For Lara Croft’s clearest origin-to-finale story, play Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, then Shadow of the Tomb Raider. That is the official Survivor Trilogy sequence. There is no established, exhaustive official chronology that puts every game in one continuous timeline, so the best way to approach the wider series is by its distinct eras.
Best order for the Survivor Trilogy
- Tomb Raider (2013)
- Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015)
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018)
Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics identify these three games as the Survivor Trilogy, and PlayStation describes Shadow as its conclusion. Play them in release order to follow this version of Lara’s origin arc. The official collection is Tomb Raider: Definitive Survivor Trilogy; check the platform and edition on the store where you plan to buy it. Official Tomb Raider games catalog.

Choose an order by Tomb Raider era
| Route | Play order | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Survivor era | Tomb Raider (2013) → Rise of the Tomb Raider → Shadow of the Tomb Raider | A modern origin story in three games |
| Classic era | Tomb Raider (1996) → Tomb Raider II → Tomb Raider III → The Last Revelation → Chronicles → The Angel of Darkness | The original run and its classic gameplay |
| Legend era | Anniversary → Legend → Underworld | A separate, connected story route that revisits the original adventure |
These are era-specific routes, not three segments of a single confirmed master timeline. The series has been rebooted and reworked, and Anniversary retells the original game rather than serving as a direct continuation of the 1996 release. Treat any order that jumps between these eras as a practical recommendation, not an official all-games chronology.
Classic-era order: the original games through The Angel of Darkness
- Tomb Raider (1996)
- Tomb Raider II
- Tomb Raider III
- The Last Revelation
- Chronicles
- The Angel of Darkness
This route follows the classic sequence. The official description for Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered says Chronicles follows the events of The Last Revelation. The collection contains those two games and The Angel of Darkness; the separate Tomb Raider I-III Remastered includes the first three games, their expansions, and secret levels. Check each store listing for the platform and edition available to you.

Legend-era order: Anniversary, Legend, Underworld
- Tomb Raider: Anniversary
- Tomb Raider: Legend
- Tomb Raider: Underworld
Anniversary reimagines the original Tomb Raider story. Legend and Underworld make up the rest of this era’s route, with Underworld rounding it off. It is a useful way to experience that connected set, but it should not be read as a bridge that merges every game continuity into one timeline.

For Tomb Raider: Catalyst, game director Will Kerslake said: “From a timeline perspective, Tomb Raider: Catalyst is set years after the events of Tomb Raider: Underworld, with the reboot trilogy serving as her origin story, so we’re seeing a more experienced Lara Croft.” This establishes a broad relationship between Underworld, the Survivor origin trilogy, and Catalyst; it does not specify an ordered place for every game between them or confirm a complete franchise chronology. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do spin-offs belong in the main play order?
Not necessarily. Games such as Lara Croft GO and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light are presented separately from the principal PC and console sequence. They are optional if your goal is to follow one of the main era routes above, rather than required chapters in the Survivor, classic, or Legend sequences.
