Start by checking which edition you play: Java Edition uses community mods and mod loaders, while Bedrock Edition uses Add-Ons. A Java mod must match both the Minecraft version and loader of the profile you launch; Bedrock players should not install Java loaders such as Forge or Fabric.
Choose the right path for your Minecraft edition

Minecraft Support describes Java mods as content that can add or remove features or change gameplay. It also notes that modding is not officially supported: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” See Minecraft Support’s Java mods guidance.

Install mods in Minecraft Java Edition
1. Choose the Minecraft version and loader
First decide which Minecraft version you want to play, then check the requirements of the mod or modpack you intend to use. A loader is the framework the game profile uses to load compatible mods. Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt are options, but a mod’s listing—not a general rule about which loader is best—determines what you need.
Do not assume that a mod built for one loader works with another, or that nearby Minecraft versions are interchangeable. CurseForge identifies mismatched game versions and loader types as causes of incompatibility in its mod and modpack installation guidance.

2. Create or install the matching profile
You can install a loader using its official instructions or use a mod manager. CurseForge’s Forge installation guide covers both app-based and manual installation. Its app creates a separate modding environment and supports Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla profiles, according to CurseForge’s getting-started guide.
A separate profile helps keep the modded setup distinct from your ordinary game installation. When starting the game, select the profile associated with the mods you installed rather than assuming the standard launcher profile will load them.
3. Check the mod file and its dependencies
On the mod’s own listing, verify the exact Minecraft version and loader supported by the file you plan to use. Read its dependency requirements as well: some mods need additional files to run. Fabric’s mod installation documentation says most Fabric mods also require Fabric API. Install a version of that dependency compatible with your game and loader when the mod calls for it.

4. Add the files and launch the modded profile

Download the mod build that matches the selected Minecraft version and loader.

Install the file and any required dependencies using your mod manager’s installation flow, or place them in the mods folder associated with that profile, following the loader or mod author’s current instructions.

Launch Minecraft using the intended modded profile and check whether the mod loads.

If you are installing a modpack rather than one mod, use the manager’s modpack installation flow where available and launch the resulting profile. CurseForge maintains a separate environment for its modded game profiles; its documented default allocation of 4 GB / 4096 MB for modpacks is a product default, not a universal memory recommendation, and is subject to change.
Customize Minecraft Bedrock Edition with Add-Ons
Bedrock customization follows a different route: use Add-Ons rather than Java loaders or Java mod files. Microsoft Learn’s Getting Started with Minecraft Add-Ons presents Add-Ons as a way to customize Bedrock. Minecraft Help says they can add content such as custom blocks, items, mobs, and recipes, and that Marketplace content is available on platforms running Bedrock Edition; see Activate Add-Ons in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
Activation steps vary by platform. Follow the current instructions for the device you play on rather than applying a Java installation guide to Bedrock.

Troubleshoot a mod that will not load
Check the causes below in order; begin with the edition because the Java and Bedrock customization routes are not interchangeable.

Edition: Confirm the content is intended for Java Edition if you are using a Java loader. Bedrock players need Add-Ons, not Java mod files.

Minecraft version: Compare the game version in the launched profile with the version supported by the mod. Fabric warns that a mod made for one Minecraft version may not work on a later version.

Loader and loader version: Confirm that the profile uses the loader named on the mod listing, and that the file is built for that loader.

Dependencies: Review the mod page for required libraries or other files. For Fabric mods, check whether Fabric API is listed or needed.

Profile and file location: Make sure you installed the mod into the profile you intend to play and launched that same profile.

If those checks do not resolve the problem, consult the mod author’s and loader’s current instructions. Minecraft Support does not troubleshoot issues arising from Java mod use because modding is not officially supported.
