You can start without buying the base game or subscribing to EA Play, but expansions and other add-on content cost extra. EA has not promised the game will remain free forever.

The free download is the Base Game—not every expansion, kit, or other add-on. EA describes the extra content as separately purchased, and its store listing displays the base game at $0.00 as of October 8, 2026. In the base game, you can create and customize Sims, build and furnish homes, explore neighborhoods, develop relationships, pursue careers and aspirations, and direct everyday or fantastical stories. EA lists PC and Mac through the EA app, Steam, and PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. EA’s download instructions also name Epic Games as a PC/Mac option. Store availability and exact steps can vary by platform and region, so use the storefront you normally use and confirm the game is listed there.

PC or Mac through the EA app
- Open the EA app and sign in to your EA Account.
- Search for “The Sims 4” and open the game’s page.
- Select Download, choose an install location and language, then review and accept the terms.
- Select Download to begin installation. When it finishes, select Play.
EA says the EA app replaced Origin as the main PC/Mac download and launch platform. The 2022 announcement mentioned Origin, but that is historical guidance; use the current EA app instructions instead. Steam and Epic are alternative PC/Mac storefront routes listed by EA. PlayStation or Xbox
Open the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store on your console, search for The Sims 4, and follow that store’s download prompts. EA lists PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One as supported platforms; check your console’s store for local availability and the current listing.

Accounts, internet, and EA Play
For PC/Mac installation and registration, EA requires an EA Account and the EA app. EA says an internet connection is needed for activation and for additional content or online features, but you can play offline after installation. EA’s FAQ explains the setup and offline-play distinction.

EA Play is not required to get the free Base Game. It is a paid membership with separate Sims-related benefits; EA’s current membership page lists access to The Sims 4 Get to Work Expansion Pack and a discount on EA digital purchases. Membership benefits and prices can change, so check EA’s live EA Play page before subscribing. A membership benefit is not the same as all add-ons being included with the free game.

Check whether your computer meets the requirements
EA publishes these requirements for PC and Mac. The storage figures are free space required; EA also specifies an additional 1 GB for custom content and saves. Review the full EA system requirements before installing, particularly if you use a newer operating system or hardware.

When the download does not appear free
- Check that you selected the Base Game. Expansion packs and other add-ons are separate purchases; their prices do not mean the base download is paid.
- Check the correct platform store. Sign in to the account used on your PC, Mac, or console, and look for the base game in that store’s current listing.
- On PC/Mac, use EA’s current setup guidance. The EA app is the main EA launcher; the older Origin references are from the original 2022 announcement.
- If you are considering EA Play, treat it as optional. It is not a prerequisite for downloading the free base game.
EA’s current availability and support information is the best place to verify any platform-specific change: download guidance.
