace and make decisions without coordinating with a team. In exchange, you cannot rely on a teammate to share recovery options, items, or objective work. Pick a loadout that supports your own needs, and take care not to spend a cooldown or resource without considering the next objective.
Quick Recap
A practical first-run checklist
- Check the live board. Choose an available Trial or MK-Challenge and confirm its current requirements rather than relying on an old progression guide.
- Read your objective. Identify the task and follow the prompts as the run unfolds.
- Expect variation. Use what the current run shows you; routes, item availability, and enemy positions may differ from previous attempts.
- Pick a Rig for your situation. Consider whether you are solo or supporting a team, then verify the Rig’s current description.
- Spend upgrades deliberately. Check Amp and Prescription effects in-game before committing resources.
- Adapt after a setback. Replays were described as awarding full XP and Murkoff Dollars in Red Barrels’ March 2024 announcement; confirm live rewards and requirements in-game.
