Update Palworld to version 0.3.1 or later, load your save, and travel into the unexplored northwest of the existing map. Sakurajima lies north of Icy Wind Island and Forgotten Island and southwest of the Astral Mountains. There is no cited hard level requirement, but this is endgame content: reported wild Pals start around levels 42–43, many are in the mid-to-upper 40s, deeper areas reach level 50 or higher, and Moonflower faction NPCs are level 45.

Sakurajima was introduced in Palworld update 0.3.1, announced by Pocketpair on June 26, 2024 and released on June 27, 2024. Install that update or a later client version, then launch the save that contains your existing world. Sakurajima is an expansion of the normal Palworld map, not a separate downloadable map or a new save type.
Patch numbers and balance can change in later releases. The level cap, enemy tuning, platform availability and other details below describe the 0.3.1-era Sakurajima content; check that your live client is updated before relying on an old menu or balance value.

Readiness checklist
- Team: Bring a high-level party with reliable damage, survivability and at least one Pal suited to travel. The cited wild-Pal range begins around 42–43, while many encounters are in the 40s and some areas reach 50 or above.
- Player level: The update raised the maximum player level to 55. You can travel to the island without a published entry-level gate, but arriving far below the local enemy range makes ordinary exploration dangerous.
- Supplies: Carry healing items, ammunition and spare equipment. Long trips through an unexplored region are harder to recover from before you have established a base or fast-travel point.
- Armor and weapons: Use your most durable available armor and weapons. The island is designed as endgame content, so treat untested encounters as lethal rather than assuming the route is a low-level story path.
- Capture capacity: The Pal capture-bonus limit increases from 10 to 12 in the update, giving dedicated collectors two more bonus increments to work toward.
Where Sakurajima Island is located
Open your existing Palworld map and move toward the blacked-out northwest. Sakurajima is north of Icy Wind Island and Forgotten Island and southwest of the Astral Mountains. Travel into the unexplored area until the island appears on your map.
Reaching the island safely
- Update the game to version 0.3.1 or later and load your established world.
- Choose a departure point that lets you head northwest without committing your entire team to an unbroken expedition.
- Enter the unexplored northwest region. The island reveals itself as you approach; you do not select it from a separate world menu.
- Locate and activate a fast-travel point before making long detours. This gives you a recovery route if a fight goes badly and shortens later trips for resources or captures.
- Only then begin systematic exploration. Keep enough healing supplies and ammunition for the return journey rather than spending everything on the first group of Pals.
The exact approach path depends on the fast-travel points you have unlocked in your own world. The important navigation fact is the island’s position relative to the existing landmarks, not a special transport item or a separate map download.
What to do first after landing
Your first objective should be to make Sakurajima sustainable rather than immediately attack its hardest landmark. Establish fast travel, scout the surrounding terrain, and identify nearby resource opportunities. This order reduces the cost of every later trip and lets you leave with useful materials even if you are not ready for a tower or raid.
First landing sequence
- Secure a return point. Activate the nearest fast-travel location you can reach safely.
- Scout in short loops. Explore a manageable area, mark useful resources and return before your supplies are exhausted.
- Capture selectively. Add new Pals that improve your combat or travel team, but do not let collection attempts consume all your ammunition and healing items.
- Find oil infrastructure. Look for oil fields and plan where a Crude Oil Extractor can be placed once you have unlocked and built it.
- Review technologies. The update adds technologies tied to weapons, Plasteel, mining, food storage, lockpicking and other systems. Spend unlocks on the tools that support your immediate goal before saving resources for a raid.
Crude Oil and Plasteel: the new progression loop
Crude Oil is the central material loop of Sakurajima’s high-tier progression. Pocketpair’s patch notes add Crude Oil and the Crude Oil Extractor; Crude Oil feeds Plasteel production, and Plasteel is then used for high-tier spheres, weapons and armor.
How to begin oil production
- Unlock the Crude Oil Extractor in the Technology menu when your character has the required technology access.
- Travel to an oil field on Sakurajima and place the extractor at the field according to the game’s building rules.
- Keep the extractor supplied with the power and base support your world requires, then collect the Crude Oil it produces.
- Process Crude Oil into Plasteel using the relevant production station and recipe.
- Prioritize Plasteel for the equipment that removes your next progression bottleneck: stronger spheres for captures, weapons for endgame fights, or armor for surviving the island.
Do not treat the extractor as a one-time chest. It is infrastructure: the earlier you establish a reliable oil source, the less you depend on random exploration loot for high-tier crafting. If your base cannot support the extractor yet, keep exploring and capturing while you work toward the required technology and production setup.

