Use WordPress as the editorial system and Next.js as the public application. WordPress stores posts, pages, media and custom content; Next.js fetches that content through the REST API or WPGraphQL, renders routes with the App Router, and serves the result with static generation, incremental revalidation or dynamic rendering.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
A reliable build has five parts: a secured WordPress API, server-side data access in Next.js, route and media handling, a protected draft-preview path, and a cache/revalidation plan. The steps below cover each part, including the trade-offs between REST and WPGraphQL, deployment choices, and the failure modes that commonly affect headless sites.

What a headless WordPress and Next.js site actually is
In a traditional WordPress installation, PHP renders the visitor-facing HTML and the WordPress administration area. In a headless setup, WordPress remains the CMS and database, but its theme is no longer responsible for the public interface. Next.js becomes that interface and requests content from WordPress over an API.
That separation means the two systems can be scaled and deployed independently. Vercel describes the model as an architecture that “decouples your frontend and backend into separate, independently scalable pieces of infrastructure.” Editors can continue working in WordPress while the frontend uses React components, the Next.js App Router, image optimization and route-level caching.

For a video-game publication, WordPress might hold news posts, reviews, game records, author profiles and taxonomy terms. Next.js can present those records as fast article pages, searchable archives, scorecards and custom layouts without requiring the public site to execute WordPress themes.
Choose the content API before writing frontend code
WordPress can expose content through its built-in REST API or through the WPGraphQL plugin. Both can power a production site; the right choice depends on your content model, query patterns and team tooling.
| Decision area | REST API | WPGraphQL |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Straightforward resources, existing REST integrations and teams already familiar with HTTP endpoints. | Nested pages, selective field retrieval and a schema-driven frontend. |
| Query shape | Resource-oriented requests; related data may require additional requests or endpoint-specific parameters. | One typed query can request related fields and only the fields the component needs. |
| Schema and typing | Types are usually defined by the frontend team or generated from endpoint documentation. | The GraphQL schema describes available types, fields and arguments for tooling and validation. |
| WordPress dependency | Available when the WordPress REST API is enabled. | Requires installing and activating WPGraphQL, plus any extensions needed for custom fields or content. |
| Caching considerations | Cache each resource request and account for pagination and query parameters. | Cache complete queries and variables; use the standard /graphql endpoint where the host recommends it. |
Do not choose GraphQL simply because it is newer, or REST because it is built in. List the pages your site must render, identify which data is nested, and select the API that keeps those requests understandable and cacheable. WPGraphQL’s documentation covers its schema, queries, mutations and caching-related extensions; the REST API is a reasonable starting point for simpler models.
Prerequisites and a safe project layout
- A WordPress installation with the REST API available, or permission to install and activate WPGraphQL.
- A Next.js project that can run on Node.js. Node.js is the baseline runtime for a Next.js deployment.
- Administrative access to create application credentials, webhooks or preview settings in WordPress.
- A plan for where images, secrets, logs and cache state will live in production.
Keep WordPress administration and authenticated API calls on the server side. The browser should receive rendered content, not administrator credentials or a token that can mutate WordPress.
Step 1: Prepare WordPress as a content backend
Confirm the API and content model
Publish a test post and page, then verify that the selected API can return their titles, slugs, body content, publication dates, featured images, authors and taxonomies. If the site uses custom post types—such as games, platforms or reviews—make sure those types are exposed by the API and that the fields your frontend needs are available.
For REST, confirm that the installation’s REST API responds to authenticated and public requests according to the visibility of each resource. For WPGraphQL, activate the plugin and verify that the GraphQL endpoint exposes the post types, taxonomies and fields you intend to query. Keep private editorial fields out of the public schema unless the server-side request is explicitly authenticated.
Decide how media will be delivered
Store the image URL, dimensions and alternative text returned by WordPress with each media record. Next.js image handling requires the remote host to be allowed in the application configuration. Plan this before importing a large library of artwork, because an unapproved image host will cause runtime errors even when the WordPress request succeeds.
Step 2: Create the Next.js application
Start with the official Next.js starter or the create-next-app command. Choose the App Router so route components, loading states, error boundaries and server components follow the current Next.js model.

