The Regent is built around balancing ordinary Energy with Stars, a second resource that can carry over between turns. Build Stars before committing to Star-cost cards, use minion transformations when their effects fit the fight, and decide whether to spend a turn strengthening the retained Sovereign Blade or attack with it now. These are strategic principles, not a guaranteed winning build: Slay the Spire 2 is in Early Access, and its cards and balance can change.

How Stars change the Regent’s turn planning

Energy is the resource you expect to spend within a turn; Stars create a longer planning horizon. In its December 2025 preview, Mega Crit said Stars do not deplete at the end of a turn and have no cap. Some cards generate Stars, some spend them, and others become stronger based on how many you have. That means a Star is not automatically something to spend as soon as you can: its value depends on the options coming up and on whether a card’s effect is worth the cost.

Mega Crit’s preview illustrates this with Hidden Cache, which gains one Star immediately and three more on the next turn, and Falling Star, which costs two Stars to deal damage and apply Weak and Vulnerable. Those are preview-era examples, not assurances that card text or values remain identical in the current build. Check the cards in your run.

A practical Stars decision

  • Look at your hand and likely next-turn options before spending Stars.
  • Build the resource when a card can generate Stars and you do not need to spend them immediately for a useful effect.
  • Spend when the Star-cost card’s damage, debuffs, or other effect improves the current situation enough to justify losing access to those Stars.
  • Pay attention to cards that scale with Stars held; spending can reduce their value even if the spend itself is affordable.

When minion transformations are useful

The Regent can transform cards into minions, making a card in hand a way to access a different effect rather than simply play it as written. Mega Crit’s preview shows GUARDS!!! transforming any number of cards in hand into Minion Sacrifice; the example Minion Sacrifice provides block and exhausts. In a dangerous turn, converting cards this way can turn otherwise less useful hand contents into defense. The trade-off is that you are giving up those cards’ original uses, so consider what you need now and what you may need later in the fight.

How to build and use the Sovereign Blade

Forge cards create and improve the Regent’s Sovereign Blade. Mega Crit says the first Forge card played in combat creates the corresponding Blade card, and additional Forge increases the damage it will deal. The preview describes the Blade as having Retain, so you can hold it rather than being forced to use it on the turn it enters your hand.

180 Blank Playing Cards, Poker Size 2.5" x 3.5" Matte Finish Custom Cards
  • Put Your Creativity to Good Use: Apostrophe Games’ blank playing cards are a great way to show off your fun side and design your own game to enjoy with family and friends! Personalize each card and create a unique game that will bring tons of laughter and joy to the next game night.
  • Jumbo Pack: The set includes 180 blank playing cards that you can use any way you want. Use them with pens or permanent markers, even acrylic paint to design any type of game you can think of.
  • Premium Materials: Made from premium playing card stock (not just heavy paper like our competitors), these cards have a core in the center so they 'pop' back into shape when bent. Just like standard playing cards.
  • Multipurpose Design: Our blank poker sized cards (2.5" x 3.5") can be used for board games, blank flash cards, and index cards. You can draw virtually any design and use them to develop your artwork or create your own matching game.
  • Great Gift: Get our flash card set for yourself or as a practical and fun gift for any artsy person in your life who would like to experiment more with color, shape, and designs. They can also be used as flashcards for studying.

This gives you a timing choice: use the Blade for immediate damage, or invest in more Forge and keep the strengthened attack for a later turn. Neither choice is universally correct. Immediate damage may matter more when an enemy is close to a dangerous action; waiting may be worthwhile when the fight gives you room to improve the Blade. Judge the decision against the current enemy and the Blade’s current damage.

Where colorless cards fit

Colorless cards are another part of the Regent’s toolkit, but they are a possible synergy rather than a build requirement. Mega Crit’s preview identifies the Sovereign Blade as colorless and shows Spectrum Shift, a power that adds a random colorless card to your hand at the start of a turn. Card creation can broaden your options, but whether it helps depends on the cards you find and how well they fit the run. Do not force a colorless-card plan when your available cards support a different approach.

Choosing a direction in a run

The Regent’s mechanics can work together, but the official preview does not establish a single best build or provide a named win rate. Use the cards and rewards in the run to decide what deserves priority:

What to assess Why it matters
Star generation and Star spending A plan that depends on Star-cost cards needs ways to build the resource, while cards that scale with held Stars reward preserving it.
Forge access and timing Forge creates the Blade and increases its damage, so weigh the future attack’s value against the need for immediate impact.
Minion transformations Transformation can turn cards into utility such as the preview’s block-producing Minion Sacrifice, but uses up their original options.
Colorless-card effects Generation and interaction may add flexibility when the offered cards complement the deck; they are not mandatory.