Sakurajima’s major destinations and challenges
The update adds several distinct activities. Their difficulty and multiplayer requirements are different, so use the table to choose a sensible next step instead of treating every new marker as an immediate objective.

Moonflowers and the tower
The Moonflowers are a new faction, and their tower is one of Sakurajima’s headline progression encounters. Reported Moonflower NPCs are level 45. That figure is a practical readiness signal, not a formal entry requirement: you can approach earlier, but a team that struggles against ordinary level-40-plus enemies is unlikely to make a tower attempt efficient.
The Rayne Syndicate Oil Rig
The Rayne Syndicate Oil Rig is a stronghold that pays out crude oil. It is both a combat challenge and a resource objective. Approach it after you have enough ammunition and durability to finish a concentrated fight; arriving with no reserve turns a useful oil run into a forced retreat.
Blazamut Ryu and hard-mode content
Blazamut Ryu is the update’s raid target. Meteorite events and tower-boss hard modes provide additional challenges once your normal progression is stable. The sensible sequence is to improve your technology and Plasteel equipment first, then use those upgrades to prepare a team for the raid rather than attempting it as your first Sakurajima activity.
New Pals and how to explore the island
The Sakurajima update adds new Pal species. A Palworld Database guide updated in 2026 counts 24 new Pals associated with the update and identifies four named island zones, a shrine and the Moonflower Tower. Counts and area labels can change with later game versions, so use that number as a guide to the 0.3.1 content rather than a promise that every current client displays exactly the same collection total.

A practical capture route
- Work outward from your first fast-travel point instead of crossing the whole island in one run.
- Record which species you have already captured and which areas still need a return visit.
- Carry enough spheres for deliberate captures. The update’s capture-bonus limit is 12, up from 10, so long-term collectors can continue building bonuses beyond the old ceiling.
- Use the new Pals to fill clear team roles—damage, defense, traversal or base utility—before replacing a reliable member solely for novelty.
- Return to the shrine and named zones after your gear improves. Some deeper areas contain level-50-or-higher encounters, making a later revisit more productive than repeated early knockouts.
New weapons, buildings and base systems
Sakurajima is not only an island with stronger enemies. The patch expands the technology tree and adds systems that change how you fight, mine, store food and manage Pals.

Which technologies to unlock first
There is no single mandatory order because your bottleneck may be combat, oil production, storage or collection. A useful priority framework is:
- Combat first: Choose a weapon and armor path that lets your team survive level-40-plus encounters.
- Production first: Unlock the Crude Oil Extractor and the Plasteel chain if high-tier crafting is limiting your progress.
- Base first: Add the Cold Food Box, mining structures or Refrigerated Crusher when upkeep and material processing are slowing every expedition.
- Collection first: Build around capture bonuses, the Pal Dressing Facility, Dog Coins and the Medal Merchant if your goal is completion rather than immediate boss progression.
Lockpicking and locked chests
The update adds a lockpicking mini-game for locked chests. You need a Lockpicking Tool; carrying ordinary spheres or weapons does not replace it.
- Craft or obtain the Lockpicking Tool through the new technology and item path.
- Find a locked chest while exploring Sakurajima or the wider updated world.
- Start the lockpicking interaction and follow the on-screen mini-game rather than trying to open the chest through the normal button prompt.
- Use the tool carefully and keep a spare available for a long exploration run.
- If a chest does not open, check that you selected the lockpicking interaction and that the tool is in your inventory; do not assume the chest is part of a tower or raid key sequence.
The patch notes establish the tool and mini-game, but do not specify a universal chest reward table. Treat locked chests as exploration opportunities, not guaranteed sources of a particular named item.

