To play the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, two players use Monster, Spell, and Trap Cards to battle and try to reduce the opponent’s Life Points (LP) to zero. Each turn moves through six phases, from drawing a card to ending the turn. Konami’s official beginner page opens with the question, “So you want to get started and learn how to play the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME?”—this guide covers the essentials for answering yes.
What is the goal of a Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel?
A Duel is played by two players. The basic objective is to defeat opposing monsters and reduce your opponent’s LP to zero. Konami’s official rulebook and Beginner’s Guide page describes that central objective and provides the downloadable rules reference.
The rulebook also lists other outcomes:
- Your opponent cannot draw when required. If a player must draw a card but has no cards left in their Deck, that player loses.
- A card effect declares a win. Some effects can state a specific victory condition; follow the wording and applicable rules for that card.
- Both players reach zero LP at the same time. The rulebook describes this as a draw.
What happens during a turn?
Turns follow the same six phases in order: Draw, Standby, Main Phase 1, Battle, Main Phase 2, and End. The phases provide a framework for when you draw, take actions, battle, and finish your turn. They are not a complete guide to every card interaction or timing rule.
1. Draw Phase
The turn player draws one card. The player who goes first does not draw during the Draw Phase of their first turn. If you are required to draw and your Deck is empty, you lose the Duel.

2. Standby Phase
Resolve effects or costs that apply during the Standby Phase. Other legal effects may also be used here. Whether an effect applies depends on its card text and the rules governing it.
3. Main Phase 1
This is a main opportunity to play cards and prepare for battle. You can make plays allowed by the rules and your cards, including setting up your monsters, Spells, and Traps. Specific actions can have limits or requirements, so check the relevant card text when something is unclear.
4. Battle Phase
You may conduct battles in this phase. You do not have to attack: if you conduct no battles, you can skip the Battle Phase. When you do battle, follow the rules and the effects of the cards involved; this beginner overview does not cover every battle calculation or interaction.
5. Main Phase 2
If you conducted a Battle Phase, you can take further main-phase actions afterward, subject to the rules and to actions or limits that already applied that turn. Main Phase 2 is not a reset: an action already used or a restriction already met does not automatically become available again.

Which official resources should a beginner use?
Konami provides several official learning resources with different uses. The Rulebook & Beginner’s Guide page links a structured rules reference and an introductory guide; Konami’s official play page is a route to beginner learning materials and additional support resources.

- Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG: 2 Player Starter Set
- Rulebook: Use it to look up the basic rules and turn structure.
- Beginner’s Guide: Use it for an introductory explanation of basic mechanics and gameplay updates.
- Official play resources and Neuron: Use these official routes for current learning resources and card information; the play page also points to detailed rules and Forbidden & Limited List access.
There is an important coverage limitation: Konami’s rulebook page says the 2021 update does not cover Link Summoning, Link Monster Zones, or the updated location of Pendulum Zones. If you are learning those mechanics, pair the rulebook with Konami’s current beginner and play materials rather than treating the 2021 reference as a complete guide to modern play.