Run the development server and confirm that the starter page loads before adding WordPress requests. Keep API access in a server-side module such as lib/wordpress.ts. Components that render in the browser should call your own Next.js route or receive data from a server component, rather than embedding the WordPress endpoint and credentials in client JavaScript.
Step 3: Configure the WordPress endpoint
Create a server-only environment variable named WORDPRESS_API_URL. With WPGraphQL, its value is normally the WordPress site’s /graphql endpoint. With REST, set it to the REST base URL used by your installation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →const endpoint = process.env.WORDPRESS_API_URL;
if (!endpoint) {
throw new Error('WORDPRESS_API_URL is not configured');
}
Keep this variable out of any client-exposed prefix such as NEXT_PUBLIC_. Configure separate values for local development, preview deployments and production. If authenticated requests are required, store their credentials in a second server-only variable and never return them from an API route.
Step 4: Build a small, cacheable data-access layer
Centralize fetching, error handling and caching instead of placing ad hoc requests in every page. Each function should accept the smallest set of arguments needed to identify a resource, use bounded pagination for collections and return a predictable shape to the UI.
A REST request pattern
The exact paths depend on your WordPress configuration and custom post types. A REST data function can construct the resource URL from WORDPRESS_API_URL, request JSON on the server, check the response status and throw an error for non-success responses.
export async function getPostBySlug(slug: string) {
const response = await fetch(
`${process.env.WORDPRESS_API_URL}/posts?slug=${encodeURIComponent(slug)}`
);
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`WordPress returned ${response.status}`);
}
const posts = await response.json();
return posts[0] ?? null;
}
Use the same pattern for pages, media and custom post types. Add pagination parameters to archive functions, and do not request an unbounded collection during a build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA WPGraphQL request pattern
GraphQL lets a page request only the fields it renders. Keep the query in a server-side module and send variables separately so the request can be cached consistently.
const query = `
query PostBySlug($slug: ID!) {
post(id: $slug, idType: SLUG) {
title
slug
date
content
featuredImage {
node {
sourceUrl
altText
}
}
}
}
`;
export async function getPostBySlug(slug: string) {
const response = await fetch(process.env.WORDPRESS_API_URL!, {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({ query, variables: { slug } })
});
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`WordPress returned ${response.status}`);
const result = await response.json();
if (result.errors) throw new Error('GraphQL query failed');
return result.data.post;
}
Adapt the field names to your schema and extensions. A query that asks for fields unavailable in the schema fails as a whole, so test schema changes with the same version of WordPress used in deployment.

Step 5: Render pages with the App Router
Use route segments that match WordPress slugs
Create route segments such as app/posts/[slug]/page.tsx for articles and equivalent segments for pages or custom post types. The page receives the slug, calls the server-side data function and returns a not-found response when WordPress has no matching record.
import { notFound } from 'next/navigation';
import { getPostBySlug } from '@/lib/wordpress';
export default async function PostPage({
params
}: { params: { slug: string } }) {
const post = await getPostBySlug(params.slug);
if (!post) notFound();
return <article><h1>{post.title}</h1></article>;
}
Add loading.tsx for a route-level loading state, error.tsx for recoverable failures and not-found.tsx for missing slugs. These states prevent a slow or temporarily unavailable WordPress origin from producing a blank page.