Pal Skins add cosmetic customization, and the Pal Dressing Facility is the new base structure used for that system. Build the facility when you want to manage appearances without confusing cosmetics with combat statistics. The update’s feature list does not state that skins alter a Pal’s level, abilities or capture bonuses, so choose them as visual customization unless your current client explicitly documents another effect.

Solo, cooperative and multiplayer choices
Sakurajima supports different play styles, but not every activity has the same player requirement. Use the following decision guide before spending resources on a destination.

A complete recommended order
- Patch and verify. Install 0.3.1 or later and confirm that your live client has the Sakurajima features.
- Prepare at home. Fill healing, ammunition and armor reserves; select a team that can survive reported level-42–43 starting encounters and level-45 faction enemies.
- Reveal the northwest. Travel north of Icy Wind Island and Forgotten Island, southwest of the Astral Mountains, until Sakurajima appears.
- Activate fast travel. Do this before deep exploration so a defeat or early retreat does not erase the value of the trip.
- Scout and capture. Map a small loop, collect useful new Pals and note the island’s named zones, shrine and tower.
- Unlock the resource chain. Build the Crude Oil Extractor at an oil field, produce Plasteel, and use it on spheres, armor or weapons that solve your current weakness.
- Expand your base. Add mining, food-storage and processing structures as your resource and upkeep needs become clear.
- Attempt the Moonflower Tower. Use the level-45 NPC report as a readiness benchmark, not a formal gate.
- Challenge the Oil Rig. Bring enough reserve gear to finish a stronghold fight and benefit from its crude-oil rewards.
- Try hard modes, meteorites and the raid. Move to tower-boss hard modes, meteorite events and Blazamut Ryu after your technology and team have caught up with the island.
- Use the side systems. Collect Dog Coins, visit the Medal Merchant, open locked chests with a Lockpicking Tool and customize Pals at the Pal Dressing Facility.
- Join the Arena when appropriate. The Desiccated Desert Arena is multiplayer-only, so it is not a missing solo quest if you cannot start it alone.
Common problems and fixes
“I cannot find Sakurajima.”
Check that the game is updated and that you are looking northwest on the existing map. The island is not selected from a separate map screen. Travel into the blacked-out area north of Icy Wind Island and Forgotten Island and southwest of the Astral Mountains.

“The island kills my team immediately.”
That usually indicates a readiness problem rather than a missing access item. Reported wild Pals begin around level 42–43, with stronger areas at 50 or above. Return to your base, improve armor, ammunition, healing, team levels and technology, then re-enter through your fast-travel point.
“I expected the Arena to work solo.”
The official patch notes describe the Multiplayer Arena as multiplayer-only. Its unavailable solo start is therefore an activity restriction, not evidence that your update failed.
“I have oil but cannot make Plasteel.”
Crude Oil is an input, not the finished material. Confirm that you unlocked the Plasteel technology and have the required production station and recipe before attempting to craft it.

“A locked chest will not open.”
Use the lockpicking interaction and carry a Lockpicking Tool. The update adds a mini-game; a normal chest-opening prompt is not enough for these containers.

“The level cap is different in my game.”
The cap of 55 belongs to the 0.3.1 update notes. Later Palworld versions may change caps or balance, so follow the progression and technology values displayed by your current client if they differ.
What the Sakurajima update is best for
Sakurajima works best as a staged endgame expansion. The island’s geography gives you a clear new destination, while its level range makes preparation meaningful. The update’s most important progression is the Crude Oil-to-Plasteel chain; its most visible combat milestones are the Moonflower Tower, Rayne Syndicate Oil Rig and Blazamut Ryu raid. Around those, Pocketpair adds 24 reported new Pals, new weapons, mining and refrigeration structures, Dog Coins, lockpicking, cosmetics, meteorite events, hard-mode towers and a multiplayer-only Arena.
If you approach it as a checklist of boss fights, you will miss much of the update’s value. Establish fast travel, build the oil economy, upgrade technology, then use the stronger equipment to decide whether your next goal is collection, the tower, the Oil Rig, the raid or cooperative Arena play.