For a finite set of important pages, generateStaticParams can provide slugs at build time. Do not fetch every historical record without pagination and limits. Large uncached build requests can consume WordPress PHP workers or trigger rate limiting.
Step 6: Choose static generation, ISR or dynamic rendering
| Rendering mode | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Full static generation | Content changes infrequently and a complete rebuild is acceptable after publishing. | Build time grows with page count, and new content is not visible until the next build. |
| Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR) | Most pages are cacheable but need to refresh after a time interval or a publish event. | Pages can briefly serve the previous version while regeneration occurs; cache coordination matters across instances. |
| Fully dynamic rendering | Every request needs fresh data, personalization or request-specific authorization. | More origin traffic and latency, with fewer opportunities for CDN caching. |
ISR updates static content without rebuilding the entire site, reduces server load and supports large numbers of pages. A route can declare a revalidation interval, then a WordPress webhook can trigger an immediate refresh when an editor publishes.
export const revalidate = 300;
The interval is a freshness ceiling, not a promise that every visitor waits for a new WordPress request. For publication workflows, pair ISR with on-demand revalidation.
Step 7: Add authenticated draft preview
Editors need to see unpublished posts before they go live. The WordPress starter for Next.js includes Draft Mode and authenticated preview as a reference implementation. Implement the same principle even if your project is custom: a WordPress preview link calls a protected Next.js route, the route verifies a secret and an authenticated request, enables Draft Mode, and redirects to the requested slug.
- Create a server-only preview secret and configure the corresponding value in WordPress.
- Build a Next.js route that accepts the requested content identifier, validates the secret and rejects missing or invalid values.
- Enable Draft Mode only after validation, then redirect to the preview URL.
- In the data-access layer, detect Draft Mode and use an authenticated WordPress request that can read the draft.
- Provide a visible preview indicator and a route that disables Draft Mode when the editor exits preview.
Never put the preview secret in a client bundle, and do not allow an arbitrary redirect destination. Preview requests should remain server-side so draft content and authentication headers are not exposed to visitors.
Step 8: Handle WordPress HTML and images safely
Sanitize rich text before rendering
WordPress content often arrives as HTML. Treat it as untrusted input: sanitize it on the server or transform it through a controlled renderer before using a raw-HTML rendering escape hatch. Permit only the elements and attributes your design supports, and remove scripts, event-handler attributes and unsafe URLs.

Configure remote images
Add the WordPress media host to Next.js image configuration using the current remote-patterns or domain setting supported by your Next.js version. Include width, height and alternative text when WordPress provides them. If media comes from more than one host, list each host explicitly rather than allowing every remote URL.
Preserve accessibility and SEO fields
Map WordPress titles, excerpts, canonical information, publication dates, author data and image alternative text into Next.js metadata. Keep slugs stable; when a slug changes, create a redirect or preserve an old-slug lookup so search visitors do not receive a not-found page.
Step 9: Revalidate after publishing
Time-based ISR is simple, but an editorial site usually needs a post to appear soon after publication. Add a WordPress webhook that calls a secured Next.js route after a post, page or relevant taxonomy changes.
- Generate a long, random webhook secret and store it only in server-side environment variables.
- Configure WordPress to send the event type, content identifier and secret over HTTPS.
- Have the Next.js route verify the secret before doing any work.
- Translate the changed identifier into the affected paths and call on-demand revalidation for those paths or tags.
- Return a clear success or failure status and log the event without logging secrets or private content.
Revalidate archive pages as well as the changed detail page. A newly published review may affect the review page, the home feed, a game archive and a taxonomy listing. Keep the invalidation set explicit so one edit does not flush the entire site.
Deployment choices
| Option | Advantages | Responsibilities |
|---|---|---|
| Managed Next.js platform | Integrated builds, CDN delivery and straightforward environment-variable configuration. | Understand platform cache behavior, preview environments, limits and the cost of server functions. |
| Self-hosted Node.js server | Control over runtime, networking, logs, cache topology and regional placement. | Operate the process, TLS, scaling, image handling, monitoring and cache invalidation. |
| Docker-based deployment | Repeatable application images and portability between infrastructure providers. | Provide persistent or shared cache coordination where needed and design health checks, rollbacks and log retention. |
Next.js documents Node.js as the minimum deployment requirement. A single next start process supports Server Components and ISR. When you run multiple instances, coordinate their cache state so one instance does not continue serving stale content after another has revalidated a page.
Regardless of host, place a CDN in front of cacheable pages and media when traffic warrants it. Keep WordPress administration and authenticated API endpoints separate from the public delivery path.

Large bursts of uncached requests can exhaust WordPress PHP workers or produce HTTP 429 responses. A 429 means the origin is asking the client to reduce concurrent or repeated requests; it is not a signal to retry immediately in a tight loop.
- Cache successful API responses and rendered pages.
- Use pagination and request only the fields a page needs.
- Bound concurrency during builds and imports instead of launching one request per page at once.
- Generate high-value routes incrementally rather than pre-rendering an unbounded archive.
- Use the standard
/graphqlendpoint when your host documents it as the optimal path for WPGraphQL handling. - Back off on 429 responses and record the request pattern that caused them.
- Trigger targeted on-demand revalidation instead of rebuilding every route after each edit.
Monitor origin response time, cache-hit rate, failed builds, revalidation errors and the volume of API requests generated by each deployment.

Security checklist for production
- Keep API credentials, preview secrets and webhook secrets in server-only environment variables.
- Use HTTPS for WordPress, Next.js, preview and webhook traffic.
- Validate webhook signatures or shared secrets before revalidation.
- Restrict preview redirects to paths on your own site.
- Do not expose administrator cookies or authenticated GraphQL headers to browser code.
- Sanitize WordPress HTML and validate image URLs.
- Limit public API fields and custom endpoints to the content the frontend actually needs.
- Rate-limit preview and webhook routes and log failures without sensitive payloads.
Troubleshooting common failures
The page returns a 404 even though WordPress has the post
Check that the frontend is querying the correct post type, slug and publication status. A draft will not appear in a normal public request. For custom post types, verify that the type is exposed through the chosen API and that the route uses the same slug normalization as WordPress.
Images fail while text loads
Verify the image host in Next.js remote-image configuration, confirm that the media URL is reachable from the deployment environment and provide dimensions when the image component requires them. A successful API response does not automatically authorize every media host.
Publishing does not update the site
Inspect the webhook delivery, secret validation, affected-path list and revalidation logs. If the webhook succeeds but visitors still see old content, check CDN and multi-instance cache coordination. Also confirm that the page is not being rendered dynamically from a separately cached API response.
Builds overload WordPress
Look for unbounded archive queries, duplicate requests and parallel generation. Add pagination, memoize identical fetches, lower concurrency and move long-tail pages to ISR. A 429 response should trigger backoff and workload reduction.
Preview shows the published version
Confirm that Draft Mode is enabled before the data request runs, that the request carries valid WordPress authentication and that the query asks for draft content. Ensure preview requests are not served from a public cache shared with anonymous visitors.
A practical launch sequence
- Model posts, pages, taxonomies, media and custom post types in WordPress.
- Choose REST or WPGraphQL and verify every required field through that API.
- Create the Next.js App Router project and configure
WORDPRESS_API_URL. - Implement server-side functions for individual records, archives, media and metadata.
- Build route, loading, error and not-found states.
- Configure remote images and sanitize WordPress HTML.
- Select static generation, ISR or dynamic rendering per route.
- Add protected Draft Mode and test unpublished content with an editor account.
- Add a secured webhook for targeted on-demand revalidation.
- Deploy with Node.js, configure environment variables, then test cache behavior, failures and rollback.
How to decide if this architecture fits
Headless WordPress with Next.js is a strong fit when editors need WordPress workflows but the public experience needs a React-based design, independently scalable infrastructure or route-level performance controls. It is less attractive when a small site needs only conventional WordPress themes and has no team to maintain an API contract, preview flow and two deployment systems.

For most content-heavy sites, start with the simplest API that represents the model accurately, keep requests server-side, use ISR for cacheable pages and add on-demand revalidation when publishing speed matters. Treat cache coordination and preview authentication as core features, not post-launch enhancements.
